The Paintings and Sculpture Given to the Nation by Mr. Kress and Mr
e. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE THE COLLECTIONS OF THE NATIONAL GALLERY OF ART \YASHINGTON The National Gallery will open to the public on March 18, 1941. For the first time, the Mellon Collection, deeded to the Nation in 1937, and the Kress Collection, given in 1939, will be shown. Both collections are devoted exclusively to painting and sculpture. The Mellon Collection covers the principal European schools from about the year 1200 to the early XIX Century, and includes also a number of early American portraits. The Kress Collection exhibits only Italian painting and sculpture and illustrates the complete development of the Italian schools from the early XIII Century in Florence, Siena, and Rome to the last creative moment in Venice at the end of the XVIII Century. V.'hile these two great collections will occupy a large number of galleries, ample space has been left for future development. Mr. Joseph E. Videner has recently announced that the Videner Collection is destined for the National Gallery and it is expected that other gifts will soon be added to the National Collection. Even at the present time, the collections in scope and quality will make the National Gallery one of the richest treasure houses of art in the wor 1 d. The paintings and sculpture given to the Nation by Mr. Kress and Mr. Mellon have been acquired from some of -2- the most famous private collections abroad; the Dreyfus Collection in Paris, the Barberini Collection in Rome, the Benson Collection in London, the Giovanelli Collection in Venice, to mention only a few. -

ABSTRACT This thesis examines a group of terracotta sculptures attributed to an artist known as the Master of the Unruly Children. The name of this artist was coined by Wilhelm von Bode, on the occasion of his first grouping seven works featuring animated infants in Berlin and London in 1890. Due to the distinctive characteristics of his work, this personality has become a mainstay of scholarship in Renaissance sculpture which has focused on identifying the anonymous artist, despite the physical evidence which suggests the involvement of several hands. Chapter One will examine the historiography in connoisseurship from the late nineteenth century to the present and will explore the idea of the scholarly “construction” of artistic identity and issues of value and innovation that are bound up with the attribution of these works. -

STEPPING OUT OF BRUNELLESCHI’S SHADOW. THE CONSECRATION OF SANTA MARIA DEL FIORE AS INTERNATIONAL STATECRAFT IN MEDICEAN FLORENCE Roger J. Crum In his De pictura of 1435 (translated by the author into Italian as Della pittura in 1436) Leon Battista Alberti praised Brunelleschi’s dome of Florence cathedral, Santa Maria del Fiore [Fig. 1], as ‘such a large struc- ture’ that it rose ‘above the skies, ample to cover with its shadow all the Tuscan people’.1 Alberti was writing metaphorically, but he might as easily have written literally in prediction of the shadowing effect that Brunelleschi’s dome, dedicated on 30 August 1436, would eventually cast over the Florentine cultural and historical landscape of the next several centuries.2 So ever-present has Brunelleschi’s structure been in the historical perspective of scholars – not to mention in the more popular conception of Florence – that its stately coming into being in the Quattrocento has almost fully overshadowed in memory and sense of importance another significant moment in the history of the cathedral and city of Florence that immediately preceded the dome’s dedication in 1436: the consecration of Santa Maria del Fiore itself on 25 March of that same year.3 The cathedral was consecrated by Pope Eugenius IV (r. 1431–1447), and the ceremony witnessed the unification in purpose of high eccle- siastical, foreign, and Florentine dignitaries. The event brought to a close a history that had begun 140 years earlier when the first stones of the church were laid in 1296; in 1436, the actual date of the con- secration was particularly auspicious, for not only is 25 March the feast of the Annunciation, but in the Renaissance that day was also the start of the Florentine calendar year. -

I?), in the Spedale Maestri in Torrita, southeast of Siena, was, in fact, the common source for Vecchietta and Francesco di Giorgio. The work is generally dated to the 1430s and has been associated, conjecturally, with Donatello's tabernacle for Saint Peter's in Rome. 16 However, it was first mentioned in the nirieteenth century, when it adorned the fa<;ade of the church of the Madonna della Neve in Torrita, and it is difficult not to believe that the relief was deposited in that provincial outpost of Sienese territory following modifications in the cathedral of Siena in the seventeenth or eighteenth century. A date for the relief in the late I4 5os is not impossible. There is, in any event, a curious similarity between Donatello's inclusion of two youthful angels standing on the edge of the lunette to frame the composition and Vecchietta's introduction of two adoring angels on rocky mounds in his Resurrection. It may be said with little exaggeration that in Siena Donatello provided the seeds and Pius II the eli mate for the dominating style in the last four decades of the century. The altarpieces commissioned for Pienza Cathedral(see fig. IS, I8) are the first to utilize standard, Renaissance frames-obviously in con formity with the wishes of Pius and his Florentine architect-although only two of the "illustrious Si enese artists," 17 Vecchietta and Matteo di Giovanni, succeeded in rising to the occasion, while Sano di Pietro and Giovanni di Paolo attempted, unsuccessfully, to adapt their flat, Gothic figures to an uncon genial format. -

Sculptors' Jewellery Offers an Experience of Sculpture at Quite the Opposite End of the Scale
SCULPTORS’ JEWELLERY PANGOLIN LONDON FOREWORD The gift of a piece of jewellery seems to have taken a special role in human ritual since Man’s earliest existence. In the most ancient of tombs, archaeologists invariably excavate metal or stone objects which seem to have been designed to be worn on the body. Despite the tiny scale of these precious objects, their ubiquity in all cultures would indicate that jewellery has always held great significance.Gold, silver, bronze, precious stone, ceramic and natural objects have been fashioned for millennia to decorate, embellish and adorn the human body. Jewellery has been worn as a signifier of prowess, status and wealth as well as a symbol of belonging or allegiance. Perhaps its most enduring function is as a token of love and it is mostly in this vein that a sculptor’s jewellery is made: a symbol of affection for a spouse, loved one or close friend. Over a period of several years, through trying my own hand at making rings, I have become aware of and fascinated by the jewellery of sculptors. This in turn has opened my eyes to the huge diversity of what are in effect, wearable, miniature sculptures. The materials used are generally precious in nature and the intimacy of being worn on the body marries well with the miniaturisation of form. For this exhibition Pangolin London has been fortunate in being able to collate a very special selection of works, ranging from the historical to the contemporary. To complement this, we have also actively commissioned a series of exciting new pieces from a broad spectrum of artists working today. -

Although scholarship on public outdoor sculpture in the Southwest of Nigeria is becoming steady in growth, yet a reconnaissance study of the pottery sculpture in art practice and historical perspective has not been made. A study of this type of art, erected in the garden of Ife art school is exigent and paramount now that many of the works are not being maintained. The study underscores the inherent values in the genre of the art; and examined pottery sculpture types, its uses in public sphere and its development in morphology, iconic thematic and stylistic expressions. The study observed that outdoor pottery sculptures are impressive, apparent in sculpture multiplicity of type and dynamics; it is rare in occurrence in Southwestern Nigeria. Tuscany alone boasts six UNESCO sites, almost equalling the numbers of countries like Croatia, Finland and Norway. Tuscany enshrines 6 Unesco World Heritage Sites you should definitely consider when planning your Tuscany tour. Here is the list: 1) Florence. Everything that could be said about the historic centre of Florence has already been said. Art, history, territory, atmosphere, traditions, everybody loves this city depicted by many as the Cradle of the Renaissance. Florence attracts millions of tourists every year and has been declared a World Heritage Site due to the fact that it represents a masterpiece of human creative genius + other 4 selection criteria. 2) Piazza dei Miracoli, Pisa. It was declared a Unesco World Heritage Site in 1987 and is basically a wide walled area, partially paved and partially covered by grass, dominated by 4 great religious buildings: the Duomo, the Leaning Tower, the Baptistry and the Camposanto. 3) San Gimignano has been a World Heritage Site since 1990 and is considered the emblem of medieval Tuscany. Its historic centre represents a masterpiece of human creative genius, it bears a unique testimony to Tuscan civilization and surely is an outstanding example of architectural ensemble, which illustrates significant stages in human history. 4) 40 kilometers away from San Gimignano stands Siena, the historical enemy of Florence. 1 Silver or Gold: The Color of Brass Instruments in the Late Middle Ages Timothy J. McGee The purpose of this article is to lay out some details I have gathered about brass instruments during the late Middle Ages as a way of requesting assistance from the readers of this jour- nal. As will become immediately evident, I am using the word "brass" in its meaning as a synonym for "cup-mouthpiece instruments," because my question has to do with the actual material the instruments were made of. In the process of researching the activities of the civic musicians of Florence during the twelfth to the sixteenth centuries, I have encountered considerable confusion about the material used for trumpets and trombones, and about the symbolism intended by the use of particular metals. Here is what I have found. The earliest reference to the employment of civic musicians in Florence is from gov- ernment documents of 8 February 1292' naming six trumpet players (tubatores) along with a player of the cenamella (probably a double reed) and another who played cimballella (undoubtedly the cymbals). The civic ensemble, known as the trombadori, was part of the ceremonial presence of Florence, participating in all official functions such as the frequent processions welcoming distinguished foreign visitors to the city, civic celebrations in honor of saints' days, or assemblies in which the governing executive appeared in public. The trombadori also accompanied the military in the field, and acted as representatives of the city of Florence by participating in celebrations in other cities.
