Athens, 11636, Greece 2South Aegean Region's Managing Authority, 22 Saki Karagiorga str., Ermoupolis, Syros, 841 00, Greece Keywords: Climate change, adaptation, region, island, South Aegean Presenting author email: [email protected] ABSTRACT The overall purpose of the Regional Adaptation Plan to Climate Change (RAPCC) of the South Aegean Region (SAR) is to contribute to enhancing the region's resilience to climate change in all sectoral policies as outlined in the National Climate Change Adaptation Strategy. This means increasing preparedness and capacity to address the impacts of climate change at local and regional level, developing a coherent approach and improving coordination. The methodology used to assess the climatic vulnerability of the individual sectors and geographical areas of the SAR and ultimately the climate risk assessment comprised nine solid steps beginning from defining “reference" changes of climatic variables to assess the vulnerability of the different activities and ending with ranking sectors and activities as to the magnitude of the risk. The analysis of the climatic vulnerability and danger and hence risk of the different sectors and activities of the South Aegean Region was carried out for the short and medium term (2021-2050) and long-term horizons (2071-2100) and distinct for the geographical units of Cyclades and Dodecanese. According to these findings the proposed measures in the RAPCC were based on island specific characteristics such as financial-social activities, geomorphology and developed both in horizontal and sectoral actions and classified into High, Medium and Low priority. -

In this study, scale insect (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha) specimens extracted from Hun- garian Natural History Museum soil samples (2970 samples in total), all of which were collected using soil and litter sampling devices, and extracted by Berlese funnel, were examined. From these samples, 43 scale insect species (Acanthococcidae 4, Coccidae 2, Micrococcidae 1, Ortheziidae 7, Pseudococcidae 21, Putoidae 1 and Rhizoecidae 7) were found in 16 European countries. In addition, a new species belong- ing to the family Pseudococcidae, Brevennia larvalis Kaydan, sp. -

A significant percentage of MSW originates from household activities. In this study we calculate the costs of setting up and running a zero-waste mortar-producing (ZWMP) process utilizing MSW in Northern Greece. The process is based on a thermal co-processing of properly dried and processed MSW with raw materials (limestone, clay materials, silicates and iron oxides) needed for the production of clinker and consequently of mortar in accordance with the Greek Patent 1003333, which has been proven to be an environmentally friendly process. According to our estimations, the amount of MSW generated in Central Macedonia, Western Macedonia and Eastern Macedonia and Thrace regions, which is conservatively estimated at 1,270,000 t/y for the year 2020 if recycling schemes in Greece are not greatly ameliorated, may sustain six ZWMP plants while offering considerable environmental benefits. This work can be applied to many cities and areas, especially when their population generates MSW at the level of 200,000 t/y, hence requiring one ZWMP plant for processing. -

The primal Greece : between dream and archaeology Introduction The Aegean civilisations in the French National Archaeological Museum « This unusual form […] reveals an unknown Greece within Greece […] as solemn, profound and colossal as the other is radiant, light and considered; […] all here meets the reputation of the Atrids and brings back the horror of the Achaean fables », wrote on 1830 in front of the walls of Mycenae, the traveller Edgard Quinet, who was passionate about Greek tragedies. Like other travellers before him, he was aware of approaching the memory of an unknown past, of a primal Greece, but he would never have believed that this Greece dated from prehistoric times. It will be the end of the 19th century before the pioneers of archaeology reveal to the world the first civilisations of the Aegean. The « Museum of National Antiquities» played then a key role, spreading the knowledge about these fabulous finds. Here, as well as in the Louvre, the public has been able to meet the Aegean civilisations. The Comparative Archaeology department had a big display case entirely dedicated to them. The exhibition invites visitors back to this era of endless possibilities in order to experience this great archaeological adventure. Birth of a state, birth of an archaeology As soon as it becomes independent (1832), Greece is concerned with preserving its antiquities and creates an Archaeological Service (1834). Shortly afterwards, Ephemeris Archaiologike, the first Greek archaeological review, is founded, at the same time as the Archaeological Society at Athens. The French School at Athens is founded in 1846 in order to promote the study of antiquities, and is followed by a German study Institute in 1874; many other countries will follow the example of France and Germany. -

Hydraulics and Land Reclamation, 541 24 Thessaloniki, Greece 1 [email protected], 2 [email protected], 3 [email protected] Abstract: Precipitation has been widely considered as a starting point towards the apprehension of climate changes courses, constituting one of the most substantial components of the hydrologic cycle. The purpose of this work is to investigate the temporal variability of precipitation in order to contribute to a better interpretation of the hydrological status of the study area located in Northern Greece within the prefecture of Pieria. The Aison River basin drains the water of its central part, forming the greatest receiver of surface water. The precipitation data refer to the period 1974-2007. The methodology adapts various statistical approaches in order to detect possible precipitation changes in annual, monthly and seasonal basis, including both tests for monotonic trend (Mann-Kendall test, Sequential version of the Mann- Kendall test, Sen’s estimator of slope) and a test for step change (the distribution-free CUSUM test). The application of this methodological framework resulted in the identification of a few trends, occurred mainly at smaller than annual time scales. An overall downward trend, even though no statistically significant, has derived for the stations located at lower altitudes, within the agricultural zone of Pieria. Regional (Aison River basin) total precipitation series has also displayed trends similar to the ones observed in the majority of stations. -

Gold output decreased pumice. In 2016, Greece was the world’s 2d-ranked perlite by 82%; crude attapulgite clay, by 58%; nitrogen (N content of producer, 3d-ranked pumice producer, 4th-ranked bentonite ammonia), by 37%; lignite coal, by 29%; pozzolan (santorin producer, 9th-ranked magnesite producer (not including the earth), by 24%; crude bentonite, by 21%; and processed United States), and 10th-ranked bauxite producer. Neolithic society in Northern Greece: the evidence of ground stone artefacts Volume I Christina Tsoraki Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Archaeology, University of Sheffield October 2008 to (j3en ABSTRACT Analysis of ground stone technology from the Neolithic of Greece rarely goes beyond incomplete descriptive accounts to focus on the activities performed with these tools and the contexts of their use. Ground stone products are seen as mundane static objects devoid of meaning and lacking significance. The aim of this thesis is to move away from incomplete accounts of ground stone technology and static typologies. Drawing upon the concepts of the chaine operatoire and 'object biographies' this thesis investigates ground stone technology as a social practice focusing on the life-cycle of artefacts from raw material selection to final deposition. The underlying premise is that a contextual approach can contribute to understanding the ways in which the production, consumption and discard of ground stone artefacts were structured within different forms and scales of social practice and the manner in which these differences articulated different meanings and social understandings. The aims of the thesis were materialised through the study of the rich ground stone assemblage from the LN settlement of Makriyalos, Greece. The analysis of the chaine operatoire of the Makriyalos ground stone assemblage revealed diverse technological choices expressed throughout the cycle of production and use. Established traditions existed according to which specific materials were considered to be appropriate for the production of different objects. Furthermore, detailed analysis suggests that the resulting objects were far from mundane artefacts but were instead active media for expressing choices informed by cultural understandings of appropriateness. -
