2 Understanding Double Sided Tapes Cutting the Red Tape Your guide to double sided adhesive tapes

With a complex market offering, knowing what tape to use and when to use it can be overwhelming, but using the right tape for the job provides multiple benefits that will help maximise both productivity and profitability:

Improved reliability and increased confidence Increased application efficiency Cost effectiveness

Spandex offers a wide range of double sided tapes from industry- leading brands for all signs and graphics applications.

To help guide you through the tape selection process, we have broken down the four most important elements you need to consider for each application:

Surface Application Load Environment

Understanding Double Sided Tapes 3 Surface

There are many factors to consider when thinking about bonding surfaces.

The right carrier will ensure the appropriate level of contact with the surface; the adhesive type will ensure the tape sticks effectively; a matched tape and surface energy will ensure a good adhesive spread; and taking plasticisers into account will ensure the tape stays in place in line with application requirements.

The right carrier for your surface

Carriers are used to carry the adhesive and add structure making the tape more user friendly and easier to handle. The type of carrier you may need depends on the materials involved and the application itself. Surface contact is a key factor in the selection of the right carrier to ensure uniform contact and protection from certain damaging factors.

Below is a summary of the carriers and their characteristics:

Carrier type Thick carrier Thin carrier Flat and smooth Textured Gap filling Sock absorbtion Thinnest bondline Polyester l l PVC l l l Polyurethane foam l l l l l Acrylic foam l l l l l No carrier l l l

4 Understanding Double Sided Tapes Understanding Double Sided Tapes 5 Surface complexity

Knowing the complexity of the bonding / laminating surface will help you determine what type of carrier and adhesive you need. You will need thicker tapes for more complex surfaces whereas thinner tapes are ideal for flat and even surfaces.

Below is a guide of surface complexities and the types of tape you will need:

Smooth and flat Smooth but uneven Rough and even All tape types are suitable Foam tapes and transfer tapes Thick transfer tapes and foam tapes

Rough but uneven Textured and flat Textured but uneven Thick transfer tapes and high Thick transfer tapes and Thick transfer tapes and high adhesive mass foam tapes foam tapes adhesive mass foam tapes

The right adhesive for your surface

Our range features three of the most common adhesive types, each offering its own features, benefits and limitations.

Rubber - High level of and initial tack on a good variety of surfaces including low surface energy (LSE) materials.

Acrylic - Offers better resistance to plasticisers, oils and chemicals over rubber but are better suited to medium-high energy surfaces.

Modified acrylic - Acrylic that have been modified to perform better in specific areas, offer an excellent balance of properties and work on many common surfaces and materials.

Below is a summary of the adhesives and their characteristics:

Adhesive type High adhesion High initial tack Ultimate bond strength High shear strength High temp resistance Plasticiser resistance (PMR) Low surface energy bonding Humidity resistance UV Resistance Solvent / chemical resistance Rubber l l l Acrylic l l l l l l l l Modified acrylic l l l l l l l l

6 Understanding Double Sided Tapes Thinking about surface energy

The surface energy of a material will affect the adhesive’s ability to spread over the surface. Low surface energy (LSE) materials resist adhesive spread making bonding more difficult.

High surface energy (HSE) materials allow an excellent spread of adhesive and provide the best adhesion. Rubber based and modified acrylic adhesives typically offer better adhesion to LSE surfaces or materials as the adhesive reacts similarly to that on HSE materials and allows a good spread of adhesive.

The diagrams below represent the spread of a water droplet on different surface energies:

High Surface Energy Low Surface Energy

Below is a general summary of different adhesive types, service temperatures and their bonding capabilities to different surface energy materials:

High Surface Energy Low Surface Energy Surface / Material Stainless steel Aluminium Glass Phenolic Nylon Polyester Polyester paint Polyurethane paint ABS Polycarbonate PVC Coated board Ceramic Enamelled steel Galvanised steel Acrylic paint Painted steel MDF Brickwork Composite aluminium PBT Polystyrene Acrylic Polyethylene Polypropylene Powder coated metals Teflon Tyvek Silicone

Rubber Adhesive - Temperatures up to 900C

Modified Acrylic Adhesive - Temperatures up to 1600C

Pure Acrylic Adhesive - Temperatures up to 1500C Adhesive Bonding Capability (Approx.)

Plasticiser migration from your surface / materials

Plasticisers are commonly found in vinyls and and over time can migrate into the surrounding materials potentially damaging them and affecting performance and lifespan.

Plasticiser migration resistance (PMR) in an adhesive designed to prevent migration by creating a block and ensuring long lasting performance.

Understanding Double Sided Tapes 7 Application

Application refers to both the type of application and also the application conditions where a tape will be applied.

Application types

Although an adhesive tape may have been designed for a specific purpose, it doesn’t mean you’re restricted to only that use.

Good tapes will often prove useful in a multitude of different applications. Depending on the model, our tapes are suitable for the following applications as well as many other non-sign making applications.

Banner seaming and hemming Automotive trims Nameplates and fascias Boards and posters Panel mounting Illuminated displays Metal fabrication Splicing POP displays Invisible applications External signage Temporary or short term applications

Application conditions

After selecting the right tape with the right features it is essential to ensure the tape is applied correctly and in the right conditions. Ensure the bonding surface / material is clean, dry and free from oils and contaminants.

Make sure you are applying the tape in the correct temperature range and ensure a sufficient amount of pressure is applied with an adequate roller tool.

Reaching the maximum adhesion level can take up to 72 hours so make sure you keep this in mind, especially on applications with a high level of stress.

8 Understanding Double Sided Tapes Load

Load refers to the stress that a tape will have to endure when in-situ. An adhesive that bonds well to a specific surface is not necessarily suited to deal with stresses such as a heavy weight load, friction or movement.

Weight

Knowing the weight of the materials involved will help you select an appropriate tape.

Heavy weight loads require tapes with high internal strength and adhesives with high shear strength which provide additional resistance against tearing and stretching.

Friction and movement

Polyethylene foam and acrylic foam carriers help absorb friction and movement which is unavoidable in certain applications.

This extra level of absorption helps reduce vibrations and noise and prevents anything from moving or shaking loose. Tapes with high shear strength are ideal for applications subject to these stresses and will help prevent the tape from shearing.

Understanding Double Sided Tapes 9 Environment

Knowing the environment your tapes will operate in is key. There are many damaging factors that need to be considered before choosing the right tape.

Temperatures

Knowing the required service temperature will allow you to choose a tape that’s built to perform rather than something that will underperform in excess high or low temperatures.

Inside or outside

Some tapes and adhesives are not built for external use and may break down over time causing failure. It’s important that you select an appropriate tape to ensure a long and reliable lifespan.

Harmful environmental factors

Be mindful of harmful environmental factors such as UV exposure, moisture, chemicals and oils.

Certain adhesives offer protection against these elements so it is vital you use the right one to block anything that can have a negative effect on the tape’s performance or lifespan.
