  • Godfatherism and Nigerian Politics: a Study of the Fourth Republic 1999-2018
Imtijotas.com.ng June 2018 Vol. 3 (1): 78-90 E-ISSN: 2616-096. Published on IMTIJOTAS: June 18, 2019 GODFATHERISM AND NIGERIAN POLITICS: A STUDY OF THE FOURTH REPUBLIC 1999-2018 Offor, Macaulay Arinze1 Email: [email protected] & Eze Christopher Obinna1 Email: [email protected] 1Department of Public Administration Institute of Management and Technology, IMT, Enugu Abstract The inherent danger or harm of political godfatherism in a fragile democracy like Nigeria cannot be over emphasized. Gadfatherism is an evil building block for corruption, bad governance, political instability, retrogression, under development, mediocrity and perpetual poverty of the people. The series of political imbroglio experienced in some states of the country has exposed the negative impacts of crude political godfatherism in Nigerian politics. This study therefore tries to unveil the problematic dimensions the phenomenon of godfatherism has assumed in Nigeria, especially during this fourth republic. The study exposes the instruments implored by the godfathers to achieve their objective, which include political violence, vote buying, diabolic oath-taking, unlawful impeachment, etc. The study also examines the relationship between the godfathers and the godsons before and after elections. The study adopted descriptive approach and therefore collected its data from secondary sources. The study reveals that the political relationship between the godfathers and godsons under successive government in Nigeria is a reflection of anti people’s political behaviour by voracious godfathers whose major pre-occupation is to perpetuate their hegemonic political influence and control personal interest and accumulation of abundant wealth. The study recommends attitudinal change, serious legislation against money politics, positive perception of politics, strict compliance to the electoral acts and guidelines, condemnation of evil and celebration of good; and patriotism as the solutions for positive change.

  • Impact of Chinese Investments on Trade Development: Nigeria in Perspective
International Journal of Business Systems and Economics ISSN: 2360-9923, Volume 12, Issue 2, (February, 2019) pages 94 - 102 www.arcnjournals.org International Journal of Business Systems and Economics Impact of Chinese Investments on Trade Development: Nigeria in Perspective Agadah Mienpre1 and B. Chima Onuoha2 1Doctoral Candidate, Department of Management, University of Port Harcourt | Email: [email protected] 2Professor of Management, Department of Management, University of Port Harcourt | Email: [email protected] Abstract: This paper inspects the Impact of Chinese Investment on Trade Development in Nigeria. The engagement among Nigeria and China depends more on economic ties, trade, investment and finance than on political affinity. There has been some evidence that Nigeria had made positive upgrades which have been profoundly appealing to overseas investors, especially the Chinese investors. For this to continue, it was recommended that Nigeria’s priority should be to build up the ability to better its own policies towards China’s engagement and also see China’s engagement gives it an opportunity to expand its trade. Keywords: Nigeria, China, Trade and Investment, Lagos, Kano INTRODUCTION Over the previous decades the volume of exchange between countries of the globe has considerably increased. Especially, Nigeria has seen a sharp ascent in trade and investment with other countries. The relations among Nigeria and the people’s republic of China, which cuts across trade, investment, political aid and military spheres have tremendously grown in recent years (Omoju and Adesanya, 2012). China’s first contact with Nigeria, unofficially, started in the 1950s, precisely 1957. Nigeria’s contact with China was through Egypt.

  • Disturbance Theory and Opposition Politics in Nigeria: an Appraisal of All Progressives Congress (Apc) Performance in the 2015 General Elections
88 South East Journal of Political Science Vol.3 No.1, 2017 DISTURBANCE THEORY AND OPPOSITION POLITICS IN NIGERIA: AN APPRAISAL OF ALL PROGRESSIVES CONGRESS (APC) PERFORMANCE IN THE 2015 GENERAL ELECTIONS Amobi P. Chiamogu and Uchechukwu P. Chiamogu Department of Public Administration Federal Polytechnic, Oko Abstract Elections have followed a particular trend in the political history of Nigeria with the ruling party (party-in-power) rarely ever losing elections. Character of Nigerian politics had inadvertently snowballed into one party system where there is either no opposition or it is fractionalized into insignificance. This paper studies in extenso the dynamics and issues giving rise to the prevalence of opposition in the 2015 general elections wherein for the first time in the annals of elections in Nigeria, an opposition party waxed very strong and garnered great force to unseating a 'ruling party'. After a detailed literature review, it is observed that imposition of candidates, internal wrangling, factionalization and lack of internal democracy laced with docile character cum personality of the defeated president form the fulcrum for the supremacy of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The paper further opines that overt inability of the outgoing president to assert himself firmly and demonstrate greatest personal drive to handling headlong national issues like insecurity, economic depression coupled with his lackluster disposition to galvanizing and welding federal cabinet into a usual 'cult' made his house to exist in disarray. The study adopted extensive use of secondary data which were analyzed content wise along postulations of disturbance theory as put forward by David Truman. It finally submits that lack of coordinated drive to handle issues knitted in the fact that Jonathan never planned to be a political leader created great opportunities for emergent crass of opposition politicians to thrive.

  • Understanding the Twists and Turns of Terrorism Among Muslims in the Nigerian Experience: an Assessment
Journal of Religion and Theology Volume 2, Issue 1, 2018, PP 1-15 Understanding the Twists and Turns of Terrorism among Muslims in the Nigerian Experience: An Assessment Ojo Joseph Rapheal Department of Religion and African Culture, Adekunle Ajasin University, P.M.B. 001, Akungba, Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria, West Africa *Corresponding Authors: Ojo Joseph Rapheal, Department of Religion and African Culture, Adekunle Ajasin University, P.M.B. 001, Akungba, Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria, West Africa ABSTRACT The history of humanity is replete with different acts of terrorism across ages and civilizations which takes different forms but fundamentally, they reflect man‟s inhumanity to man. Basically, different ideologies form the basis for such heinous acts. Nigeria, being a pluralistic society that is predominantly Muslims and Christians, has been faced with different forms of religious fundamentalism, extremism and terrorist attacks in the past four decades especially arising from some sects under the guise of promoting Islamic ideology for the establishment of „Islamic State‟ across the length and breadth of Nigeria. Engaging this issue through the historical, phenomenological and sociological research approaches, it was discovered that most of these acts of religious radicalism, extremism and terrorism are often hinged on religious and ideological manipulation, ignorance, poverty, absence of functional structure that promotes the operation of rule of law, thus increasing the frequency of violence and its effects. The work therefore recommended among other things the de-emphasizing of religious exclusivism, deconstruction of the age-long theologies of absolute truth claim, e.t.c. The conclusion of the work is that, dignity of humanity must take precedence over every religious contravening ideology that often leads to brutality and dehumanization of fellow human beings.
