The Citizen's Almanac
M-76 (rev. 09/14) n 1876, to commemorate 100 years of independence from Great Britain, Archibald M. Willard presented his painting, Spirit of ‘76, Iat the U.S. Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, PA. The painting depicts three generations of Americans fighting for their new nation’s freedom, one of whom is marching along though slightly wounded in battle. Willard’s powerful portrayal of the strength and determination of the American people in the face of overwhelming odds inspired millions. The painting quickly became one of the most popular patriotic images in American history. Some touched directly on colonial interests in North America, others did not, but in the end the conflict would become global in scope, with battles fought on land and sea in Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America. France had been exploiting the resources of the rich North American interior since Jacques Cartier first charted the St. Lawrence River in the 1530s–40s, exploring and establishing trading alliances with Native Americans south along the Mississippi River to New Orleans, north to Hudson Bay, and as far west as the Rocky Mountains. The English, in the meantime, had been establishing settled colonies along the eastern sea- board from the present-day Canadian Maritime Provinces to Georgia; Florida remained in the hands of Spain. CHARLES WILLSON PEALE “Artist of the American Revolution” CHARLES WILLSON PEALE “ARTIST OF THE AMERICAN Revolution” Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827) was born in Queen Anne’s County, Maryland. By a chance encounter with artist John Singleton Copley, Peale became his student during the years 1768-1769. In 1770 he moved to London, England bearing a letter to Benjamin West, who kindly received him and accepted Peale as his student at the Royal Academy. In London, Peale studied modeling in wax, casting and molding in plaster, engraving in mezzotint, and miniature painting. In 1774, after studying with West, Peale returned to Annapolis and began painting portraits. In 1776, on the eve of American Independence, he established himself in Philadelphia. His estate, which is on the campus of La Salle University, can still be visited. Peale became one of the most important painters in the American colonies, and his services were much in demand. Among his portraits are many famous Americans such as George Washington, John Hancock, Benjamin Franklin, Robert Morris, Alexander Hamilton, and his friend, Thomas Jefferson. He commanded his own company of volunteers during the struggle for American independence, and shouldered a musket at the battles of Trenton and Germantown. Peale’s diary of day-to-day accounts as a militiaman in the Continental Army of George Washington is now found in the collection of the Smithsonian Institution. During the Revolutionary War, Peale began painting portrait miniatures of American patriots and soldiers, while in camp before and after battle. His most famous subject was George Washington, whom he first painted in 1772 while Washington was a Colonel in the Virginia militia.
