Knowledge is to be acquired by both men and women—not only for the sake of its practical application, but as an end in itself. — Rabindranath Tagore ―Stree Shiksha‖Women‘s Education] One of the various spheres in which Indian Higher Education Institutions have made tremendous advancements in the last few decades is that of women‘s education. Durgapur Women‘s College is proud to be a significant contributor to this progressive trend. Durgapur Women‘s College is located (23°33‘05.7‘‘ N and 87° 17‘51.0‖E) on Mahatma Gandhi Road of Steel City Durgapur, under the jurisdiction of Burdwan district, West Bengal. The establishment of a college in this part of the state was the result of the government policy – ―Education for the People‖. Durgapur Women‘s College , situated on a sprawling expanse of 14 acres (5.665 hector) was established in July 1980 .Initially it was started at David Hare Primary School .The foundation stone of the College was laid by the then Hon‘ble Chief Minister of West Bengal, Sri Jyoti Basu on 5th April,1981. Later on the College started functioning from its own premises on Mahatma Gandhi Road from 1982. In its initial stage the College taught seven Arts subjects for BA General Degree Course. Today, the College runs two streams, Arts and Science with 9 Honours and 12 General course subjects. There are more than fourteen hundred students studying in the institution headed by the Principal, 16 Full Time Teachers (four Assisitant/ Assi=ociate Professors and two Graduate Lab Instructors), one Librarian (also a teaching staff), seven Government Approved Part Time teachers, one Government approved Contractual Full Time teacher, 27 Management Appointed Guest Faculty and eighteen non-teaching employees (including management appointed temporary staff). 5 Durgapur Women’s College—Self Study Report The major sources of income of the College are UGC grants, State Government grants and fees received from the students. The resources are quite insufficient to meet all its needs, but the College is trying its best to keep pace with the ever changing world of higher education. Since its establishment in 1980, the College has tried ceaselessly to provide quality education to girl students living in and around the city of Durgapur. Durgapur, owing to its thriving industrial sector, is a densely populated city with a cosmopolitan and eclectic culture. The city-population comprises Indian nationals belonging to various linguistic, religious and ethnic communities and the College, as a result, has students from different socio-cultural backgrounds. Since the stated vision of the College is to empower women, the teaching, non-teaching and technical staff of the College try to impart holistic education to the students so that they are ready to face the world when they finally come out of the secure confines of the classrooms. Unlike many other Institutions of Higher Learning located in other urban centres of the state of West Bengal, Durgapur Women‘s College does not suffer from inadequacy of space. The sprawling fourteen acres campus has given the College a remarkable picturesque beauty and has kept alive the provision of future extension. Thus, we see the College as one with immense potential for betterment and diversification in future. Durgapur is aspiring to the status of a future-ready ―Smart City‖ and is well on its way to become one of the foremost urban centres in the country. Keeping this national perspective in mind, we are committed to provide our students with all those technical, technological and professional support that would make them at par with the students from other Universities and Colleges. Since its inception, the College was affiliated to the University of Burdwan. In the last couple of years, the College has experienced many significant changes which have resulted in a radical overhaul of its academic structure. At present the college is in a state of transition as regards its states of affiliation. Till 22nd June 2015, it was affiliated to the University of Burdwan (BU) but in 23June 2015, along with 12 other General Degree Colleges in the vicinity of the Duragpur-Asansol Industrial area, Durgapur Wome‘s College was also re-affiliated to the recently established (2012) State- sponsored Kazi Nazrul University, Asansol. Accordingly, in its transitional phase ,the current Third year students are following the syllabi and course-structure of the University of Burdwan (1+1+1 Annual system); the Second Year students are following the syllabi and the course-structure of Kazi Nazrul University (1+1+1 Annual System); and the First Year students are following the semester wise Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) introduced from the academic session of 2016-17. Administrative and academic difficulties arising 6 Durgapur Women’s College—Self Study Report from these significant changes notwithstanding, there has been a concomitant change in the academic ambience of the College. The Choice Based Credit System-- Kazi Nazrul University happens to be the first of its kind in the State of West Bengal to adopt the system—with its broader range of subject-options and flexibility of structure has infused a new vigour into the teaching community. Keeping in mind the more career-oriented thrust of the CBCS, the College has applied for the opening of new Honours and Programme courses in various subjects. As a women‘s College, the College community encounters certain problems unique to women learners in this country. Early marriage, early childbirth, health issues, domestic pressure are some of the circumstances that compel some students to leave their courses midway. We are committed to find ways of solving these problems through personal mentoring and periodical counselling of the students and their family members. The Institution is committed to present a sympathetic and humane face to its stakeholders so that its triple objectives, to educate, to empower and to enlighten young minds are achieved successfully. We know that much may be done by way of improving the infrastructural support and the teaching- learning outcomes of the College, and this attempt at having the College accredited by NAAC is definitely a step towards that direction. We hope that the accreditation process and its results would place us clearly in the Higher Education map of the country and would reveal our weaknesses and strengths from an impartial and disinterested perspective. Our continuous and sincere efforts are directed towards securing a future for the College which will be even more glorious than its past. The NAAC committee has prepared the Self Study Report with the active support of all staff in regular interactions with the Principal and the entire campus community. The report has been finalised with utmost sincerity, honesty and collective effort of the faculty members, which is now being submitted to the NAAC for assessment and accreditation. It would be great delight to hear from you soon on the Peer Team visit for the inspection of our College. 7 Durgapur Women’s College—Self Study Report SELF STUDY REPORT PART - A 8 Durgapur Women’s College—Self Study Report EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Durgapur Women‘s College being the first and sole women‘s Degree College in the locality has been playing a vital role in providing quality education to the girl students of this city and its vicinity since its establishment in 1980. The study was initiated to judge the quality of groundwater hot springs located in Bakreshwar and Tantaloi geothermal fields based on physicochemical parameters. The groundwater samples were gathered from seven distinct fields, equipped with geothermal wells. The collected water samples were analysed for total hardness, the total amount of dissolved solids, pH factor, and quantitative study of carbonates, bicarbonates, sulphates, nitrates, sodium, magnesium, calcium, potassium and chloride contents. Durov plot, Stiffs plot and various other diagrams were also adopted for investigating the suitability of groundwater use in an industry. Moreover, the results were correlated and compared with water quality standards based on Langelier Saturation Index (LSI), Ryznar Stability Index (RSI) and Aggressive Index (AI). The values and result thus obtained proposed highly – to – aggressively corrosive in nature and with a significant amount of scale formation. The assessment of the groundwater from Tantaloi and Bakreshwar does not demonstrate a permissible industrial water category. • Fly Ash of Thermal Power Plants
International Journal of Geology, Earth & Environmental Sciences ISSN: 2277-2081 (Online) An Open Access, Online International Journal Available at http://www.cibtech.org/jgee.htm 2015 Vol. 5 (2) May-August, pp. 74-91/Ghosh et al. Review Article FLY ASH OF THERMAL POWER PLANTS: REVIEW OF THE PROBLEMS AND MANAGEMENT OPTIONS WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO THE BAKRESHWAR THERMAL POWER PLANT, EASTERN INDIA Krishna Gopal Ghosh, Kaustuv Mukherjee and *Sunil Saha Department of Geography, Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan, West Bengal, India *Author for Correspondence ABSTRACT There is an enormous stress on the coal-based thermal power plants (TPPs) to meet the energy requirements of our country. Currently 82 coal-fired TPPs exist in India and disposal of the increasing amounts of coal ash is becoming a serious concern to the environmentalists as the re-use/utilization rate is too low and inadequate or unscientific management results multi-furious geo-environmental degradation. Fly ash disposal and management of Bakreshwar Thermal Power Plant (BkTPP), the 3rd largest TPP in West Bengal has become a major issue of concern. This is because; the fly ash dumping ponds at Panuria and Raipur village has got filled-up about a year ago. The slurry from these ponds directly flow into the surrounding land and to the river Chandrabhaga and Bakreshwar leading to air, water and soil pollution. Overflow and blow-off the ash towards residential areas is causing unnecessary human exposure and has serious health risks. The villagers are even more affected as the ash is deposited in the fields and farmers use ash-laden water to irrigate.

Almost a decade back it was precisely at this time of the year we were racing against time to prepare the first edition of the Self-Study Report amidst a plethora of surmise and conjecture, if not little bit of trepidation. The institution witnessed an unprecedented flurry of activities! Everyone, whatever be the nature of his/her relevance to the institution plunged into action for the NAAC Peer Team‘s visit. The ‗trophy moment‘ arrived in April the following year (i.e. 2007) with the institution finally being accredited by the NAAC! Sauntering down memory lane and reliving the past has a wonderful therapeutic effect both on the human being and on the institution. One‘s moments of recognition and achievements in the past inevitably embolden one to face the present and the future with courage and determination! In the fourth week of December 2015, just a whisker away from uploading the SSR for the Second Cycle of NAAC assessment, one is plagued with mixed emotions.
