Two members of the Self Groups Mr Ifeanyi and Zitawere invited by Amaudo to speak to the residents who were discharged on 3rd December, 2016. They shared their experience on the road of recovery from mental illness and encourage the residents to take their medication as prescribed. It was very inspiring to listen to Ifeanyi and Zita share their experiences the residents who were preparing to be reunited with their families. The residents and their family members who were present at the event were encouraged by the testimonies of Ifeanyi and Zita. It was also good experience for Ifeanyi and Zita and Amaudo used the event to prepare them for advocacy and members of the Self Help Groups.

7. THE STORY OF THE YEAR

SHE WAS MENTALLY ILL AND WANDERED AWAY FROM HER HOME. HER MOTHER AND OTHER MEMBERS OF HER FAMILY WERE ANXIOUS TO FIND HER SO THEY CONSULTED THE PRAYER HOUSES. ONE PRAYER HOUSE TOLD THEM THAT SHE WAS DEAD. THE OTHER PRAYER HOUSE SAID SHE WAS MARRIED TO AN UNKNOWN MAN WHO HAS IMPREGNATED HER AND SHE WILL NEVER BE FOUND. BUT AMAUDO PICKED HER FORM THE STREET AND REHABILITED HER AND REUNITED HER WITH HER MOTHER AND FAMILY. THOSE MASSAGES FROM THE PRAYER HOUSES WERE FALSE

A young girl (name withheld) was picked by Amaudo on 14th February, 2016 along Uzuakoli road Umuahia where she was roaming the street. She was found to be mentally ill and she had speech impairment. But she was literate so she was able to write her name and home town as she became mentally stable at Amaudo. Amaudo took to her to Enugu her home town for home tracing. She was first taken to her secondary school in Enugu. The school mates who knew her were all surprised to see again because they were not expecting to see alive based on the false information from the prayer houses on her where about. The school teachers revealed that she was 16years old and in Senior Secondary School 3. She was about to write her final exam before she had mental health problem and she wandered away from the School. The school authority assisted Amaudo to trace her family. On seeing their daughter they family members were bewildered. They could not believe that she is alive. Her mother was short of words. She had given up hope on her daughter returning home because revelations from the prayer houses which she visited to know where she was. The 'pastors' of the prayer houses gave her revelations which indicated that it was of no value to look for her daughter. One of the pastors during a prayer informed the girls' mother that her daughter has died hence there was no need to look for her. Another pastor of another prayer house informed her that her daughter had married an unknown

PAGE 07 METHODIST CHURCH NIGERIA, AMAUDO ITUMBAUZO man and that she was pregnant hence looking for her would be useless.

On the day Amaudo brought the girl who had been rehabilitated back to her home to reunite with her mother was emotionally confused because of false information given to her about her daughter who wandered away. Mama could not believe that her daughter was alive and back to her house. She was very thankful to God for his mercy. All the revelations from the prayer houses were totally false. The young girl was not dead and she was neither married nor pregnant. Amaudo will continue to bring hope to the people who are mentally ill and homeless and their families.

8. PROJECTS COMPLETED IN 2016 In recognition of the human rights of the people with mental illness undergoing rehabilitation at AmaudoItumbauzo and the need to provide a habitable environment for rehabilitation, Amaudo embarked on projects to assure the Health Safety and Dignity of the residents and staff in the community.

TRAINING FOR STAFF ON 13.HUMAN RIGHTS

he Director of Amaudo Very Rev Kenneth Nwaubani has ensured that he transfers his knowledge in Mental Health Human Rights and Law to Amaudo staff so as to Timprove their knowledge on human rights of people with mental illness and reduce stigmatization against people with mental illness. Very Rev Kenneth conducted the following trainings for staff of Amaudo- Introduction to the Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities (CRPD), Key Rights of people with mental and psychosocial disabilities, Legal Capacity, Stigma and Discrimination, International and UN Human Rights Instruments.

The staffs are now aware of the Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities (CRPD) and other human rights issues. Poor attitude against people with mental illness which previously were not regarded by staff as human rights abuse has reduced.

METHODIST CHURCH NIGERIA, AMAUDO ITUMBAUZO P AGE 13 14. OUTSTANDING GOVERNMENT IMPACT IN 2016 n continuation of series of appeals by Amaudo to Abia State Government to rehabilitate the Bende -Amaudo Itumbauzo road which was abandoned for the past fifteen years, the Board paid a courtesy visit to the Wife of the Executive I th Governor of Abia State, Mrs Nkechi Ikpeazu on 20 November, 2016 and request her to urge the Governor to rehabilitate Bende- Amaudo Itumbauzo road and to attend the discharge service. It was amazing that the Governor directed that Okopedi - Amaudo road be graded. The road was graded in December, 2016.

It is easier now to come out from Amaudo to Okepdi junction. As we thank the Governor we still appeal for full reconstruction of Bende – Amaudo Itumbauzo road.

Figure 16. Repair of Okopedi - Amaudo road 15. CHALLENGES

HIGH INFLATION: In 2016 Amaudo like other individuals and corporate bodies in Nigeria witnessed an astronomical increase in prices of food stuff and other household items like rice, palm oil, garri, beans, kerosene, premium spirit, etc. The increase the prices of goods were over 100%. It was difficult because as a charity organization, Amaudo depends on donations to fund the project. Donations in cash and kind were drastically reduced because the inflation affected our local donors. We resorted to cutting down on expenditure and prioritizing our activities so as to continue to provide mental health care for people with mental illness in our society.

STIGMATIZATION: There is still strong stigmatization and human rights abuse of people with mental illness in our society. Some families do not give support to their relatives with mental illness. Some refuse to accept them after rehabilitation. Stigmatization is responsible for poor funding of mental health and lack of human right based mental health law by Government.

METHODIST CHURCH NIGERIA, AMAUDO ITUMBAUZO P AGE 14 16. R E C O M M e n d a t i o n s Having reviewed the activities of 2016 we wish to recommend thus: 1. That Methodist Church Nigeria and other Churches should support Amaudo in creating awareness on mental health and encourage people with mental illness to go to Mental Health Clinics and Hospitals for proper treatment and rehabilitation instead of attributing the causes of mental illness to demons and referring people with mental illness to prayer houses and witch doctors.

2. The Governments, State and Federal Legislatures and policy makers in Nigeria should make mental health laws and policies in line with international human rights instruments so as to improve mental health care for people with mental illness in Nigeria.

3. Government should train more psychiatric nurses to replace those who are retiring.

4. The Government of Abia State should reconstruct the Bende – Itumbauzo road to reduce the difficulties Amaudo is encountering in providing mental health care for the people.

5. Governments, Corporate bodies and individuals should support Amaudo through donations, funding of projects, payment for professional staff and fundingof training programmes for staff and psychiatric nurses to enable Amaudo continue to provide mental health care for people with mental illness.

17. TARGETS FOR 2017 e plan to do the following in 2017– Pick 56 residents off the street for rehabilitation, successfully rehabilitate, discharge and reunite 35 residents Wwith their families. in , provide mental health care to people with mental illness in communities through 54 community mental health clinics, provide Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) for 130 children with physical and learning disabilities, start the pilot Community Mental Health and Awareness Programme in Umuahia North Local Government Area, Reroof 6 residential houses focusing on the renovation for health, safety and dignity, Carry out training for staff and residents on Mental Health and Human Rights and other aspects of training that will improve the skills of staff in their service delivery to the service users.
