A heart-wrenching and ultimately life-affirming story that demonstrates the power of love to see us through the darkest of times. When Holocaust survivor Lily Ebert was liberated in 1945, a Jewish-American soldier gave her a banknote on which he’d written ‘Good luck and happiness’. And when her great-grandson, Dov, decided to use social media to track down the family of the GI in 2020, 96-year-old Lily found herself making headlines around the world. Lily had promised herself that if she survived Auschwitz she would tell everyone the truth about the camp.

His office is a bulletproof van. He’s on the right side of the law, sort of… Sebastian Rudd is not your typical street lawyer. He works out of a customized bulletproof van, complete with Wi-Fi, a bar, a small fridge, fine leather chairs, a hidden gun compartment, and a heavily armed driver. He has no firm, no partners, no associates, and only one employee, his driver, who’s also his bodyguard, law clerk, confidant, and golf caddy. He lives alone in a small but extremely safe penthouse apartment, and his primary piece of furniture is a vintage pool table. He drinks small-batch bourbon and carries a gun. Sebastian defends people other lawyers won’t go near: a drug-addled, tattooed kid rumored to be in a satanic cult, who is accused of molesting and murdering two little girls; a vicious crime lord on death row; a homeowner arrested for shooting at a SWAT team that mistakenly invaded his house. Why these clients? Because he believes everyone is entitled to a fair trial, even if he, Sebastian, has to cheat to secure one. He hates injustice, doesn’t like insurance companies, banks, or big corporations; he distrusts all levels of government and laughs at the Justice system’s notions of ethical behavior. Sebastian Rudd is one of John Grisham’s most colorful, outrageous, and vividly drawn characters yet.

Communicators using a foreign language often unconsciously ‘transfer’ the forms and rules from their native language and culture into the target language. The generated message, although linguistically correct, might be interpreted wrongly by the receivers, based on their different cultural values and thus might lead to a cultural misunderstanding. Such cases raise the question of how to achieve a better competence in intercultural discourse. The presented communication situations were collected by the author of the article as a result of the implementation of an Erasmus + mobility project at the Hubei Technological University in Wuhan, China. The discussion on the cases follows the model of intercultural competence, described in a previous article "Integrated Process Model on Intercultural Competence" by the same author.

PAN 3 Mum & Dad Joanna Trollope Mum & Dad by the Sunday Times bestseller Joanna Trollope is a wise, brilliantly drawn examination of a modern family dilemma. It’s been twenty-five years since Gus and Monica left England to start a new life in Spain, building a vineyard and wine business from the ground up. However, when Gus suffers a stroke and their idyllic Mediterranean life is thrown into upheaval, it’s left to their three grown-up children in London to step in . Unlike its appearance and presentation, the format of The Record has not changed dramatically in that time. It is still important to have a publication literally of record, which documents what has been happening in the College during the past year, although now we include more news of old members, and of course we also have the brick, a parallel but very different publication. Perhaps this balance may change somewhat in the future, and we will certainly need a fuller and more formal annual report when, like all the colleges and the University itself, we come to register with the Charity Commission.
