Its central area is occupied by an old industrial region which has been developed since the 19th century on the basis of coal mining and the processing of iron, zinc and lead ores. As a result of the political transformation of the country, after 1989, the region was faced with a difficult economic situation – a significant reduction in production was recorded and numerous unprofitable obsolete mines and steelworks were decommissioned. Since then, the economy of the Silesian region has been subject to restructuring and revitalization. This article presents this process as illustrated by a representative city – Żory. This is one of the oldest cities in the region which was established in the Middle Ages (1272). For centuries, its inhabitants were engaged in agriculture, fish breeding and trade. Its industrial development started with the construction of the ironworks at the beginning of the 19th century, but the investments after the Second World War were of greatest importance to the city. At that time the “Fadom” factory, two hard coal mines – “Żory” and “Krupiński” – and a plant known as Zakład Tworzyw Sztucznych ERG (Synthetic Fibres Works “ERG”) were constructed. -

The part of the assessmentare macrophyte – based methods used in the evaluation of the ecologicalcondition of rivers in respect of biodiversity. The Macrophyte Method for River Assessment has been used in Poland since 2007 and provides us with an information about ecological state of the rivers. Presented analyses were aimed to describe macrophyte development in the sandylowland type of river in the Silesian Upland. The assessment was made for lowland Pszczynka River (45.8 km total length, total catchment area 368.3 km2), which is a left-bank tributary of Vistula River. At the selected 10 research sections of the river (100 m each) the composition of macrophytes and abiotic conditions of the river were described. The paper presents the results of preliminary assessment of ecological condition of Pszczynka River on the background sources of substances discharged to the riveralongits course. Macrophyte Index for Rivers (MIR) was calculated based on the results of the research – river bed surface coverage by the particular plant species. The MIR limit values were used to determine the class of water quality in the examined river. -

Przegl¹d Geologiczny, vol. 53, nr 9, 2005 Surowce mineralne Górnoœl¹skiego Zag³êbia Wêglowego i obszarów przyleg³ych Wies³aw Gabzdyl*, Bronis³awa Hanak* Raw materials from the Upper Silesia Coal Basin and from the adjacent areas. Prz. Geol., 53: 726–733. Summary. In the Upper Silesia Coal Basin and on the adjoining areas, besides dominant in resources and the amount of bituminous coal output, there of other occurs mineral raw materi- als. In spite of local industry restructuring, production of mineral raw materials in this region still remains significant for its economy. Among other European Community countries the larg- est bituminous coal resources occur in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. Poland is the European Union leader in coal production and export. Exploitation of some mineral raw materials, such as: iron ores, zinc-lead ores and brown coal, in different times was discontinued while others W. Gabzdyl B. Hanak (rock salt, Mo-W-Cu ore) from beds recognized to a different degree was not started. Making use of waste mineral raw materials, mainly mining, metallurgical and energetic ones, is becoming more and more significant economically and ecologically. Sometimes synthetic raw materials are produced, such as: gypsum (desulphogypsum) obtained from desulphurisation of fumes, Ca-Mg fertilizers from dolomite wastes, crushed and synthetic aggregates from mining and metallurgical wastes, lead and silver from recycling and salt from coalmine water desalination. On the basis of imported raw minerals, iron, steel and ferroalloys are produced. Zn-Pb concentrates are also imported on larger scale. Such raw materials as: raw materials used for production of noble ceramics and rock wool are delivered from other regions of the country. -

The methane resources were estimated by means of a volumetric method at three depth levels, 1000, 1250, and 1500 m. A part of the Studzienice deposit comprising three coal seams, 333, 336, and 337, located in a methane zone was chosen for the numerical modeling of simulated methane production. The presented static 3D model has been developed using Petrel Schlumberger software. The total resources of methane in the area amount to approximately 446.5 million of Nm3. Numerical simulations of methane production from the selected coal seams with hydraulic fracturing were conducted by means of Schlumberger ECLIPSE reservoir simulator. Based on the simulations, it was concluded that, in the first six months of the simulations, water is produced from the seams, which is connected with the decrease in the rock mass pressure. -
