Ofthe total area surveyed, 6.0 ha falls in Grade 2. Profiles are well to moderately welldrairied with light to medium textured topsoils and subsoils. Weathering limestone bedrock occurs at depth in places and the ALC grade ofthe land is restricted by either slight soil wetness or slight soil droughtiness. 16.0 ha falls in Subgrade 3a. • Profiles are either well drained with light or medium-textured topsoils and subsoils, which are either slightly to very stony or overlie weathering limestone bedrock at around 50cm depth (in which.case soil droughtiness limits the ALC grade) or imperfectly drained with medium-textured topsoils and, in places, upper subsoils overlying gleyed, slowly permeable heavy clay loam or clay (in which case soil wetness limits the land to Subgrade 3a). 8.7 ha falls in Subgrade 3b. Profiles are either well drained, with medium-textured topsoils directly overlying weathering limestone bedrock at around 35cm depth (m which case soil droughtiness limits the land to Subgrade 3b), or imperfectly to pooriy drained with heavy clay loam topsoils overlying slowly permeable' clay subsoils at between 35cm and 40cm depth (in which case soil wetness and workability limit the ALC grade). 1.1 ha of land falls in Grade 4.     Press Release News…Results…News…Results…Tables… th ISSUE No. 38 WEEK ENDING 7 May 2005 REVIEW OF THE WEEK At a board of appeal held in London on Wednesday the Football Association upheld appeals by Hyde United and Workington against a decision of the League’s Board to expunge Spennymoor United’s playing record. The FA also ordered that three points be awarded to Spennymoor’s opponents for each of the nine unplayed games. When the board expunged Spennymoor’s record last Sunday Farsley Celtic had become Champions as they won only one point in two games against the “Moors” compared to the six points deducted from leaders Workington and three points from 2 nd place Hyde. Following the appeal decision, however, Hyde United became Champions with Farsley reverting back to third place. Another significant factor of the FA’s decision was that the six points awarded to Prescot Cables catapulted them in to the play-offs above Burscough . As the FA’s decision was final and binding, subsequent appeals by Farsley and Burscough were rejected by the FA resulting in both clubs mounting legal challenges to leave the Premier Division play-offs delayed a further week. Fortunately the First Division play-offs were a total success with 1-0 semi-final wins for AFC Telford United and Kendal Town setting up an intriguing clash on Saturday in which Telford clinched the third promotion place in front of a crowd in excess of 4,000. In a thrilling two legged Chairman’s Cup Final Kidsgrove Athletic edged out Woodley Sports 7-6.

    ST BARTHOLOMEW'S CHURCH, ARMLEY by C.R.A. Davies photographs THE SCHULZE ORGAN RESTORED BY HARRISON & HARRISON ST BARTHOLOMEW'S CHURCH, ARMLEY The organ was built in 1869 by J.F. Schulze & Sons of Paulinzelle, Germany, for T.S. Kennedy of Meanwood Towers, Leeds. A special wood-framed organ house, large enough for some 800 people, was built to accommodate it. In 1877 the organ was loaned to St Peter's Church Harrogate, and in 1879 it was installed by Brindley & Foster in the north transept of St Bartholomew's Church, with two additional Pedal stops (1 and 3) supplied by Schulze. The case of American walnut was made at this time. In 1905 the organ was rebuilt by J.J. Binns of Bramley, Leeds. Binns was a strong admirer of Schulze's work, and aimed to preserve the organ's musical character. He installed his patent pneumatic action and a new console, but retained the original pipework*, slider soundboards and much of the wind system. The only significant change since then was the removal of Binns's combination action in 1976. In 2004 the organ was comprehensively restored to its 1905 state, but with two alterations. First, the Choir and Echo Organs, which were placed low down at the back of the instrument, have been raised to the same level as the Great Organ so that their gentle sounds can be heard more clearly. Secondly, the 1976 piston system has been replaced by a modern setter system, unobtrusively installed together with electro-pneumatic drawstop mechanism on traditional lines.
