Porterhouse Records is elated to announce partnering with Juno winner and Canadian Indie laureate Art Bergmann to release his latest full-length recording entitled “Late Stage Empire Dementia.” The L.P. is tentatively scheduled for a mid-2020 release. With the core of the album now written, Art has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help finance recording and production. Fans can use this link to make a donation and in return, will receive a digital copy of the record including artwork. https://www.gofundme.com/f/art-bergmann-late-stage-empire-dementia Porterhouse will be re-releasing select pieces of Art's body of work, both from his formative bands Young Canadians and Shmorgs to his award winning work as a solo artist. There'll even be a few rarities from in-between projects he has participated in over the years. The first gem to see the light of day will be “Hawaii” the seminal recording from Young Canadians. Originally released in 1979 the Bob Rock produced E.P. is one of the first West coast punk rock records ever created. Out of print for decades, the E.P. will be re-issued on limited edition custom clear orange vinyl. The package will include the original lyric sleeve and an outake from the original jacket artwork in the form of an easter egg insert of the infamous Bev Davies beach photo featuring Art, naked on a rocky beach at Kitsilano, Vancouver. Porterhouse Records will be announcing the Track Listing and revealing Album Cover Art for “Late Stage Empire Dementia” as well as forthcoming release dates for Singles the L.P., Videos and the “Hawaii” E.P. in subsequent press releases. Doucet Abstract: One aspect of urban culture is examined to evaluate Toronto's position within the urban hierarchy, namely, the production of songs and sounds about the city. Although much music has been performed and created in Toronto over the years, and many songs have been urritten about a variety of features of life in the city, the musical images of Toronto remain largely unknown beyond its borders—even to many of the city's own residents. If Toronto is a "world-class city," the evidence for such a claim would have to be found on other dimensions than the one explored here. No one ever wrote / A single note / About Toronto. — Johnny Wayne and Frank Shuster (19%) I find that lately, I'm missing old Toronto, Where bass is strong and drums are full of fire. — from the Lenny Breau song "New York City" (1987) No nation can exist by the balance sheet alone. Bloodied but Unbowed traces Vancouver's punk history 7/12/10 3:15 PM Bloodied but Unbowed traces Vancouver's punk history By Mike Usinger Publish Date: May 6, 2010 Entirely appropriately, if you think about it, more than one pioneer responded in a way that was totally punk rock when asked to be a part of the documentary Bloodied but Unbowed. “I got told to fuck off a lot,” director Susanne Tabata says bluntly, interviewed at the Georgia Straight offices. “But I expected that—I really did. In other words, it was like, ‘I’m not interested.’ People have moved on with their lives, and to ask them to recapture, relive, rethink moments of their youth can be an emotional experience. And it was an emotional experience for people.” The “it” that the independent filmmaker is referring to is the late-’70s birth of the Vancouver punk-rock scene. At a time when the world was fixated on feathered hair, flared jeans, and coke-dusted discotheques, the West Coast spawned a musical movement every bit as important as high-profile ones in Los Angeles, New York City, and, arguably, London, England. Vancouver bands like D.O.A., Pointed Sticks, Young Canadians, Modernettes, Braineaters, Dishrags, and Subhumans seemingly exploded out of nowhere, overnight. And, just as quickly, an alienated generation embraced them. Bloodied but Unbowed takes a loving—and long overdue—look at one of the most fertile scenes in North American music history, with Tabata mixing rare archival footage with modern-day interviews with those who were on the frontlines.
