We will begin with a survey of various creative principles, methods, tools and general philosophies of “making” as expressed by artists, teachers, critics and theorists from diverse backgrounds, with particular attention paid to the insights of independent and experimental filmmakers. The goal of this “study phase” is to open a window into the inner workings of the creative process, analyze films from the perspective of their own making, and ultimately enrich, stimulate and guide creativity throughout the entire filmmaking process from concept to screen.

  • Sight & Sound Films of 2007
Sight & Sound Films of 2007 Each year we ask a selection of our contributors - reviewers and critics from around the world - for their five films of the year. It's a very loosely policed subjective selection, based on films the writer has seen and enjoyed that year, and we don't deny them the choice of films that haven't yet reached the UK. And we don't give them much time to ponder, either - just about a week. So below you'll find the familiar and the obscure, the new and the old. From this we put together the top ten you see here. What distinguishes this particular list is that it's been drawn up from one of the best years for all-round quality I can remember. 2007 has seen some extraordinary films. So all of the films in the ten are must-sees and so are many more. Enjoy. - Nick James, Editor. 1 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (Cristian Mungiu) 2 Inland Empire (David Lynch) 3 Zodiac (David Fincher) = 4 I’m Not There (Todd Haynes) The Lives of Others (Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck) 6 Silent Light (Carlos Reygadas) = 7 The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (Andrew Dominik) Syndromes and a Century (Apichatpong Weerasethakul) No Country for Old Men (Ethan and Joel Coen) Eastern Promises (David Cronenberg) 1 Table of Contents – alphabetical by critic Gilbert Adair (Critic and author, UK)............................................................................................4 Kaleem Aftab (Critic, The Independent, UK)...............................................................................4 Geoff Andrew (Critic

This exhibition is part of the Filmmaker in Focus series at MoMA, which highlights the achievements of a director with an aesthetically and critically established career in filmmaking. The exhibition will be on view from September 10 through 18, 2009, in The Roy and Niuta Titus Theaters, and is organized by Jytte Jensen, Curator, Department of Film, The Museum of Modern Art. Andersson, who rarely travels, will introduce the first six screenings in the series, providing a unique opportunity to hear the director talk about his films outside of Sweden. Andersson’s earliest films, rarely shown school projects from the 1960s, are related thematically and stylistically to the films of the then-influential Czech New Wave. His first feature, which he presented as his thesis at the Swedish Film Institute, is A Swedish Love Story (1970). With the gorgeous Swedish summer as a backdrop, the film portrays the pure love that arises between the daughter of a refrigerator salesman and the son of a car mechanic, offering a glimpse into the lives and homes of the people of the Swedish Social Democracy during its heyday.

  • Listening to Technologically Mediated Music in Film Listening to Technologically Mediated Music in Film
Listening to technologically mediated music in film Listening to technologically mediated music in film Representations of social and solitary listening in Swedish cinema 1930–70 Tobias Pontara About one-third of the way into Astrid Henning-Jensen’s 1969 film Mej och dej /‘Me and you’, there is a scene where the film’s main character Jan Asker (played by Sven-Bertil Taube) is seen aimlessly wandering about his apartment while eating an apple.1 Asker is not in the best of moods, having just received a note from his fiancée Mai saying that she is leaving him. Eventually he ends up in the living room where a large radio is visibly placed in one of the corners. As if by a sudden whim, Asker goes straight to the radio, and when he turns it on an Intermezzo by Johannes Brahms is heard (Winquist, 1990, p. 43). Asker then turns away from the radio and walks across the room to an old rock- ing chair. He sits down in the chair and at the same time crumples up the piece of paper on which Mai’s farewell note was written. He lights a cigarette and then a candle light, after which he gets up again and walks to the bookshelf where he lingers for a while staring absentmindedly at the books. Meanwhile the music halts and we now instead hear a radio voice presenting a rather sophisticated, and to our modern ears perhaps a bit pretentious, analysis of the music just played: ‘Brahms provoked a violent opposition among conservatives already with his earlier compositions in which the regular rhythmic schemes of classicism were modified in a way that has been of crucial importance […]’ By the time this piece of information is given, Asker has moved to the adjacent bedroom where he sits down on his bed.

  • 1 Filming Guilt About the Past Through Anachronistic Aesthetics: a Pigeon
1 Filming Guilt about the Past through Anachronistic Aesthetics: A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence (Roy Andersson, 2014) In Roy Andersson’s En duva satt på en gren och funderade på tillvaron (A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence) (2014), happiness is often on people’s minds but rarely a part of their lives.1 This is foregrounded in the film through several scenes that play on the same tragicomic scenario: A character talks to someone on the phone and says, “Vad roligt att höra att ni har det bra” [“I’m happy to hear you're doing fine”], but every time, the character has to repeat the line – presumably because the person at the other end of the line has not heard what has just been said.2 Like many other moments in Pigeon, this scenario uses simple conversations in everyday life to touch on existential issues – in this case, the wish to be (or appear to be) happy. By repeating the line “I’m happy to hear you're doing fine”, the film hints at how attempts at being happy on other people’s behalf may fall on deaf ears, not so much because people ignore each other. Rather, the impression we get is that people try to care about others but ultimately, tend to care just a little more about themselves. Happiness and the lack thereof are one of several existentialist themes explored in Pigeon, a film that is explicitly framed as dealing with the experience of “being human”. After the opening credits, an inter-title reads “sista delen i en trilogi om att vara människa” [“the final part in a trilogy about being human”].
