Digital dialectics: the paradox of cinema in a studio without walls Scott McQuire There’s a scene in Forrest Gump (Robert Zemeckis, Paramount Pictures; USA, 1994) which encapsulates the novel potential of the digital threshold. The scene itself is nothing spectacular. It involves neither exploding spaceships, marauding dinosaurs, nor even the apocalyptic destruction of a postmodern cityscape. Rather, it depends entirely on what has been made invisible within the image. The scene, in which actor Gary Sinise is shown in hospital after having his legs blown off in battle, is noteworthy partly because of the way that director Robert Zemeckis handles it. Sinise has been clearly established as a full-bodied character in earlier scenes. When we first see him in hospital, he is seated on a bed with the stumps of his legs resting at its edge. The assumption made by most spectators, whether consciously or unconsciously, is that the shot is tricked up; that Sinise’s legs are hidden beneath the bed, concealed by a hole cut through the mattress. This would follow a long line of film practice in faking amputations, inaugurated by the famous stop-motion beheading in the Edison Company’s Death of Mary Queen of Scots (aka The Execution of Mary Stuart, Thomas A. -

Per l’occasione sono stati invitati Scott Ross e Shane Mahan, premi Oscar, che operano nel mondo degli effetti speciali per il cinema e per la televisione, al fine di illustrare il legame fra i mostri dell’antichità classica e della mitologia e la realtà della produzione cinematografica moderna, fortemente popolata da creature mostruose. Nella conferenza Monster Makers del 21 dicembre, presso l’Auditorium Parco della Musica, Ross e Mahan disegneranno il ponte ideale che collega gli albori del racconto per immagini e per miti della nostra civiltà, con il mondo straordinario della produzione digitale per il grande schermo. In ogni tempo i miti permangono come i terrori ad essi associati. Before that, I was an Associate Professor (with tenure) in Computer Science at the University of Southern California, as well as the director of the Vision & Graphics Lab at the USC Institute for Creative Technologies. I work at the intersection between Computer Graphics, Computer Vision, and AI, with focus on photorealistic human digitization using deep learning and data-driven techniques. I’m known for my work on dynamic geometry processing, virtual avatar creation, facial performance capture, AI-driven 3D shape digitization, and deep fakes. My research has led to the Animoji technology in Apple’s iPhone X, I worked on the digital reenactment of Paul Walker in the movie Furious 7, and my algorithms on deformable shape alignment have improved the radiation treatment for cancer patients all over the world. I have been keynote speaker at numerous major events, conferences, festivals, and universities, including the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos 2020 and Web Summit 2020. -

McCarthy ABSTRACT Runaway production is a phrase commonly used by Hollywood film and television production labor to describe the outsourcing of production work to foreign locations. It is an issue that has been credited with siphoning tens of millions of dollars and thousands of jobs from the U.S. economy. Despite broad interest in runaway production by journalists, politicians, academics, and media labor interests, and despite its potential impact on hundreds of thousands—and perhaps millions—of workers in the U.S., there has been very little critical analysis of its historical development and function as a political and economic discourse. Through extensive archival research, this dissertation critically examines the history of runaway production, from its introduction in postwar Hollywood to its present use in describing the development of highly competitive television and film production industries in Canada. From a political economic perspective, I argue that the history of runaway production demonstrates how Hollywood’s multinational media corporations have leveraged production work to cultivate goodwill and industry-friendly trade policies across global media markets. -

To reach those necessary goals, we strategically use an array of interconnected channels and platforms to transform not only the media landscape but also a cul- ture in which women’s and girls’ voices, stories, experiences, and images are nei- ther suffciently amplifed nor placed on par with the voices, stories, experiences, and images of men and boys. “Aliens” (1986) – Superior Sequel to the Original Source Retrospective by Dr. John L. Flynn Introduction At first glance, the notion of a sequel to “Alien” (1979) must have seemed like such a forgone conclusion. Next to “Star Wars” (1977) and “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” (1977), Ridley Scott’s stylish thriller had been one of the most popular films of the decade. But in the six years since its release, the motion picture had also spawned a rash of forgettable clones. And in a period filled with sequels to almost every successful and popular Hollywood movie that rarely succeeded on their own merit as original entertainment, the new production appeared to be more of a tremendous gamble than a sure thing. Besides the challenge to bring something familiar and new under budget and on time to the screen, the project also had to deal with its share of preconceptions. The most obvious problem writer and director James Cameron faced in developing a sequel to “Alien,” he said, was, “How do you beat a classic? You really have to dig deep into the bag of tricks and come up with some good ideas. And you have to do a proper homage to the original without being a mindless fan, something which is a piece of entertainment and a story in its own right.” Spawning the Sequel In the wake of “Alien’s” success, many similar films soon began appearing at the local multi-plex. Just as it had been influenced by low budget science fiction films of the Fifties and Sixties, like “It! The Terror from Beyond Space” (1958) and “Planet of the Vampires” (1965), the critically-acclaimed motion picture inspired its own collection of imitators, including “Inseminoid” (1980), ‘The Creature Wasn’t Nice” (1981), “Galaxina” (1981), “Galaxy of Terror” (1981) and many others. -

Through an analysis of the adaptation process of Marvel Entertainment’s superhero franchise from comics to film, I argue that a hegemonic American model of militarization has been used by Hollywood as a discursive formation with which to transform niche properties into mass market products. I consider the locations of narrative ambiguities in two key comics texts, The Ultimates (2002-2007) and The New Avengers (2005-2012), as well as in the film The Avengers (2012), and demonstrate the significant reorientation of the film franchise towards the American military’s “War on Terror”. While Marvel had attempted to produce film adaptations for decades, only under the new “militainment” discursive formation was it finally successful. -

Capturing and Simulating Physically Accurate Illumination in Computer Graphics PAUL DEBEVEC Institute for Creative Technologies University of Southern California Marina del Rey, California Anyone who has seen a recent summer blockbuster has witnessed the dramatic increases in computer-generated realism in recent years. Visual effects supervisors now report that bringing even the most challenging visions of film directors to the screen is no longer a question of whats possible; with todays techniques it is only a matter of time and cost. Driving this increase in realism have been computer graphics (CG) techniques for simulating how light travels within a scene and for simulating how light reflects off of and through surfaces. These techniquessome developed recently, and some originating in the 1980sare being applied to the visual effects process by computer graphics artists who have found ways to channel the power of these new tools. RADIOSITY AND GLOBAL ILLUMINATION One of the most important aspects of computer graphics is simulating the illumination within a scene. Computer-generated images are two-dimensional arrays of computed pixel values, with each pixel coordinate having three numbers indicating the amount of red, green, and blue light coming from the corresponding direction within the scene. Figuring out what these numbers should be for a scene is not trivial, since each pixels color is based both on how the object at that pixel reflects light and also the light that illuminates it.
