I’m looking forward to taking the summer off and writing my book, Against Faith. Against Faith will, among other things, detail practical, conversational strategies you can use to help liberate people of the faith virus. I’ll examine actual recorded conversations in which the Socratic method was used as a cognitive intervention—removing the faith virus and replacing it with reason and rationality. To my knowledge, this is the first discussion of using the Socratic method to create, as opposed to rip down, beliefs. Next term I’ll be teaching the course I designed: Atheism. I’m looking forward to teaching this class, and especially to the guest lectures—I have a great lineup of Christian and Muslim apologists. sigmanutrition.com DANNY LENNON: James, welcome to the podcast. Thanks for taking the time to talk to me today. JAMES LINDSAY: Yeah, I'm happy to be here. DANNY LENNON: We've got quite a bit of ground to cover and I've got plenty of things that I'm curious to hear your thoughts on. But before we get into anything, I suppose to give people a bit of context for the rest of this conversation, can you maybe give a bit of your background, maybe starting from an academic sense? JAMES LINDSAY: All right. So, I'll give a little background kind of starting with the most recent and then skipping backwards and filling in the blanks. So, I'm probably best well known, and I think this is what I got invited on for, for my participation in what has come to be known as a Grievance Studies affair. Last October, myself and two collaborators came public with a project we spent about a year and a half or so on in which we decided to examine the academic publishing within a bunch of fields that we kind of lumped under one term that we call the Grievance Studies. So, this would be gender studies, race studies, queer studies, fat studies, and a bunch of other things that are all kind of under the cultural studies monikers. “The Church of Critical Theory” a 5 star review by Dick Burkhart of Cynical Theories How Activist Scholarship Made Everything about Race, Gender, and Identity and Why This Harms Everybody By Helen Pluckrose and James Lindsay (2020) This outstanding book pulls back the covers from the toxic doctrines underlying Critical Race Theory (CRT) and related Critical Theories of gender and disability. Personally, I think Trump is off his rocker, but every now and then he hits paydirt, even if he’s so screwed up that he doesn’t know how to follow up. A prime example is when he recently characterized CRT, and the associated Robin DiAngelo-type diversity training, as “divisive anti-American propaganda”. Pluckrose and Lindsay explain how our core civic values are under assault from cult-like ideologies derived from nihilistic “postmodern” intellectuals from France, like Foucault and Derrida. Many find this very hard to believe, because it is so well disguised from the public, but its results are all too much in the news. These consequences include cancel culture, victimhood culture, and the Red/Blue state culture wars, with Trump ever eager to magnify and exploit the ensuing societal resentments and animosities and political gridlock. HISTORICAL OVERVIEW So how did this all come about? Pluckrose and Lindsay have identified several phases since the WW II era. “Critical Theory was first laid out in detail in 1937 by Max Horkheimer [of the Frankfurt School of philosophy in Germany] who was concerned that traditional theories are only concerned with what is true, not what is right and wrong. -

societies Article Examining the Idea of the ‘Vulnerable Student’ to Assess the Implications for Academic Freedom Stuart Waiton School of Business, Law and Social Science, Sociology Division, Abertay University, Dundee DD1 1HG, UK; [email protected] Abstract: This paper analyses the concept of vulnerability as it is applied to university students, and also staff, to assess the extent to which it has become a new norm that transforms the understanding of the individual—from being more robust, towards a more fragile sense of personhood. We examine the changing use of the term ‘vulnerable’ over time and with reference to the institutionalisation of the ‘vulnerable subject’. The paper relates this to the theoretical discussion about postmodernism and the ‘end of truth’ within academia, with the subsequent emergence of safe spaces as a mechanism for protecting the vulnerable student. Using snowball sampling, a pilot ethnographic study of academics who have experienced, or claim to have experienced, limits on their academic freedom is developed. One conclusion is that limits to academic freedom stem from within the academy itself. This conclusion is related to the growing understanding that student ‘wellbeing’ necessitates the regulation and ‘policing’ of knowledge and ideas that are deemed to be offensive to the vulnerable student.
