Within South Africa’s borders there are Zulu, Xhosa, Pedi, Tswana, Ndebele, Khoisan, Hindu, Muslim, English and Afrikaans people, to name but a few. We may be different in some respects but we’re all united by the fact we call South Africa home andS contribute to its heritage, identity and culture. Why is heritage important? One of the main reasons is that it reminds us of who we are on a personal level and more generally of our South African culture and identity. Preserving your heritage is also an important nation- building tool and an exciting way of reaching out to young South Africans to encourage national pride. While we were planning this Heritage Issue, I was once again struck by the Cape Winelands’ rich history. Did you know for instance that 300-year-old Twee Jonge Gezellen is one of the oldest farms in the country and a national monument? And that Vergelegen hosted the first American president to visit South Africa? And that Blaauwklippen was owned by mining magnate and politician Cecil John Rhodes for one day? And did you know it was once said the test of a young man’s character is if he ordered a bottle of Meerlust Rubicon on a first date? We also have legends who’re no longer with us, living legends who through their work are making a change, and legends in the making. We pay tribute to our colleague, the late Professor Piet Goussard, we celebrate Professor Gerhard Pietersen whose mission is to fight the leafroll virus and we laugh with the likes of Bennie Howard, Dave Hughes, Duimpie Bayly, Sue Wardrop, Olga Hafner and Dave Johnson, stalwarts who serve the industry We walk back in to this day. We walk back in the footsteps of pioneering wine families and look at the history that shaped iconic wines and the footsteps of grape varieties. How can you not feel inspired by the story of a man who, as a pioneering wine token of his love for his wife, bought her a wine farm for Valentine’s Day? Or when you hear how the son of a wealthy freed slave of families and look West African decent carefully tended his vines and created a legendary brand? at the history that I hope the people and their stories we celebrate in this Heritage shaped iconic wines Issue will make you proud to be a South African. and grape varieties. Twitter @WineLandSA FOLLOW US ON Instagram @winelandmedia Facebook @winelandsa ERRATUM On page 30 of our article “Wines for Africa” (August 2019) we stated “South Africa exports more wine to Kenya than to China”. This is incorrect. China currently ranks 11th in volume exports and Kenya is 14th according to SAWIS packaged and bulk wine exports figures (June 2019). We apologise for the error. 4 SEPTEMBER 2019 IN MEMORIAM PROF PIET OFFICE: t: 021 276 0458 | f: 086 611 7877 e: [email protected] GOUSSARD Laborie et Picardi | Cecilia Street Suider Paarl 7646 PO Box 1411 | Suider Paarl 7624 EDITORIAL TEAM: Wanda Augustyn Carlin Daniels | Jana Loots Johannes Richter Anton Pretorius Die Suid-Afrikaanse wynbedryf neem afskeid van ’n groot VINPRO INDICATORS: Elriza Marcus gees in wingerdkundige kringe ná die afsterwe van prof WINETECH TECHNICAL: Jan Booysen Piet Goussard op 14 Julie.
