Within South Africa’s borders there are Zulu, Xhosa, Pedi, Tswana, Ndebele, Khoisan, Hindu, Muslim, English and Afrikaans people, to name but a few. We may be different in some respects but we’re all united by the fact we call South Africa home andS contribute to its heritage, identity and culture. Why is heritage important? One of the main reasons is that it reminds us of who we are on a personal level and more generally of our South African culture and identity. Preserving your heritage is also an important nation- building tool and an exciting way of reaching out to young South Africans to encourage national pride. While we were planning this Heritage Issue, I was once again struck by the Cape Winelands’ rich history. Did you know for instance that 300-year-old Twee Jonge Gezellen is one of the oldest farms in the country and a national monument? And that Vergelegen hosted the first American president to visit South Africa? And that Blaauwklippen was owned by mining magnate and politician Cecil John Rhodes for one day? And did you know it was once said the test of a young man’s character is if he ordered a bottle of Meerlust Rubicon on a first date? We also have legends who’re no longer with us, living legends who through their work are making a change, and legends in the making. We pay tribute to our colleague, the late Professor Piet Goussard, we celebrate Professor Gerhard Pietersen whose mission is to fight the leafroll virus and we laugh with the likes of Bennie Howard, Dave Hughes, Duimpie Bayly, Sue Wardrop, Olga Hafner and Dave Johnson, stalwarts who serve the industry We walk back in to this day. We walk back in the footsteps of pioneering wine families and look at the history that shaped iconic wines and the footsteps of grape varieties. How can you not feel inspired by the story of a man who, as a pioneering wine token of his love for his wife, bought her a wine farm for Valentine’s Day? Or when you hear how the son of a wealthy freed slave of families and look West African decent carefully tended his vines and created a legendary brand? at the history that I hope the people and their stories we celebrate in this Heritage shaped iconic wines Issue will make you proud to be a South African. and grape varieties. Until next month. Twitter @WineLandSA FOLLOW US ON Instagram @winelandmedia Facebook @winelandsa ERRATUM On page 30 of our article “Wines for Africa” (August 2019) we stated “South Africa exports more wine to Kenya than to China”. This is incorrect. China currently ranks 11th in volume exports and Kenya is 14th according to SAWIS packaged and bulk wine exports figures (June 2019). Flagstone Treaty Tree Cabernet / Malbec / Merlot 2017 Deep purple colour. On the nose summer fruits, cassis, fennel and the faintest hint of basil – all wrapped up in serious, warm, toasty oak. The palate is all about chunky, chewy, magically integrated tannin. This rewarding mouth-feel is complemented by concentrated flavours of youngberry, wild mint and blueberry. The wine pairs amazingly well with rack of Karoo lamb and pan-wilted garden fresh spinach. variety : Cabernet Sauvignon | 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Malbec, 30% Merlot winery : Accolade Wines winemaker : Gerhard Swart wine of origin : Western Cape analysis : alc : 14.71 % vol rs : 2.7 g/l pH : 3.4 ta : 6.0 g/l type : Red style : Dry body : Full wooded pack : Bottle size : 750ml closure : Screwcap ageing : 5 - 7 years At Flagstone we aim to make wine that respects our 350 year old wine-making heritage, while always celebrating the magnificence of nature. In 1509 this wind-sculptured Milkwood witnessed the massacre by local Khoi San of 64 of d’Almeidas infamous, battle-hardened Portuguese marines, who had foolishly abducted a Khoi San baby and attempted to take the infant back to their ships waiting in Table Bay. Development in the lowland areas has modifi ed the rivers, resulting in their poor ecological state. Signifi cant stretches of most rivers have been canalised, have poor water quality, modifi ed fl ows and abundant alien fi sh and plant life. The ecological functioning and delivery of goods and services by these rivers have been severely reduced. Many rivers require rehabilitation. Central Rivers Eastern Rivers GREATER CAPE TOWN’S RIVER CATCHMENTS Southern Rivers The Steenbras, Sir Lowry’s Pass, Lourens*, Eerste/Kuils, Sand, Zeekoe, Silvermine, Else, Schusters, Krom, Bokramspruit, Hout Bay*, Salt, Diep*, Sout, Buffels and Modder rivers are situated within the greater Cape Town area. These rivers rise in the mountain ranges of the Hottentots Holland Mountains in the east and Table Mountain and Cape Peninsula mountains in the south west. Urban development is the predominant land-use in the low-lying areas, with the Cape Flats being the most densely populated. Other major land-use activities are conservation in the south, irrigated agriculture to the east and dryland agriculture in the north. Small areas of natural vegetation are found throughout these catchments. The rivers in greater Cape Town have been divided into the following four management areas: Southern; Central; Eastern and Northern.
