Using epistemological mapping, the first part of the research begins by considering the effect postmodernism had on the self-understanding of both western society and the wider church. It then considers the impact of neo-economics on traditional political divisions and the shift towards empowering minority social groups. As these changes unfolded, the New Zealand church experienced a dramatic decline, creating significant challenges for its leadership. Through interviews and reflection on leadership writing over the last fifty years, the research maps the change in leadership epistemology such that it has altered ethics, values and theology to justify pragmatism as a primary mechanism for successful ministry. Notwithstanding a quiet call for proper reflection on the nature of leadership in uncertain times, the power of ever- changing secular business models still holds sway in 2020. In most cases, the church has become yet another identity political group concerned with its shrinking place in society. Consequently, part two of the

Copyright © 2019 Population Association of New Zealand Social Cohesion and Cohesive Ties: Responses to Diversity ROBIN PEACE PAUL SPOONLEY* Abstract Policy work that was undertaken on social cohesion in New Zealand around 2005 and resulted in a Cabinet paper has had limited uptake. The indicator framework for assessing immigrant and host outcomes that was developed in the context of government aspirations to build a more cohesive society was seen as too complex for government departments to operationalise, despite the relative success of similar theoretical developments in both Canada and the United Kingdom. The idea of cohesive societies has not gone away – if anything, recent high immigration levels have enhanced its relevance – and it is perhaps timely to reconsider the approach underpinning the framework that was developed and suggest an alternative that considers social and personal connectivity. One such approach, drawn obliquely from linguistics, is to consider the idea of ‘cohesive ties’ rather than the more abstract concept of cohesion per se and to seek indicators that point to the small mechanisms that contribute to unity, togetherness, continuity, coherence, connection, linkages and interrelatedness between people and groups that are critical to the different ways in which we come to ‘know’ the ‘other’. This has the potential to shift the conversation away from the relatively ubiquitous emphasis on cohesion as a property of ethnic differentiation – where ethnicity is seen as a potentially divisive aspect of social organisation that needs to be addressed by public policy – towards an understanding that differences between individuals and groups are multi-faceted, inevitable and enriching.

    “The Church of Critical Theory” a 5 star review by Dick Burkhart of Cynical Theories How Activist Scholarship Made Everything about Race, Gender, and Identity and Why This Harms Everybody By Helen Pluckrose and James Lindsay (2020) This outstanding book pulls back the covers from the toxic doctrines underlying Critical Race Theory (CRT) and related Critical Theories of gender and disability. Personally, I think Trump is off his rocker, but every now and then he hits paydirt, even if he’s so screwed up that he doesn’t know how to follow up. A prime example is when he recently characterized CRT, and the associated Robin DiAngelo-type diversity training, as “divisive anti-American propaganda”. Pluckrose and Lindsay explain how our core civic values are under assault from cult-like ideologies derived from nihilistic “postmodern” intellectuals from France, like Foucault and Derrida. Many find this very hard to believe, because it is so well disguised from the public, but its results are all too much in the news. These consequences include cancel culture, victimhood culture, and the Red/Blue state culture wars, with Trump ever eager to magnify and exploit the ensuing societal resentments and animosities and political gridlock. HISTORICAL OVERVIEW So how did this all come about?     6 Multiculturalism, Biculturalism, and National Identity in Aotearoa / New Zealand Katherine Smits In February 1840, New Zealand’s newly arrived first governor, William Hobson, concluded a ceremony at which a treaty was signed between the British Crown and some Maori chiefs at Waitangi on New Zealand’s North Island, with the words: “He iwi tahi tatou”—We are one people now. Hobson’s optimistic claim (armed conflict between Maori and the British broke out a few years later) is still cited today to invoke national unity in New Zealand. Ironically, it set the stage for a public debate about cultural difference and national identity that has dominated the country’s politics throughout its short post-settlement history. For most of that period, cultural difference was taken to refer to Maori and the British, or Pakeha, but over the past twenty-five years, the claims and discourse of diversity have broadened to encompass a wide range of polyethnic communities created as a result of liberalized immigration policies in the mid-1980s. Multiculturalism can of course refer to the demographic realities of diversity, or to a set of governmental programs designed to protect, preserve, and promote minority cultures, or to the normative arguments for recognition that underlie these. The demographic facts of cultural and ethnic pluralism in New Zealand, which encompasses both indigenous and polyethnic groups, have particular implications for normative arguments and policies. In this chapter I focus on both normative claims and state-sponsored and public discourses around cultural diversity. The terminology is particular in New Zealand: although the term “mul- ticulturalism” referred to settler-Maori relations when first introduced to public debate in the 1970s, it is now assumed to refer to polyethnic diversity resulting from non-British immigration.

    societies Article Examining the Idea of the ‘Vulnerable Student’ to Assess the Implications for Academic Freedom Stuart Waiton School of Business, Law and Social Science, Sociology Division, Abertay University, Dundee DD1 1HG, UK; [email protected] Abstract: This paper analyses the concept of vulnerability as it is applied to university students, and also staff, to assess the extent to which it has become a new norm that transforms the understanding of the individual—from being more robust, towards a more fragile sense of personhood. We examine the changing use of the term ‘vulnerable’ over time and with reference to the institutionalisation of the ‘vulnerable subject’. The paper relates this to the theoretical discussion about postmodernism and the ‘end of truth’ within academia, with the subsequent emergence of safe spaces as a mechanism for protecting the vulnerable student. Using snowball sampling, a pilot ethnographic study of academics who have experienced, or claim to have experienced, limits on their academic freedom is developed. One conclusion is that limits to academic freedom stem from within the academy itself. This conclusion is related to the growing understanding that student ‘wellbeing’ necessitates the regulation and ‘policing’ of knowledge and ideas that are deemed to be offensive to the vulnerable student. David Pearson Victoria University of Wellington Abstract Paul Spoonley’s wide-ranging survey of what he sees as new local population challenges is described and assessed. This is followed by an examination of Richard Alba’s critical analysis of how the misuse of demographic statistics influenced recent American political upheavals and distorts an understanding of ethno-relations in the United States. Whether his theory of new non-zero assimilation can be applied to New Zealand is then tentatively explored. Finally, some reflections on the relationship between demography and sociology and the enduring dangers of categoricalism are presented. I suspect many readers only glance at acknowledgements if, indeed, they read them at all. In this instance, they are noteworthy for what they reveal about these authors’ relationship to closely related but different disciplines. In his appreciation of those who assisted the writing endeavour, Paul Spoonley modestly confesses that he is ’not really a demographer but rather a sociologist who dabbles in demography’ (p. 274). So his book is not aimed at population specialists but all those within and beyond academia and government who share an interest in how a series of interrelated major demographic changes in New Zealand prompt searching questions about their future.

    Do We Need Kiwi Lessons in Biculturalism? Considering the Usefulness of Aotearoa/New Zealand’sPakehā ̄Identity in Re-Articulating Indigenous Settler Relations in Canada DAVID B. MACDONALD University of Guelph Narratives of “métissage” (Saul, 2008), “settler” (Regan, 2010; Barker and Lowman, 2014) “treaty people” (Epp, 2008; Erasmus, 2011) and now a focus on completing the “unfinished business of Confederation” (Roman, 2015) reinforce the view that the government is embarking on a new polit- ical project of Indigenous recognition, inclusion and partnership. Yet recon- ciliation is a contested concept, especially since we are only now dealing with the inter-generational and traumatic legacies of the Indian residential schools, missing and murdered Indigenous women and a long history of (at least) cultural genocide. Further, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, with its focus on Indigenous self-determi- nation, has yet to be implemented in Canadian law. Reviewed by Stephen Levine, Victoria University of Wellington New Zealand's tranquil reputation and geographical isolation have made it appear a somewhat unpromising subject for scholars interested in political extremism in its various forms. Even so, particularly in recent years commentators both from within the country and overseas have discovered a more complex and less attractive reality beneath the much more familiar bland and benign image. While not surprisingly much of the analysis has concentrated on relations between the indige­ nous Maori inhabitants and the non-Maori population, focusing on con­ temporary issues against a backdrop of accumulated grievances, other features of racism and prejudice have not gone unrecognized. A principal contributor to the study of New Zealand racism and polit­ ical extremism has been Dr. Paul Spoonley, a social scientist at one of the country's tertiary institutions, Massey University.l His investigations of the country's political psychopathology have gone some way towards stripping New Zealand of its smug claim (once widely heard) to have developed a society characterized by race relations uniquely harmoni­ ous in the contemporary world. His studies, beside those of others, have had the perhaps paradoxical effect of making this island state seem more "normal," vulnerable as are others to poisonous political perspec­ tives that those committed to more rational and humane outlooks have an obligation to expose. Georges Sorel. _______________________ This Thesis was conceived under singular circumstances. The author was in custody, convicted of offences arising from a 1989 shotgun attack upon the home of Eddie Funde, Representative to Australia of the African National Congress. On October 6 1994, I appeared for Sentence on another charge in the District Court at Parramatta. I had been convicted of participation in an unsuccessful attempt to damage a vehicle belonging to a neo-nazi informer. My Thesis -proposal was tendered as evidence of my prospects for rehabilitation and I was cross-examined about that document. The Judge (whose Sentence was inconsequential) said: … Mr Saleam said in evidence that his doctorate [sic] of philosophy will engage his attention for the foreseeable future; that he has no intention of using these exertions to incite violence.1 I pondered how it was possible to use a Thesis to incite violence. This exercise in courtroom dialectics suggested that my thoughts, a product of my experiences in right-wing politics, were considered acts of subversion. I concluded that the Extreme Right was ‘The Other Radicalism’, understood by State agents as odorous as yesteryear’s Communist Party. My interest in Extreme Right politics derived from a quarter-century involvement therein, at different levels of participation.
