PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

  • What Is Gonzo? Hirst, UQ Eprint Edition 2004-01-19 Page: 1
What is gonzo? Hirst, UQ Eprint edition 2004-01-19 Page: 1 What is Gonzo? The etymology of an urban legend [word count: 6302] Dr Martin Hirst, School of Journalism & Communication, University of Queensland [email protected] Abstract: The delightfully enigmatic and poetic ‘gonzo’ has come a long way from its humble origins as a throw-away line in the introduction to an off-beat story about the classic American road trip of discovery. Fear and loathing in Las Vegas is definitely a classic of post-war literature and this small word has taken on a life of its own. A Google search on the Internet located over 597000 references to gonzo. Some had obvious links to Hunter S. Thompson’s particular brand of journalism, some were clearly derivative and others appear to bear no immediate connection. What, for example, is gonzo theology? Despite the widespread common usage of gonzo, there is no clear and definitive explanation of its linguistic origins. Dictionaries differ, though they do tend to favour Spanish or Italian roots without much evidence or explanation. On the other hand, biographical sources dealing with Thompson and new journalism also offer different and contradictory etymologies. This paper assesses the evidence for the various theories offered in the literature and comes close to forming a conclusion of its own. The paper then reviews the international spread of gonzo in a variety of areas of journalism, business, marketing and general weirdness by reviewing over 200 sites on the Internet and many other sources. Each of these manifestations is assessed against several gonzo criteria.

  • DEFENDER of the FAITH: the Life of J. Gresham Machen Part 2: the Battle for the Presbyterian Church
IIIM Magazine Online, Volume 3, Number 15, April 9 to April 15, 2001 DEFENDER OF THE FAITH: The Life of J. Gresham Machen Part 2: The Battle for the Presbyterian Church By Rev. Randy Oliver THE BATTLE FOR THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH “The author is convinced that liberalism on the one hand and the religion of the historic church on the other are not two varieties of the same religion, but two distinct religions proceeding from altogether separate roots.” – J. Gresham Machen On Sunday May 21, 1922, Henry Emerson Fosdick, supply pastor at First Presbyterian Church in New York City (although he was a Baptist), preached a sermon entitled “Shall the Fundamentalists Win?” The preaching of this now famous sermon “was the signal for a new and public outbreak of the conflict between the forces of historic Christianity and modern liberalism within the Presbyterian Church in the USA.”1 In the sermon, Fosdick pled for tolerance of differing views on the inspiration of Scriptures, the virgin birth, the atonement, and the Second Advent of Christ. It soon became clear that, despite his protestations to the contrary, Fosdick “advocated modernism as the religion for this day and generation.”2 Fosdick’s sermon reflected the growing influence of progressivism, ecumenism, and liberal theology in the Presbyterian Church. These tendencies caused the Presbyterian Church, in its General Assemblies of 1910 and 1916, to rule “that biblical inerrancy, the virgin birth, the substitutionary atonement, the resurrection, and miracles were essential doctrines.”3 The Presbytery of Philadelphia overtured the General Assembly to “take such action as will require the preaching and teaching in the First Presbyterian Church of New York City to conform to the 1 Rian, Edwin H, The Presbyterian Conflict (Philadelphia: The Committee of the Historian for the Orthodox Presbyterian Church, 1940, 1992), 17.
