Low Dose Nerve Agent Sarin Causes Dilated Cardio myopathy and Autonomic Imbalance Sarin, a lethal chemical nerve agent, may be a causative fa ctor in multifactorial syndrome implicated in the Gulf War and Tokyo terrorist attacks. While high dose results in seizure and death, low dose exposure may lead to autonomic imbalance and chronic cardiac pathologies. In the present study, echocardiography and electrocardiography were used to examine the late onset effects of a low dose sarin on cardiac structure and function in mice. Stress responsiveness of the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis was also tested. Findings demonstrate changes consistent with a dilated cardiomyopathy, including left ventricular dilatation, reduced contractility, and altered electrophysiological and inotropic responses to β adrenergic stimulation. Results also indicate altered stress responsiveness of HPA indicating autonomic imbalance . The role of low-dose sarin/organophosphate exposure needs to be considered in military and civilian population who suffer from autonomic imbalance and/or cardiomyopathies of indeterminate origin. iii Table of Contents I. Epidemiological data suggest a possible link between chemical exposures and Parkinson’s disease (PD); however, there have been no reliable data on the incidence or prevalence of PD among GW veterans to date. This study included the following 2 questions: 1. Do deployed GW veterans display PD-like symp- toms? and 2. Is there a relationship between the occurrence and quantity of PD-like symptoms, and the levels of deployment-related exposures in GW veterans? Material and Methods: Self-reports of symptoms and exposures to deployment-related chemicals were filled out by 293 GW veterans, 202 of whom had undergone 3 Tesla volumetric measurements of basal ganglia volumes. Correlation analyses were used to examine the relationship between the frequency of the veterans’ self-reported exposures to deployment-related chemicals, motor and non-motor symptoms of PD, and the total basal ganglia volumes. Results: Healthy deployed GW veterans self-reported few PD-like non-motor symptoms and no motor symptoms.

    REVIEW OF MODELLING OF THE DEMOLITIONS AT KHAMISIYAH IN MARCH 1991 AND IMPLICATIONS FOR UK PERSONNEL EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 1. The purpose of this paper is to provide the MOD’s assessment of the 2002 US Department of Defense (DoD) modelling of the events at Khamisiyah. It discusses changes to the modelling of the plume, since the initial US model in 1997, and the possible level of exposure, before examining the potential implications for the health effects of UK veterans. While the DoD 2002 paper contains no new evidence specific to UK troops, it does provide a greater understanding of the events at Khamisiyah. 2. On 10 March 1991, US Forces demolished an ammunition storage facility at Khamisiyah in Iraq. Not until 1996 did it became apparent to the US authorities that weapons containing nerve agents had been destroyed in the demolitions, potentially releasing sarin and cyclosarin into the atmosphere. The DoD developed mathematical computer models in order to estimate the exposure area resulting from the possible release of chemical warfare agents. The results of these models, including an estimate of the numbers of US personnel potentially exposed as a consequence of the demolitions, were published in 1997. In December 1999, the MOD published its assessment of the potential effects on UK personnel in a paper entitled “Review of Events Concerning 32 Field Hospital and the Release of Nerve Agent Arising from the US Demolition of Iraqi Munitions at the Khamisiyah Depot in March 1991” which discussed the US Department of Defense’s theoretical computer model of the events at Khamisiyah.

This modeling exercise has been a joint effort, with significant coordination among multiple agencies and hundreds of people, with expertise ranging from upper atmospheric conditions to soil characteristics. Since 21 July 1997 we have provided many briefings to Secretary Cohen and the Joint Chiefs, DCI Tenet, Senator Rudman, the staff of the National Security Council, the Presidential Advisory Committee, Congressional staffers, representatives from veterans' organizations, and the media. This report is our effort to make this information as widely available as possible.
