A S C O U T Is R E V E R E MOBILE AREA COUNCIL A Partnership for Our Youth Since 1910, the Boy Scouts of America has focused on working together with faith-based, civic, and educational organizations to deliver the nation’s foremost youth program of character development and values-based leadership training. The BSA provides an infrastructure that provides participants unique and valuable experiences, trains and protects its members, all while supporting its mission. Over 100,000 Scouting units are owned and operated by chartered organizations in the United States. 70% are chartered to faith-based organizations; 22% to civic organizations; and 8% to educational organizations. Services of the Boy Scouts of America As a partner of the BSA, a chartered organization receives countless services and resources assisting the organization in reaching their goals for their youth program. Outcome Focused Program: The BSA’s proven and time tested methods of values based programs, activities, and leadership training has made it part of the fabric of America. In “Merit Beyond the Badge,” a study by the Baylor Institute for Studies of Religion and Program for Prosocial Behavior, researchers found that Eagle Scouts have enhanced values, ethics, decision making, and personal development. Eagle Scouts show a greater connectedness to religious community and are more likely to volunteer with a religious organization. Youth Outreach: Organizations that have a Scouting unit have an endless opportunity for outreach and ministry to the youth and families in their unit. The majority of new families to Scouting do not have a home church. 40% of active Scouts attend religious services regularly. “Merit Beyond the Badge” found that Eagle Scouts were extremely close with their religious community, donated money to a religious institution within the last month, and were more likely to volunteer with a religious organization. Liability Insurance: The BSA provides liability, accident, and sickness insurance to chartered organizations, leaders, and families attending Scouting activities, which allows organizations to focus on program delivery. Youth Protection Policies and Procedures: The BSA requires background checks on all adult volunteers, comprehensive training programs for volunteers, staff, youth and parents, and mandates reporting of even suspected abuse. The BSA has continuously enhanced its multi- tiered policies and procedures to ensure it is in line with and ahead of society’s knowledge of abuse and best practices for prevention. BSA’s standards and relentless focus on youth protection have been recognized and praised by experts in child protection. MOBILE AREA COUNCIL Maubila Scout Reservation: Maubila Scout Reservation located near Jackson, Alabama is the council’s centerpiece for camping, water sports, and high adventure. Camp Maubila is located about 1 hour 40 minutes from downtown Mobile and encompasses over 686 acres. The property includes a lake for water sports, a swimming pool, a large dining hall, campsites, facilities for archery, marksmanship, air conditioned staff cabins and nature study. It also includes a state of the art conference and training facility for weekend conferences. Boy Scout Camp Pinetreat: Boy Scout Camp Pinetreat, located in Bay Minette, Alabama, is the council’s premiere weekend camping and t raining facility. Camp Pinetreat is located just 40 minutes north of downtown Mobile at exit 37 off of I-65 and encompasses 162 acres. The property includes a climbing wall, a swimming pool, camp sites for tent camping, plus air conditioning in our dining hall and three lodges and much more. Philmont Scout Ranch: Philmont Scout Ranch is the BSA’s largest national High Adventure Base. It covers 137,000 acres - about 214 square miles - of rugged mountain wilderness in the Sangre de Cristo range of the Rocky Mountains in northern New Mexico. 35 different backpacking treks, horseback cavalcades, and training and service programs offer young people many ways to experience the ultimate high adventure experience. The Summit: Located on 8,000 acres in Mount Hope, West Virginia, The Summit Bechtel Reserve is an adventure center for anyone who loves the outdoors. It opened in 2013 for the National Scout Jamboree. Scouts enjoy white water rafting, mountain biking, rock climbing, skateboarding, scuba, swimming, archery, zip lining, and canopy tours among many other opportunities to earn BSA merit badges. Florida Sea Base: The BSA’s Florida Sea Base is located in Islamorada and on Summerland Key in the beautiful Florida Keys, as well as March Harbour, Great Abaco Island, Bahamas. The near shore reefs and crystal clear waters offer unparalleled opportunities for long term and short term programs year round. Scouts make use of the 24 boats for fishing and diving in addition to the many sailboats. Northern Tier Canoe Base: Northern Tier is the BSA’s gateway to adventure in the Great Northwoods. Scouts explore millions of acres of pristine lakes, meandering rivers, dense forests and wetlands in Northern Minnesota, Northwest Ontario and Northeast Manitoba. Each trek typically covers 50 to 150 miles. Winter programs include cross-country skiing, dog sledding, snow shoeing, ice fishing, and shelter building..

Thank you for joining Troop 1776. As your participation in Troop meetings, activities and events increases, you will note the significant difference between the Boy Scout program, and the Cub Scout program you left behind. Unlike Cub Scouts, Boy Scout activities are entirely planned and led by the boys themselves. Adult supervision, for the purpose of safety and support, is always close at hand, but it is the boys themselves who are in charge of our Troop program. Scouting is all about leadership, and our Scouts are offered many opportunities to learn new skills, realize their own potential, and accept increasingly important responsibilities and leadership roles within the Troop. Our Scouting program is a team effort, and your son will have support and encouragement from Troop leadership and his peers, however, it is the personal responsibility of every Scout to seize the initiative and actively participate in our program to achieve his rank and leadership goals. Like Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting is a fun program for boys, but it can also be rewarding for our parents as well. Although the role of parents is quite different in Boy Scouting, Troop 1776 would not exist as a quality unit without the support and active participation of our parents in the life and operation of our Troop. Parents who wish to partner in their son’s Scouting adventure are most welcome to do so.
