Zero to 180 would like to kick off things early with a tribute to King session drummer Philip Paul (who you've heard on Freddy King's "Hideaway") that is PACKED with streaming audio links, images of 45s & LPs from around the world, auction prices, Billboard chart listings and tons of cool history culled from all the important music historians who have written about King Records: “Philip Paul: The Pulse of King” https://www.zeroto180.org/?p=32149 Aug. 22, 2018 King Records Month is just around the corner - get ready! Zero to 180 will be posting a new King history piece every 3 days during September as well as October. There will also be tweeting lots of cool King trivia on behalf of Xavier University's 'King Studios' historic preservation collaborative - a music history explosion that continues with this baseball-themed celebration of a novelty hit that dominated the year 1951: LINK to “Chew Tobacco Rag” Done R&B (by Lucky Millinder Orchestra) https://www.zeroto180.org/?p=27158 Aug. 24, 2018 King Records helped pioneer the practice of producing R&B versions of country hits and vice versa - "Chew Tobacco Rag" (1951) and "Why Don't You Haul Off and Love Me" (1949) being two examples of such 'crossover' marketing.

  • KRAUTROCK - LSD, APO, Ohm & Om - (SWR2 / 2010) (Von Lutz Neitzert)

KYGO X TINA TURNER “WHAT’S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT” OUT NOW Global superstar, producer and DJ, Kyrre Gørvell-Dahll – a.k.a Kygo, teams up with the incomparable, brilliant, and legendary Grammy Award winning superstar Tina Turner to unveil a remake of “What’s Love Got To Do With It” – Turner’s iconic #1 song that was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and is included in Rolling Stone Magazine’s list of “The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.” “What’s Love Got To Do With It” comes alongside a brand new video directed by Sarah Bahbah and stars Laura Harrier (Hollywood, Blackkklansman) and Charles Michael Davis (The Originals, The Vampire Diaries). Listen / Watch here HERE – out now via Sony Music International/Ultra Records/RCA Records. Says Kygo, “I couldn’t be more excited to collaborate with Tina Turner, who is an icon that I grew up listening to. ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It’ is one of my all-time favorite songs so to have a chance to rework it has been a very special moment in my career. I love working around timeless vocals and although it’s challenging to preserve elements of the original track and adding my own touch, I’m extremely happy with how it turned out!” It’s been a big summer for Kygo who back in May released his critically acclaimed third full-length album Golden Hour which features his hit single “Lose Somebody” with OneRepublic as well as “Higher Love” with Whitney Houston, the latter of which has more than 651 million audio and video streams combined and charted at Top 40 radio.

  • Directed by Morgan Neville Produced by Gil Friesen Produced by Caitrin
Directed by Morgan Neville Produced by Gil Friesen Produced by Caitrin Rogers WORLD PREMIERE U.S. DOCUMENTARY COMPETITION SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL 2013 Running Time: 90 minutes | Language: English SYNOPSIS Millions know their voices, but no one knows their names. In his compelling new film TWENTY FEET FROM STARDOM, award-winning director Morgan Neville shines a spotlight on the untold true story of the backup singers behind some of the greatest musical legends of the 21st century. Triumphant and heartbreaking in equal measure, the film is both a tribute to the unsung voices who brought shape and style to popular music and a reflection on the conflicts, sacrifices and rewards of a career spent harmonizing with others. These gifted artists span a range of styles, genres and eras of popular music, but each has a uniquely fascinating and personal story to share of life spent in the shadows of superstardom. Along with rare archival footage and a peerless soundtrack, TWENTY FEET FROM STARDOM boasts intimate interviews with Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Mick Jagger and Sting to name just a few. However, these world-famous figures take a backseat to the diverse array of backup singers whose lives and stories take center stage in the film. DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT About two years ago, I sat down with Gil Friesen, a longtime music industry veteran from A&M Records, whom I only knew by reputation. He told me he wanted to make a film about backup singers. He didn’t know what the film was going to be, but he knew there was something intriguing in there.

Prof. D. A. Brooks [email protected] Office: 405, Dept. of African American Stds, 81 Wall Street Spring 2015 Meets Tu/Th 2:30-3:45pm Location: WLH 208 Office Hours: Tu: 4-5pm, W: 3:30pm-5pm & by appointment AFAM 403/THST 431/AM STDS 386 “…Who Run the World”: Black Women and Popular Music Culture [Billie] Holiday demonstrates… the value of important lives and voices Otherwise dismissed. --Lindon Barrett, Blackness and Value My persuasion can build a nation. --Beyonce From Bessie Smith and Billie Holiday to Tina Turner and Beyonce, from Nina Simone and Grace Jones to Lauryn Hill and Nicki Minaj, black women have used various forms of musical expression as sites of social and ideological resistance and revision. Through an exploration of voice, lyricism, kinesthetic performance, instrumentality and visual aesthetics, this course examines the “world wide underground” of black women’s sonic cultures, and it re-interrogates pop music subculture theories through the intersecting prisms of race, gender, class and sexuality. It considers the ways that black women musicians operate as socio- political and cultural intellectuals, and it reads their work as historically-situated cultural texts that resonate in multiple contexts. Throughout the semester, we will explore the ways in which black women culture workers have stylized and innovated disruptive and iconic performance practices within the context of American popular music culture, from the postbellum era through the present day. Part of the aim of this course is to trace the tensions between the enormous influence and ubiquity of the black female singing voice in globalized popular cultures and the ways in which a range of entertainers have nonetheless negotiated eccentric and “obscure” musical gestures that signaled and affirmed the existence of resistant musical aesthetics in the face of panopticism.
