Nielsen Sports Women’S Football 2019 with Supporting Social Media Insights from Introduction
NIELSEN SPORTS WOMEN’S FOOTBALL 2019 WITH SUPPORTING SOCIAL MEDIA INSIGHTS FROM INTRODUCTION By almost any measure, the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup is poised to be the biggest yet. France will host the eighth edition of the tournament across nine cities – Lyon, Grenoble, Le Havre, Montpellier, Nice, Paris, Reims, Rennes and Valenciennes. With prime-time coverage expected across Europe, viewership is set to be up on the last tournament. At the same time, genuine commercial momentum is building with FIFA partners and team sponsors, notably Adidas and Nike, launching the most ambitious activation programmes yet seen for a women’s football event. Women’s club football is also growing around the world, an important development which looks set to ensure there is less of a spike in interest in women’s football around major international events like the World Cup as the club game sustains interest in the periods between them. There have been record attendances over the last year in Mexico, Spain, Italy and England, with rising interest levels and unprecedented investment from sponsors, while at a regional level, in Europe, UEFA is this season hosting the Women’s Champions League final in a different city from the men’s event for the first time. This report, put together by Nielsen Sports and Leaders, offers a snapshot of the health of women’s football as the World Cup gets underway, examining current interest levels, the makeup of fans and what the future may bring as it increasingly professionalises. On the eve of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, we have also worked with Facebook to look at interest in the women’s game across its platforms. -

If you have any questions about ringette and SPRA, your division director and coordinators would be happy to answer them. HISTORY OF RINGETTE Ringette is a unique winter team sport developed in 1963, by the late Mr. Sam Jacks, Director of Parks & Recreation of North Bay, Ontario. Originally designed to be a unique winter team sport for girls and an alternative to hockey, ringette has evolved into a fast paced, exciting sport that combines the speed of hockey with the strategy of basketball or lacrosse. The first game played in Espanola, Ontario, was nothing like the sport of today. First introduced in Sherwood Park, Alberta in 1974. Sherwood Park was the first community in Alberta to introduce ringette and has since never looked back. Ringette is now considered an international sport with participating teams from Canada, Finland, Sweden, Germany, Czechoslovakia and the United States competing in the World Ringette Championships held every two year. -

From 29th June until 21st July, France once again lived in a bubble. And the whole world watched as Chris Froome won the stages to Ax 3 Domaines, Mont Ventoux and the individual time trial in Chorges, then defended his yellow jersey all the way to the finish in Paris. This year has already seen the British rider win two big stage races, the Tour de Romandie in Switzerland and the Critérium du Dau- phiné in France. His impressive athletic performance over the Tour’s 3,400 kilometre (2,110 mile) route in July saw him win his first Tour de France ahead of Colombia’s Nairo Alexander Quintana Rojas and Joaquin Rodriguez Oliver of Spain. To celebrate the 100th edition of the Tour de France, this year’s Grande Boucle started with three stages in Corsica – the first time the Tour has ever visited the Mediterranean island. In another bold step, the race didn’t start with its normal prologue this year. -

Building on the two prior CIES governance studies, this is the third FIFA-mandated research analysing governance relationships in football. This book focuses on those Editions CIES between football’s employers (clubs, leagues and even NAs) and its labour force. Based on a sample of forty countries across all six confederations and questionnaires from players’ associations, leagues and national associations, this research surveys and compares the diverse ‘management-labour’ approaches and scenarios in both men and women’s professional football worldwide. GOVERNANCE RELATIONSHIPS The authors place a special focus on players’ associations and highlight the variety of IN FOOTBALL BETWEEN structures found world-wide. The findings here contribute to a better understanding MANAGEMENT AND LABOUR of the systems, models and relationships in place around the globe when it comes to PLAYERS, CLUBS, LEAGUES & NATIONAL ASSOCIATIONS ‘management’ and ‘labour’. This book explores the representation of Kevin Tallec Marston, Camille Boillat & Fernando Roitman players within decision-making structures at club, league and national association level as well as the regulatory contexts and negotiation instruments linking players and management - such as collaborative agreements/MoUs, CBAs, minimum contract requirements and dispute resolution. In addition, this study provides a first ever global exploration of some of the inner workings of players’ associations and an overview of the key issues in professional football from the player’s perspective. The final chapter offers several models and frameworks illustrating the governance relationships between players and management. All three authors work at the International Centre for Sport Studies (CIES). Kevin Tallec Marston earned his PhD in history and works as research fellow and academic projects manager.
