Case Closed Or Evidence Ignored? John H. Davis
CASE CLOSED OR EVIDENCE IGNORED? JOHN H. DAVIS CASE CLOSED OR EVIDENCE IGNORED? Gerald Posner's book, CASE CLOSED - Lee Harvey Oswald and The Assassination of JFK, is essentially a lawyer's prosecutorial brief against Oswald as the lone, unaided assassin of President Kennedy, emphasizing the slender evidence for his sole guilt, and downplaying, even ignoring, the substantial body of evidence that suggests he might have had confederates. The book contains nothing new except a wildly implausible theory of the first shot fired at the presidential motorcade in Dealey Plaza. Essentially the book is a re-hash of a thirty-year-old discredited theory that repeats many of the failings of the Warren Commission's deeply flawed 1964 investigation. Along the way Mr. Posner is guilty of gross misstatements of fact and significant selective omission of crucial evidence. Mr. Posner's new theory of the first shot is perhaps the most implausible of any JFK assassination writer, including the wildest conspiracy theorists. Posner would have us believe that Lee Harvey Oswald's first shot was fired between Zapruder film frames 160 and 166 through the foliage of a tree and was deflected away from the presidential motorcade by a branch. Any marksman knows that his first shot at a target is always 2 his best shot because he has time to aim without the interference of having to operate the bolt in a hurry to load. Posner would have the marksman Oswald take his first shot through a thicket of tree branches and leaves when he couldn't clearly see his target. -

GREEN WATCH BANNER TO BE INSERTED HERE James Hoffa (Both of Them) and the “Central States” Crackup The Teamsters’ pension plan endangers the U.S. agency that backs pensions By Carl F. Horowitz Summary: Jimmy Hoffa, the legendary boss of the Teamsters union, vanished in 1975, presumably meeting his demise at the hands of associates from the world of organized crime. Yet his legacy lives on, in the form of the Central States Pen- sion Fund. Today, the fund pays $3.46 in retirement benefits for each dollar it col- lects from employers, and it has a long- term shortfall so large that it could bust the nation’s pension guarantee system. our decades ago, the International During a 1957 Senate racketeering hearing managed by Senate staffer Rob- ert F. Irwin Signey Weiner Biographical Summar-y (1341) Irwin Signey Weiner was born on March 6, 1916, in Chicago, Ill ., the son of Leon Weiner, a bookmaker who was shot to death in it murder-suicide incident in Chicago. 1Veiner has been described as 5 feet 51;2 inches, 160 pounds, stocky with blue eyes and brown hair. Iii 1970, he was residing in -Niles. Ill. He had never served in the mili- tary and had no felony record. (2204.) (1 :342) Weiner's connections to organized crime were a dominant, if not pervasive, eienient in his life, and they included both direct ;inks to the highest levels of organized crime nationally and in Chi- cago, and less definitive relationships with seemingly legitimate activi- ies. In a Washington Post article; he was characterized as follows . Irwin Weiner is thought to be the underworld's major financial figure in the Midwest." (2205) Almost all documentation concerning Weiner contains references to known organized crime members, and a comprehensive list of his associates would include a significant num- ber of the major organized crime figures in the United States. (2206) Trcat»z~e)it by the ll'a1 ,relt ConzIyiissioib (1343) The only reference to Irwin Weiner by the Warren Commis- sion occurs in the Commission's examination ofV Jack Ruby's telephone records; which indicated a call from Ruby to IV, einer (Chicago num- ber SH 3-6865) on October 26, 1960'. (2207) Ruby was never questioned about this call ; Weiner was never questioned at all . This omission is consistent with the Commission's overall failure to investigate possible organized crime connections. -

THE IRISHMAN LUKE 23: “Forgive them, O Lord, For they know not what they do.” * To Robert De Niro as Frank Sheeran: “He’s Dead.” De Niro: “Who did it?” “Cancer” * Why do we not respond To the Frank Sheeran character as his daughter responds to him— With horror and disgust? We know even more than she, Though we also know she loves—it is The only romance in the film— The man Sheeran murders. The answer is De Niro plays him as an innocent Who does not know The effect he has, Who has no capacity for sympathy or compassion And who is bewildered at The way things turn out “Frank, you’re a family man,” But his family fears and hates him. His true family is La Cosa Nostra—a phrase Never uttered in this film. We share the innocence Of this Italian-speaking Irisher. He kills; we do not. It is only The banality of evil. “It’s like the Army,” Sheeran says, “You do what they tell you, You get rewarded.” They tell you to kill, you kill. Al Pacino plays Jimmy Hoffa, The man Sheeran kills, In a scene-stealing whirlwind Of a performance That is constantly On the edge Of visionary madness, Almost every motion An astonishment. “They wouldn’t dare! I know things They don’t know I know.” He is the great authority figure Of Sheeran’s life, His Pope, his Patton. He brags, “In the fifties Hoffa was as big as Elvis, In the sixties he was as big as The Beatles!” American celebrity drives Sheeran But he also wears the ring Of the secret society Of murderers and gangsters. -

The Life and Times of Jimmy Hoffa Abstract In light of Martin Scorsese's popular movie "The Irishman," it is a good time to reassess Jimmy Hoffa. He's probably the most famous union leader in American history, but the only thing most people know of him is that he ran the Teamsters and was closely connected to the Mafia. He is often seen as nothing but a corrupt, evil, greedy sellout. The reality is a little different. In this article I discuss his record as a labor leader, the attacks on him by the McClellan Committee and Bobby Kennedy, and his ties to organized crime. I try to contextualize the Teamsters union of Hoffa's era, while at the same time providing a corrective to the public's overwhelmingly negative views of him. -

On Sept. 27, a girl died after a gunman took six girls hostage at a Colorado high school. On Sept. 29 a 15-year-old boy shot his high school principle. And Monday, six people were killed at an Amish school in Pennsylvania. “I believe (school shooting) is a trend,” said Clayton Williams, detective with the Safe Unit of Waco Police Department. “There is no real profile of an active shooter.” The Baylor Police Department is prepared and trained for dealing with a possible gunman, Chief of Police Jim Doak said. “We have been (prepared) ever since Colum- bine,” Doak said. “Universities and schools have talked in length about it. You never know when or where it can happen, so with that thought in mind we began investing in a program.” Many of the Baylor police officers have un- dergone training on how to respond to an active shooter, Doak said. “We have to been trained on how to address those type of situations swiftly and decisively,” he said. “We drill on those types of things and how to practice responses.” Associated Press Reporters surround an Amish man in his horse drawn buggy near the site of a shoolhouse dozen girls hostage in the one-room Amish schoolhouse, barricaded the doors with Please see SAFETY, page 6 shooting in Nickel Mines, Pa. -
