With more than 1 600 entries for the 2017 competition, producers have once again put their faith in the judging process of the oldest and most prominent wine contest in South Africa, that started in 1991. This year saw 256 contenders with 71 Double Gold, 193 Gold, 654 Silver and 554 bronze awards. To taste wines at the Veritas competition, a recognised judging accreditation is essential. In addition, overseas judges must have international experience. The local team of judges consists of a variety of winemakers, researchers, academics, Cape Wine Masters, wine buyers, sommeliers, wine writers and consultants. Veritas strives to enhance the quality and professional execution of the judging to continue further growth for this reputable competition. While the inclusion of younger tasters, sommeliers and specialists with commercial background on the tasting panels will continue to receive attention, the expertise and experience of senior judges will be continuously harnessed. The annual inclusion of internationally respected and experienced tasters contributes to the favourable reputation of this wine competition. This year, six esteemed international judges joined forces with the highly- qualified Veritas group of more than 100 local judges. For South Africa, this is a wonderful opportunity to create ambassadors for our wines and thereby spread our wine message far and wide in their respective countries. Local and international wine and brandy buyers put a high premium on the Veritas results, as the stringent and unbiased judging standards by specialist panels produce trustworthy awards that act as a reliable barometer of quality. Veritas will continue to fulfil its role as a consumer-orientated wine competition, run by the industry for the industry. It is the only competition in South Africa where consumers can rely on being able to purchase the award-winning wines, as one of the conditions of entry is that a minimum of 300 bottles must be available for sale at the time of the results being announced. For Noble Late Harvest, Fortified wines, Cape Ruby/Tawny/ Vintage wines and Brandy the required quantities are less. VERITAS AWARDS 2017 5 The Veritas Board this year approved some important amendments to the competition rules. Five instead of seven judges now serve on each panel, while the 100-point tasting scale instead of the 20-point scale was used in evaluation, in line with international standards. The availability of only 50 cases (6x750 ml) of each winning wine is now required instead of 200 cases in the past, to accommodate smaller producers. By excluding any discussion on the panels, the results are a true reflection of the judges’ views. Veritas continues to strive to improve the competition to maintain the best possible standards. Consumers increasingly take note of the results and use the Veritas Awards as a yardstick when selecting wines for their enjoyment. A Double Gold, Gold, Silver and Bronze Veritas sticker on a bottle is indeed a great motivator to buy the country’s best wines. The SA National Wine Show Association (SANWSA) would like to thank the wineries and brandy cellars that entered the competition. We are grateful to the skilful judges who have freely offered their time and expertise to participate in the marathon judging of so many wines and brandies. We also salute the individuals who worked effortlessly behind the scenes and ensured that the 2017 Veritas competition ran smoothly and flawlessly. Finally, Veritas thanks our financial partners, Agri-Expo, Deloitte and SA Litho, for their continued and valued financial support which helps to uphold the proud Veritas tradition. Christo Pienaar Veritas Chairman 6 THE MEDALISTS THE MEDALISTS The Veritas Awards, South Africa’s premier wine and brandy competition, attracted 1 638 medal contenders this year. VERITAS VERTEX AWARD 7 THE ALL-NEW VERITAS VERTEX AWARD The Board of Veritas has decided to name one wine as the overall champion of the competition as from this year. This top accolade will be known as the Veritas Vertex Award. It takes its name from the Latin vertex, which means “highest point”. Vertex is sometimes also used to indicate the ‘top’ or ‘high point’ of something, such as the vertex of an isosceles triangle, which is the ‘top’ corner opposite its base – which fits perfectly into the Veritas Awards notion of

It shares the experiences of nine stone-fruit farmers in the Breede catchment, who took part in a water stewardship initiative in 2013 and 2014. It is envisioned that their journey will also help other farmers in the region identify ways to improve the use and management of water resources that are critical to sustaining their businessess. Flagstone Treaty Tree Cabernet / Malbec / Merlot 2017 Deep purple colour. On the nose summer fruits, cassis, fennel and the faintest hint of basil – all wrapped up in serious, warm, toasty oak. In 1509 this wind-sculptured Milkwood witnessed the massacre by local Khoi San of 64 of d’Almeidas infamous, battle-hardened Portuguese marines, who had foolishly abducted a Khoi San baby and attempted to take the infant back to their ships waiting in Table Bay. Then in 1806 a Peace Treaty was signed beneath its boughs after the British forces defeated the Batavian Republic at the Battle of Blaauwberg. in the cellar : Fermentation: 12 - 18 months in 90% American oak 10% French oak.

This wine is specifically crafted to be enjoyed as an accompaniment to food. Some of the wines we make, like Flagstone Noon Gun, are great for just watching the sun set on a Cape Town beach. The Flagstone "Treaty Tree Sauvignon Blanc & Semillon” Reserve, however, is crafted passionately with food in mind – We want the wine to make the food look good and add to the enjoyment of the whole dining experience.
