Friends Service Council Nepal (FSCN) has been supporting the earthquake affected communities of Lalitpur and Bhaktapur, immediately after the earthquake till date. In this span of one year, more than one hundred thousand people have been benefited through this project covering sectors like Relief support, WASH, Shelter support, Psychosocial support, Livelihood promotion and Disaster risk management.

Immediately after the earthquake of 25 April 2015, FSCN in partnership with DCA started relief distribution in various areas of Lalitpur and Bhaktapur districts. With an aim to support people with integrated response and recovery programs, FSCN and DCA, along with other partners in Nepal, launched the Earthquake Emergency Project.

First of all, I would like to thank our implementing partner FSCN for successful completion of this ambitious project. I am very impressed by the working modalities of FSCN because it enabled them to build a strong coordination with national and local government, various stakeholders, DMCs, DDRCs and other concerned line agencies for the effective implementation of this project in this short timeframe. Local youth mobilization was also an innovative approach adopted by FSCN for smooth running of the project.

I am glad that FSCN was able to maintain good governance and transparency which are core principles of DCA, by means of proper documentation, publications, visibility and media coverage. I appreciate that FSCN is going to publish a summary report of this Earthquake Emergency Project in order to provide information to various stakeholders and to the general public about the project.

It is our great pleasure that we have successfully accomplished our 1st Act Appeal Project i.e. “Earthquake Emergency Project (EEP)” at Lalitpur and Bhaktapur districts in partnership with FSCN who have always proved themselves as a militant team.

I feel that DCA hasfound a fantastic partner to implement Earthquake Emergency Project at Lalitpur and Bhaktapur right from the 3rd day of April 25 earthquake. As a DCA Coordinator, for me,it was a great learning opportunity and indeed a very good experience to work in partnership with FSCN during this EEP. We have achieved amazing results from our programme together and I have been very much impressed by the commitment, dedication and ability of FSCN team.

First of all, I would like to congratulate FSCN team for effective implementation and successful completion of this project. I would like to thank all the brilliant staffs and volunteers of FSCN who worked day and night for achieving optimum results and for providing maximum benefit for the earthquake affected communities. I would like to express my sincere gratitude towards my DCA colleagues’, the matic coordinators/officers, team leader/supervises, other senior advisers and all the supporters who have supported for the success of this project through their valuable contribution in their respective areas.

I would also like to acknowledge FSCN for being able to develop a strong coordination and network with the government, local bodies, stakeholders, concerned line agencies and local political parties for the smooth operation of the project. Various strategies and modalities like local youth mobilization, formation of local friends help committee, collaboration with local government and non-government bodies which were adopted by FSCN for the project implementation considering the humanitarian strategy of DCA.

BACKGROUND

Friends Service Council Nepal (FSCN) Friends Service Council Nepal (FSCN) is a non-profit making national level non-government organization working for socio-economic development, disaster risk management, WASH, livelihood support, good governance and human rights in Nepal since 1991. FSCN aims to fight against poverty and injustice through empowerment of the poor and marginalized people. The main areas of intervention of FSCN are Water, health and sanitation (WASH), human rights, women, child and youth empowerment, gender equality and social inclusion (GESI), climate change and disaster risk management. FSCN is affiliated with Social Welfare Council of Nepal besides being a member of various networks like NGO Federations of Nepal, National Disaster Management Network of Nepal (DiMaNN) as founder member, Disaster Preparedness Net-work Nepal and so on. It is also affiliated with WASH Alliance Nepal, and WASH RCNN (Resource Centre Network Nepal) as a member.

FSCN has been actively working for different types DCA (DanChurch Aid) of disaster risk reduction and mitigation activities. DCA is faith-based, non-missionary organization. After the devastating earthquake in Nepal, FSCN has been implementing EEP in partnership with Act Alliance, DCA and NCA in Bhaktapur and Lalitpur districts. The program has been launched into 3 phases: Relief support, Emergency response and Recovery.

With the prime objective of facilitating safe and hygienic household latrines for the earthquake affected families, FSCN has supported 1040 households of Bhaktapur and Lalitpur districts for the construction of household latrines.

Priority was given to people from fully/ partially damaged houses, single women, elderly, people with disabilities and the households with newly born child or pregnant women.

Putali Tamang, resident of Lakuribhanjyang, Lalitpur, lives Sirimaya Tamang is a permanent resident of Lakuribhanjyang, with her nine year old dauaghter, a seven months old son Mahalaxmi Municipality-1. Before the earthquake, her and her mother-in-law. Her husband is recently in a gulf husband used to work as a labor on daily wages and make country for employment.
