Justin McCarthy . A History of Our Own Times - Volumes I - V. London: Chatto and Windus, 1880-1899. various. An interesting set with the decorative bookplate of Ludwig Neumann of Grosvenor Square to the front endpapers. Justin McCarthy MP started with one volume and then expanded his history as the years passed into a 4 volume set. He later added volumes to keep up - so Vol V is an additional volume from 1897 (5th thousand printed). The 4 volume set is largely the New Edition from 1899. All the contents are in very good clean condition. The bindings are full tree calf with marbled page edges and endpapers. The spines are in crumbly condition and have been attached to the bindings. The style and condition of the bindings suggests volumes older than the publisher's date of 1880's onwards. Ludwig Neumann was a book collector with considerable income, so it could be that he had these history volumes bound in bindings from an earlier book - maybe to match others in his library. Good +.
