Merry Christmas and Happy New Year once again from the sunny Caribbean. A year ago, we had fully expected by now to be land-based in San Diego, working hard on our doctorates in Clinical Psychology. But not so. Family and friends convinced us to stay right here in the British Virgin Islands and earn our keep by chartering ANDANTE with us as crew. Must say, we were pretty easily convinced. So we bought a home on Maya Hill in Tortola looking east out over Maya Cove with ANDANTE at anchor, and on out to Drake's Passage and most of the other B.V.I. The view is spec tacular and ever changing as the angle of the sun shifts.

So let's back up a year. Last Christmas we were in Antigua and celebrated the New Year with Dana's brother Bruce and his lady Eva and tiny son Martin. They all came via Chicago from Sweden for some sunshine and warmth. A terrific reunion. Then Rochester sailing buddies Emily and Joe Sullivan joined us to cruise Antigua, Barbuda,-St. Barts and St. Martin. Good sailing, super fishing and great fun together.

The two of us explored St. Martin, Saba and Anguilla before crossing the Anegada Passage to the Virgins on what we still thought was the start of our return sail to the U.S. ANDANTE's designer/ builder, and our friend Rex Kaiser and wife Claire, joined us for several days of sailing and snorkel ling in the B.V.I. Great playful enthusiasm. We loved it. Ev's son Jack, wife Pat and kids Denise and Steven joined us for their spring vacation in March. Another outstanding visit, trying new anchor· ages and exploring backsides of islands: At the end of March, Rochester neighbors Carol and Allen Smith and Ginny and Bill Scully picked up a bareboat charter in Tortola, so we cruised in tandem with them for several days. We all had a great time switching crews between boats.

By now we were actively house-hunting on Tortola. Here the standard of living is comfortable, the political stability reasonable, the sailing about the best in the world, and the Tortolan a gentle, soft-spoken, honest soul. We were convinced. This would be home.

A summer trip to the States for visits with family and friends in Rochester and the Midwest was great fun. Sullivans hosted us in Rochester as we-visited with friends and neighbors whom we have sorely missed and who feted us royally. In Saugatuck we had a whirlwind week with Dana's kids Mark and Allyson, Giffords and a pair of Shermans. Later in Oxford, Ohio, we saw more Giffords. Our first trip back to the States in two years was very exciting for us. We were stunned by the pace, pleased by American efficiency, horrified at the waste and pollution, so glad to find the many tools and amenities unavailable here, and dizzied by the masses of people after two years with just the two of us aboard a small boat afloat on the open seas. Then a business trip to San Diego to sort, sell and ship the remainder of our belongings to Tortola. We were back in the islands by August.

Es's son David and his friend Marilyn flew down to cruise a bit and see our new abode. Good fun. Soon though, Hurricane "David" and a few days later, "Frederick," came roaring by. We stripped ANDANTE. of all sail and above-decks gear, set four anchors, and retired up the hill with our friends from EASTERLY to camp out in our empty but "built-on-rock" house. ANDANTE rode safely through both hurricanes as we four watched in awe the fury of wind and rain ...... and bailed the livingroom frequently! Furniture arrived in mid September and we moved onto the hill in October. Book cases and cupboards were built and gradually "Thomcroft" (named for the innumerable prickly trees and bushes in the garden) has begun to feel like home. We still aren't sure if "Thorncroft" or ANDANTE is home as we continue to split our time between them.

In November, our friend "Youdi" visited all the way from Palo Alto, CA., and we are thrilled that Audge and Steph Krest will come to sail and visit with us just before Christmas. We are fortunate to have made many wonderful new friends as we travel about. Our nomadic life has made us acutely aware of how dearly we value all of you, our dear friends, both new and old.

Our year was one of choices, decisions and a good bit of soul searching. No doors have been closed and an interesting new way of life has opened up. We hope all your lives have been as fill ed with joy, beauty and love as ours have.

Much love to you all, ( (:.7 /,' _J. L / ' •• 1•/' <:.J . / I' L P / kL -, Jan 19, 1980 LAKE SOLJNVTNGS Page 5

CHARTER CHATTER by Tom Barker It was just a year ago that the entire Barker family flew off to the British Virgin Islands for a week of warm weather sailing aboard a CSY yacht from Tortola . Probably the most harrowing part of the entire trip was the flight down from sub-zero Rochester to the Beef Island airport . There were three flights on the all day journey that got us in around dusk of the day before our charter began . With the fear that we would crash into the dock as we backed out from the slip, we went t o the orientation meeting and found t hat the boats were tied up stern-to and all we had to do was slip out slowly in forward. Wit h Anne at t he wheel, we made the graceful 34 ft boat glide out into Roadtown Harbour and with the sails up we flew across the Sir Francis Drake Channel, around Peter Island and into White Bay which was a good a nchorage for t he night with the unusual North winds. While we were anchored in 30 ft of water, the bottom seemed only inches away. The heavy anchor plowed in deeply and I could check it by swimming over and looking down into the clear deep water. We found the provisioning to be fantastic with enough "tea time" goodies to keep us happy for the entire c ruise. The steaks we broiled for supper were tender and went down well after a hard day of preparation and sailing. The morning broke bright and hot. Aft er b r eakfast we explored the island until we were to hot to move . After a swim from the boarding ladder, we pulled in the anchor (the hardest physical job of the cruise) and headed for Norman Island where we found dozens of boats at anchor. We explored the reef and t he caves off this island that inspired the book "Treasure Islandu. After Norman Island, we headed to Trellis Bay off Beef Island and stayed for two days hoping that the NorEaster would calm down so we could head in that direction for Virgin Gorda. The wind held a nd we set off to beat t he 20 to 25 miles to this most distant point in the BVI. By noon with reefed main and jib we were only about 1/3 of the way and decided that discretion was the bett er part of valor and headed back down the Channel, picked up some ice at CSY and headed to Litt le Harbour where we spend a calm and restful night. Since the anchorage on Norman Island had the best snorkeling and daughter Audrey took to it so well, we headed back to t his anchorage and spent t he last days doing what
