Looking On - Wenhaston Primary School Exhibit At Halesworth Library In conjunction with Suffolk Enterprise Learning Partnership, local artist Vanessa Briggs spent a day with Year 3 and 4 students from Wenhaston Primary School making life-sized sculptures, based on spectators for the up and coming Olympic games. A selection of the sculptures produced will be exhibited at the ‘View Tube’, an exhibition space which overlooks the Olympic park and the student/artists will be invited to see their work in situ, as well as having a tour round the Olympic site. In an interim exhibition, Halesworth Library has kindly offered to host an exhibition of the unique sculptures, who sit amidst the book shelves. Mrs Brinkley Headteacher at Wenhaston Primary School remarked “It is a wonderful opportunity for our students to work with professional people and to have their work exhibited in the hub of the community”. The humorous and interesting models can be seen at the library throughout January and February. Wenhaston is one of over a dozen schools that are taking part in this project, funded through the ELP, and being co-ordinated by The Life-sized spectator sculptures Denes High School in Lowestoft, lead co-ordinating school for the Photo © Sally Erb, Assistant Head Suffolk ELP. Mrs Grace Hurley Several friends joined the family at the funeral Service in St Peter’s Church, Wenhaston on 3 December for Mrs Grace Hurley who died on 24 November in Norwood House, Middleton, aged 91. The Service was conducted by Father Edward Rennard and the hymns ‘Morning Has Broken’ and ‘Lord Of All Hopefulness’ were sung with Mr John Stevenson on the organ. Mrs Hurley was born in Wash Lane Wenhaston in 1918, one of the four children of Mr and Mrs A Roberts and she lived in the village for 82 years before going into care. She was keen on sports and athletics for which she had won County honours. She married Mr Jack Fairs of Walberswick in the early 1940s, who was in the army, but she was widowed soon afterwards when he lost his life during the fighting in Italy. In her early days she delivered bread from a van for Mr Youngs who had a bakery business in Wenhaston. During the war she was engaged on work relating to airfield construction. In 1948 she married Mr Dennis Hurley from Ireland who in 1973 with myself were the first to build new dwellings in Back Road since World War II. Together Mr and Mrs Hurley supported village activities and Dennis was a prominent member of the football and bowls clubs. Her stay in Norword House was preceded by a spell in Southwold Hospital and when she died she was the longest staying resident enjoying excellent care there, and being surrounded by her friendly nurses at the time of her demise. There were flowers, and burial took place in Wenhaston cemetery. Donations are invited for the provision of a bench seat at Norwood House in memory of Grace and may be sent c/o Tony Brown’s Charity Account for a memorial at Norwood House, Funeral Directors, Chantry Road, Saxmundham. Everything You Wanted To Know About Funerals Rosedale Funeral Home is launching a series of free funeral planning sessions in the New Year, which it hopes will help people to make good decisions following the loss of a loved one. Most people are in shock when they have to arrange a funeral. Suddenly they have to make all sorts of decisions about the funeral arrangements and while we want to make sure they understand all the options available, it can simply be too much to take in. What we hope these planning afternoons will do is enable people to find out more, so that when the time comes they’re up to speed with the choices they need to make. The New Year is also a time when people are making resolutions and often like to get their affairs up to date and these sessions may appeal to those wanting to plan their own funerals. There’s nothing morbid about leaving instructions about your wishes - in fact it can save a huge amount of heartache for those left behind if they are able to give you the send off you wanted. As well as information on the vast array of funeral options available nowadays, there will also be an opportunity to ask advice on issues surrounding wills and probate. Those attending will also receive a take-home pack of information, along with a copy of the book ‘When we Remember - Inspiration and Integrity for a Meaningful Funeral’, together with its accompanying CD of funeral music. The first funeral planning afternoons will take place in January according to demand, with further sessions being planned later in the spring. Places are limited to four per session. Further information is available from any Rosedale Funeral Home or email us on [email protected] . 2 Wenhaston Word January 2011 Deadline Date: 20th January for February 2011 issue News From Wenhaston Youth Club We are pleased to announce that Wenhaston Wenhaston Allotment & Leisure Youth Club will start again on Friday 14th Gardeners Association January 2011 from 6:30pm - 8:00pm and Notice Of Annual General Meeting from then on every fortnight (when possible).
