Journal of Arts and Contemporary Society ISSN: 2277-0046 Volume 6, Number 2, 2014 Ordinary Readers' Hermeneutics of Matthew 21:33-46: An Interplay between Violence and Greed in Modern Nigeria John Arierhi Ottuh Lecturer at Nehemiah Bible College, Okwokoko and Vicar, Winners Baptist Church, Effurun, Delta State E-mail: [email protected], [email protected] Abstract Violence due to greed and ethno-religious dichotomy is dividing Nigeria more than ever before. Therefore, using the ordinary readers hermeneutics methodology to read Matthew 21:33-46, this paper showed that the periscope was a critique of violence and intrigue resulting from Greed, hatred, bitterness and selfishness, the aim of this paper was to examine the interplay between violence and greed in Nigeria. The paper also showed that a great relationship exists between ethnicity and violence in Nigeria. This paper argued that the Greed associated with selfish and cooperate individuals is dangerous to inter- human relationship in the society and as such it is capable of disintegrating the church and the Nigerian nation in general. The study was concluded on the presupposition that those who allow their ethno-religious divides and greed to drive them in perpetrating violence in the Nigerian society will provoke the wrath of God and human society. Key Words: Ordinary Readers, Hermeneutics, Violence Introduction The world is a puzzle but the puzzle of all puzzles is man. Nothing that shows this nature of man more than his behaviour, which is full of contradictions. He loves and as well hates, builds and as well destroys, gathers and as well scatters, purifies and as well corrupts, refines and as well defiles, praises and as well condemns, etc, in his bid to make one thing or the other out of his wealthy- wretched existence. -

Special RepoRt on nIgeria’s BENUe s t A t e BENUE STATE: FACTS AND FIGURES Origin: Benue State derives its name from the River Benue, the second largest river in Nigeria and the most prominent geographical feature in the state Date of creation: February 1976 Characteristics: Rich agricultural region; full of rivers, breadbasket of Nigeria. Present Governor: Chief George Akume Population: 5 million Area: 34,059 sq. kms Capital: Makurdi Number of local government: 23 Traditional councils: Tiv Traditional Council, headed by the Tor Tiv; and Idoma Traditional Council, headed by the Och’Idoma. Location: Lies in the middle of the country and shares boundaries with Cameroon and five states namely, Nasarawa to the north, Taraba to the east, Cross River and Enugu to the south, and Kogi to the west Climate: A typical tropical climate with two seasons – rainy season from April to October in the range of 150-180 mm, and the dry season from November to March. Gadfatherism is an evil building block for corruption, bad governance, political instability, retrogression, under development, mediocrity and perpetual poverty of the people. The series of political imbroglio experienced in some states of the country has exposed the negative impacts of crude political godfatherism in Nigerian politics. This study therefore tries to unveil the problematic dimensions the phenomenon of godfatherism has assumed in Nigeria, especially during this fourth republic. The study exposes the instruments implored by the godfathers to achieve their objective, which include political violence, vote buying, diabolic oath-taking, unlawful impeachment, etc. The study also examines the relationship between the godfathers and the godsons before and after elections. The study adopted descriptive approach and therefore collected its data from secondary sources. The study reveals that the political relationship between the godfathers and godsons under successive government in Nigeria is a reflection of anti people’s political behaviour by voracious godfathers whose major pre-occupation is to perpetuate their hegemonic political influence and control personal interest and accumulation of abundant wealth. The study recommends attitudinal change, serious legislation against money politics, positive perception of politics, strict compliance to the electoral acts and guidelines, condemnation of evil and celebration of good; and patriotism as the solutions for positive change. -

Like everyone who watched the BBC Channel 4 documentary on Saving Africa’s Witch Children when it was first broadcast on 12 November 2008, I was horrified at the sight of children being tortured, dehumanised and traumatised by their captors under the guise of exorcising witchcraft from their innocent souls. Some of them have already been killed. The gory scenes shown in the documentary were rightly met with universal condemnation; having pitched the conscience of the world. In reacting to this documentary, my Mission proceeded to send a quick rejoinder, stating, unequivocally, its abhorrence of what was depicted in the programme. Rather than denying that such cultural practices and human rights violations of children exist in one form or the other various parts of Nigeria, the Mission sought to put the documentary in the proper 2 context of ignorance, mass illiteracy, cultural practices, belief systems, poverty and lack of enforcement of existing laws. -

This includes whether claims are likely to justify the granting of asylum, humanitarian protection or discretionary leave and whether – in the event of a claim being refused – it is likely to be certifiable as ‘clearly unfounded’ under s94 of the Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002. Decision makers must consider claims on an individual basis, taking into account the case specific facts and all relevant evidence, including: the guidance contained with this document; the available COI; any applicable caselaw; and the Home Office casework guidance in relation to relevant policies. Security Threat Assessment for South West Executive Summary Political Context The merger between the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP) and other smaller parties, has provided an opportunity for opposition parties to align and challenge the dominance of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This however will also provide the backdrop for a keenly contested election in 2015. The zoning arrangement for the presidency is also a key issue that will define the face of the 2015 elections and possible security consequences. Across the six geopolitical zones, other factors will define the elections. These include the persisting state of insecurity from the insurgency and activities of militants and vigilante groups, the high stakes of election as a result of the availability of derivation revenues, the ethnic heterogeneity that makes elite consensus more difficult to attain, as well as the difficult environmental terrain that makes policing of elections a herculean task. Preparations for the Elections The political temperature across the country is heating up in preparation for the 2015 elections. While some state governors are up for re-election, most others are serving out their second terms. The implication is that most of the states are open for grab by either of the major parties and will therefore make the electoral contest fiercer in 2015 both within the political parties and in the general election. -

This study Texamined the extent to which the cankerworm has affected military operations which the current Head of State promised to execute within a very short time, so much that it is taking several years. Data was obtained from secondary materials which include – books, journals, periodicals, newspapers, the internet, etc. Data analysis was done by the technique of content analysis while the economic paradigm of corruption, Vannucci (2015), was adopted as the theoretical framework of the study. Findings revealed that the ght against Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria has lasted so long due to corruption that has eaten deep into the fabrics of the military hierarchy. It was therefore, suggested in the paper that the military hierarchy be sanitized by ushing out all culprits to ensure that every kobo released for the campaign is efciently utilized for the very purpose for which it is meant.
