Wi th all of the success enjoyed by the Torero soc cer teams the last several years - eleve n NCAA Tournament appearances in thirteen seasons - it is easy to overlook the remarkable job Coach Seamus McFadden has done building the program from the ground up. McFadden has been named We st Coast Confer ence Coach of the Year a record seven times (2000, '99, '98, '95, '94, '92, '86); won fi ve WCC championships; has coached eight WCC D efensive Players of the Year, six WCC Offensive Pl ayers of the Year and two WCC Freshman Players of the SEAMUS Year. The 2006 squad was a mix of youth and experience fini shing 10-8-1 overall, XXXXX. McFADDEN In 2003 hi s squad went 12-4-4, placed second in 29th Season the highly competitive WCC, and reached the 2nd round of the NCAA Tourney. In 2002 he directed USD to a 14-6 mark McFadden At USD and fir st round appearance in the NC.Ar\ Tourney. In 2001 Year Overall wee NCAA 2006 10-8-1 5-6-1 the Toreros went 12-4-1 and four seasons ago he directed 2005 9-6-5 4-5-3 his Toreros to a 16-2-2 record, another WCC title and its 2004 7-10-3 4-6-2 eighth trip to the NCAAs since 1990. The Toreros reached 2003 12-4-4 4-2-0 2nd Rd a national ranking as high as 3rd before finishing the season 2002 14-6-0 3-3-0 1st Rd 2001 12-4-1 3-2-1 2nd Rd tenth overall (p rogram-best). 2000 16-2-2 5-0-1 * 2nd Rd McFadden arrived at US D in 1979 and fi eld ed 1999 14-4-0 4-2-0* 1st Rd USD 's first team in the fall of 1980. The 1990 1990 16-3-5 2-2-1 2nd Rd squad, led by the first of McFadden's four All-Americans, dropped just three games the entire season and 1989 14-6-1 2-3-0 advanced to the NCAA Second Round. Those who know McFadden closely could see the writing on the wall 1988 10-8-2 1-3-1 many years earlier, when the Irishman led Mesa JC to a 30-4 record over two seasons while at the same time 1987 12-7-2 1986 19-4-1 guiding Clairemont High to consecutive CIF-San Diego Section titles and the La Jolla Cup. 1985 7-1 1-2 The whole puzzle came together in 1992 when McFadden had in place several of San Diego's best 1984 4-12-4 local talent. Student-athletes, who in the past had looked outside the city to showcase their talents, were sud 1983 1-14-0 denly arriving at Alcala Park. The 1992 Toreros showed remarkable poise under their leader, compiling a 19-5 1982 3-15-1 1981 5-12-1 record and advancing to the NCAA Championship Game. 1980 0-12-0 The 54-year-old McFadden seems to save hi s best coaching for the big games. McFadden played collegiately at San Diego State, where he received a B.A. degree in His tory in 1976. That same summer he was with the San Diego Jaws of the North American Soccer League. Keeping true to his native roots, McFadden took the 1997 squad on a trip to his homeland Ireland during the summer for exhibition games against Ireland and Britain's elite. Founded in 1949, USO is located on 180 acres overlooking Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. The campus is named Alcala Park and is located just 10 minutes from downtown San Diego and the world famous San Diego Zoo. Historic Old Town is just minutes away as well. The city of San Diego along with this campus traces their origins to fifteenth century Spain. The campus was named after a Spanish village near Madrid - Alcala de Henares. Founded by the Greeks as Complutum, the village was later renamed Al Kala (the Castle) by the Moslems. Christians recaptured the village centuries later and founded a university, the University of Alcala, whose buildings became the inspiration for USD1s style.

The Campus The USO campus is regarded as one of the most architecturally unique institu tions in the country, featuring major buildings designed in an ornamental 16th century Spanish Renaissance style. Since 1984, USO has completed numerous major construction and expansion projects. In 2000, the Jenny Craig Pavilion, a 5, 100-seat athletic center, opened its doors as home to USO volleyball and bas ketball. In the fall of 2001 , the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice opened on the west end of campus and a new Science and Technology Center recently opened for the 2003-04 academic year. A five-story Spanish Renaissance parking garage (1,100 spaces) was completed in 1998. A landscaped fountain plaza was finished in the fall of 1995, connecting the entrances of the lmmaculata and Hughes Administration Center. In 1992, the university completed the 45,000 square-foot Loma Hall, which in cludes an expanded bookstore, a larger mail center, classrooms, and laboratories. The Bert Degheri Alumni Center is a three-story, 28,000 gross square foot structure that provides on campus facilities for alumni programs, information and socia l functions. It houses the departments of University Relations and Development.

Academics USO enrolls more than 7,600 students who have a choice of more than 60 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The university1s aca demic units include the Col lege of Arts and Sciences, and the Schools of Business Administration, Education, Law, and Nursing. Class size generally averages between 15-25 students with the student to teacher ratio being 14:1. Over 97 percent of USD1s full-time faculty hold doctorates.

In the annual ratings of the country\ colleges and universities, pub lished by U.S. News & World Report, USO moved from the regional to national category in 1994. The university now consistently ranks among the top schools in the United States.

Athletics The University of San Diego is a member of the West Coast Confer en ce for nearly all sports and competes in 16 intercollegiate sports on the NCAA Division I level. The football team just completed its 14th season in the Pioneer Football League. Women1s sports include: , cross country, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis an d voll eyball. Men 1s sports include: baseball, bas ketball, cross country, golf, football, rowing, soccer and tennis. Since 1990, USO teams have made 52 NCAA post-season appearances; garnered 66 All-American se lections; had 37 Conference Coaches of the Year; won 18 conference cham pionships; and 4 WCC Scholar Athletes of the Year.

The University of San Diego is very proud of the student-athletes that represent our institution on 7 6men 's and women's NCAA Division-/ athletic teams. These are proud and serious competitors, honored to represent the University. Last year forty percent of our student-athletes carried a grade-point average above 3.2, and nine of our teams had a cumulative grade-point average above 3.0. Athletics is vital to the University o f San Diego, a way students, faculty, staff and alumni come together as one community. I am both a university presiden t and a Torero fan; I look forward to sharing the excitement of Torero athletics with our many fans. Dr. Mary E. Lyons

Torero Strength and Conditioning

The University of San Diego athletic department recognizes the need for all athletes of all sports to engage in a comprehensive strength and co nditioning program. Th e USO strength and co nditioning program has been designed to develop functional strength, speed, power and endurance. Th e development of these phys ica l attributes is ineffective if the athletes are not ab le to carry them over to the playin g fi eld. Adh erin g to a properly des igned program of st re ngth training, conditioni ng and nutrition ca n enab le our men and women to become the best possible athletes they can be, while simultaneously red ucing the in cidence of injury. The hea rt of the strength and conditioning program is the Jenny Cra ig Pavilion fitness center (3,800 square feet) and the USO Sports Center weight room (5,000 square feet). Both weight rooms contain Olympic platform s, free-weights, selectorized machines, dumbbell s and card iovascular eq ui pment, and are open exclusively to student-athletes at specific times each day. USO student-athletes rece ive intensive instruction on proper weight training technique; speed, power and agility development; and sport-specifi c conditioni ng. Their strength and conditioning programs are specific to the nature of their sport or position. Each athlete is individuall y monitored throughout their program to ensure the greatest chance of athl etic progress.
