  • Spirits of the Air. Kurt Diemberger. Translated from the German
Spirits o f the Air. Kurt Diemberger. Translated from the German by Audrey Salkeld. The Mountaineers, Seattle, 1994. 304 pages, numerous photo graphs, maps and other drawings. Appendices: a metric conversion table, chronology of the author’s important climbs and expeditions, brief note on mountaineering terminology, and selected bibliography. $27.95. Kurt Diemberger’s mountaineering and expedition filming accomplishments, spanning nearly 50 years, are a marvel to behold. His autobiographical Summits and Secrets, published in 1971 when Kurt was 39, established him as a mountaineering writer of considerable talent. By this time he had already participated in first ascents of two major peaks Broad Peak (8047 meters) and Dhaulagiri (8167 meters). The 1957 ascent of Broad Peak was accomplished in alpine-style, without either oxygen or high-altitude porters, quite an achievement for this 4-man team consisting of Diemberger, Hermann Buhl, Fritz Wintersteller and Markus Schmuck. Later, in 1978, he added Makalu (8463 meters) and Everest (8848 meters) to his 8000-meter peak list; and Gasherbrum II (8035 meters) a year later. It was on this French-led Everest expedition that Kurt made film history by producing a sync-sound film on the summit. Diemberger became the cameraman of choice for many international expeditions and between 1982-86 journeyed several times to K2 with the Englishwoman Julie Tullis; together they established themselves as the only 8000-meter film team, Kurt with the camera, Julie in charge of sound. They climbed K2 in the summer of 1986, but as they retreated to high camp on the Abruzzi Spur they and five other mountaineers were imprisoned by a catastrophic week-long blizzard.

  • Dying on the 8000M Peaks in the Himalaya and Karakoram
LEARNING BY (NOT) DYING ON THE 8,000M PEAKS IN THE HIMALAYA AND KARAKORAM Learning by doing is regarded as a fundamental driver of economic growth in the endogenous growth literature. Yet studies of learning by doing have examined industries for very brief periods only, and they generally use aggregate data to infer learning that may be occurring at a micro level. This study examines the history of an “industry”—Himalayan mountaineering on the peaks over 8,000m in height— over an entire century. As we are able to identify individuals taking part in climbing expeditions, we can test whether learning by doing takes place at the individual, “firm”, or industry level. We find evidence that observed increases in successful ascent rates and concomitant decreases in death, frostbite and altitude sickness rates are in part due to learning by doing at the industry level, as an increase in the cumulative experience of prior expeditions reduces the chances that a later expedition will suffer an adverse outcome, and in part due to increases in the human capital of the climbers, as an increase in climbers’ prior experience increases the probability of an expedition ascent. 1. INTRODUCTION In 1895 the British climber Albert Mummery, perhaps the finest mountaineer of his time, and five others made the first serious attempt to climb a mountain exceeding 8,000 meters in height. The mountain they chose to climb was Nanga Parbat (8,126m), in present-day Pakistan. It is one of only fourteen mountains in the world whose peaks rise above 8,000m, all of which lie in the Himalaya or Karakoram mountains of India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Tibet.

  • Broad Peak. the Austrians Climbed Their Fourth of The
Pakistan Broad Peak. The Austrians climbed their fourth of the fourteen "8000ers” last summer, reaching the summit of Broad Peak (26,400 feet), the world’s twelfth highest peak, where they used neither high altitude porters nor oxygen. Indeed, although they had porters to help them onto the Baltoro Glacier, they carried all their supplies themselves on the final relay to Base Camp at 16,000 feet beside the Godwin- Austen Glacier, as well as on the mountain itself, and attribute their excellent acclimatization to this fact. On May 13, 1957 they began their reconnaissance up a rib on the western face of Broad Peak. They climbed a snow gully, rock, and then steep snow to Camp I at 19,000 feet. Steep ice, easier snow, and a steep ice-step led to Camp II at 21,000 feet. This camp, which lay at the lower side of a big plateau, was reached on May 21. The climbers were able in the next section to use some of the ropes fixed by the German Herrligkoffer’s expedition, which, in 1954, made the only other attempt on the mountain and had failed at 23,600 feet. All four members of the expedition left Camp III at 22,650 feet on May 29 in a summit try, but they reached only the col between the middle and main summits. A storm forced them back to Base Camp until June 7. On June 9 the four, Markus Schmuck (leader), Fritz Wintersteller, Kurt Diemberger, and Hermann Buhl, climbed to the summit of Broad Peak.

  • The Endless Knot: K2, Mountain of Dreams and Destiny
The Endless Knot: K2, Mountain of Dreams and Destiny. Kurt Diemberger. Translated by Audrey Salkeld. Grafton Books, London, 1991. 308 pages, profusely illustrated; diagrams and tables, necrology and bibliography. $32. This is not so much a mountaineering book as a love story. A story of the love between a man and a woman and their passion for mountains. A soliloquy rather than a narrative, a story of death and disaster with few heroes. At 60, Kurt Diemberger is a grand veteran of climbs around the world. Mountains are not the main part of his life—they are, he writes, “what we are living for”. Since his youth he has been devoted to mountains as climber, photographer, writer and lecturer. Julie Tullis became his acolyte and partner and her memory permeates this entire book. She was 47 when she died. Both were happily married—she in Britain, he in Italy—and both had children. They met in 1975 but climbed together for only five years. The Karakoram became their dream, and the summit of K2 their obsession. It is consoling to know they had reached their goal before Julie died, overcome on the descent. Most of the book is devoted to K2 but Diemberger tells brief, taut stories of Herman Buhl and himself on Chogolisa, and of how Julie and he almost died during their climb of Broad Peak. Many vivid flashbacks illuminate the central figure—Julie. In June, 1986, the encampment of the world’s greatest climbers from nine countries was happy and convivial; there was friendship without much compe tition.

This version has some minor corrections and modifications that inadvertently did not make it into the published version. 2. See Broad Peak Aftermath for follow-up on this article, including Diemberger’s comments and my response to them. Broad Peak and the 1957 Austrian Karakoram Expedition William Buxton [email protected] Introduction In 1957, a team of four Austrians — Marcus Schmuck, Hermann Buhl, Fritz Wintersteller and Kurt Diemberger — made an ascent of Broad Peak (8047 m). This climb was remarkable for a number of reasons, mostly to do with style: It was accomplished without supplementary oxygen. They had no porters on the mountain and carried everything themselves. All four team members summited (a first for an 8000-metre peak). By reaching the summit, Hermann Buhl became the first person to make two first ascents of a mountain over 8000 metres. Making this expedition all the more remarkable, Markus Schmuck and Fritz Wintersteller followed their ascent of Broad Peak with a flash ascent of a nearby mountain, Skil Brum (7360 m), which they climbed in pure alpine style. Starting from base camp at 4900 metres, they climbed to 6060 metres, where they camped. The following day they summited and then returned to their high camp. They descended the next morning. From base camp to base camp, the ascent of Skil Brum was done in 53 hours! From all of the above, this 1957 expedition was a wonderful precursor of the new style that was to follow, as exemplified in the climbs of Messner and Habeler.
