Using a historical perspective, the work primarily examines the functions of these motifs within the design of the plays: how they contribute to the structure and unity of the works, how they assist in delineating some of the individual characters, and how they shape the atmosphere of specific dramatic situations. -

Classic Poetry Series George Chapman - poems - Publication Date: 2012 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive George Chapman(1559 – 12 May 1634) George Chapman was an English dramatist, translator, and poet. He was a classical scholar whose work shows the influence of Stoicism. Chapman has been identified as the Rival Poet of <a href="http://www.poemhunter.com/william- shakespeare/">Shakespeare's</a> sonnets by William Minto, and as an anticipator of the Metaphysical Poets of the 17th century. Chapman is best remembered for his translations of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, and the <a href="http://www.poemhunter.com/homer/">Homeric</a> Batrachomyomachia. <b>Life and work</b> Chapman was born at Hitchin in Hertfordshire. There is conjecture that he studied at Oxford but did not take a degree, though no reliable evidence affirms this. We know very little about Chapman's early life, but Mark Eccles uncovered records that reveal much about Chapman's difficulties and expectations. In 1585 Chapman was approached in a friendly fashion by John Wolfall, Sr., who offered to supply a bond of surety for a loan to furnish Chapman money "for his proper use in Attendance upon the then Right Honorable Sir Rafe Sadler Knight." Chapman's courtly ambitions led him into a trap. He apparently never received any money, but he would be plagued for many years by the papers he had signed. Wolfall had the poet arrested for debt in 1600, and when in 1608 Wolfall's son, having inherited his father's papers, sued yet again, Chapman's only resort was to petition the Court of Chancery for equity. -

1 Th’ Unconsidered Soldier’ Horace Vere and the genesis of the British military, 1565-1635 By Robert James Gill. Canterbury Christ Church University Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2020 2 Abstract This thesis provides the first scholarly assessment of the role of Horace Vere, Ist baron Tilbury, as a major progenitor of the English and later British army. As commander of the English land forces in the Low Countries for 30 years Horace Vere made a considerable contribution to the organisation, training and discipline of the English military during their transition from a mediaeval conscript force to a highly trained, professional fighting army. Set against the backdrop of both the Dutch wars of independence and the advent of the Thirty Years War, Vere’s ‘Compendium of the Art of War’, produced between 1611 and 1614 was one of the earliest drill manuals in English. A comprehensive guide for officers and men the Compendium covered most aspects of infantry training especially regarding the use of firearms in the field but it also encompasses supply, encampment and logistical matters. Significantly too, Vere’s long period of successful command attracted a large number of young men to serve and learn under his tutelage. Many of these men later went on to become leaders themselves during the English Civil Wars and then to establish the first permanent, standing, early modern British army with unbroken links to today’s military. Horace Vere was also a notably pious Puritan at a time when religion loomed large and he was an active and influential supporter of many radical divines when such support was not without its dangers and disadvantages. -

Given his leading role at court in what Patrick Collinson calls the “nasty nineties,” Essex has taken much of the blame for the divisive factional politics of Elizabeth’s final decade. However, leading recent efforts to salvage Essex’s reputation, historian Paul Hammer has uncovered a sophisticated bureaucracy operated by highly educated scholars and led by an intelligent, cultivated statesman. A considerable number of high-profile literary figures, moreover, willingly engaged with this ambitiously expanding Essex faction. -

This paper addresses the glosses of the first edition of George Chapman's philosophical elegy, The Shadow of Night (1594), as a specific and common practice of prescriptive work, produced by Renaissance authors following the ancient tradition of the auctoris interpretatio. Assuming the gloss as an exposition and scrutiny of the places of poetic invention and elocution, Chapman puts himself in the position of both annotator and authorizer of his text, defining a particular legibility for the poem within the learned circles of the English court of Shakespeare’s time. -

Transcript – Deborah Harkness interview 29/12/20 Sarah: Welcome Deborah Harkness, lovely to see you, thank you so much for agreeing to the interview with us at Syon House. I’m Sarah Ponder, one of the historic guides here at Syon and we’re very excited about the new season of ADOW which was absolutely huge on Sky. And the books as well, especially Shadow of Night which features our very own Wizard Earl, 9th Earl of Northumberland Henry Percy and the School of Night. As you can see the Long Gallery behind me, they would have come here and talked about magick and alchemy and allsorts so it’s fantastic to see them come to life in popular fiction and have them immortalised on TV. We’re really excited to see it. So we left Season 1 and the first book where Matthew and Diana time travel to 1590 Elizabethan England. Syon House’s link with the school of the night starts a little bit later when Henry Percy acquires the house in 1597, so a few years later but he’s very well ensconced with his coterie of ‘mathmagicians’ Deb: I like that! I’m going to steal that. Sarah: Absolutely! Henry is a real hero of mine, recently finished my History degree and wrote my dissertation on him and the patronage he offered. Lockdown learning, a renaissance earl’s academy in the tower, the super group of tutors he had for his son Algernon when he was imprisoned there after 1605. Having the school of the night at Syon is a real coup for us and we’re hoping to see more of them during the series.
