Obligation

Community Scholars Program. Commencing with the acquisition by ESD or CU of all Initial Stage 1 Condemnation Parcels, and continuing for a 25-year period from commencement, CU shall offer independent, community-based scholars from Northern access to a range of services provided by CU and resources not usually afforded to non-affiliated residents. Services and resources shall be provided at no cost to participants and shall include access to all of CU’s libraries – including on-line access, course auditing privileges, dialogue with scholars in their field of study, and the ability to participate in seminars and social events developed specifically for the group of in buildings proposed within the Project Site. Selection shall be determined by an application process, reviewed by a committee of CU’s faculty and leaders from relevant local cultural institutions. Scholars shall be appointed for 3-year terms. In the first year CU shall appoint up to five scholars; in the second year CU shall appoint up to an additional five, so that after year one there shall be a plan to have a cohort of ten scholars. CU envisions the program to proceed as a pilot for ten years and then be re-evaluated in good faith to assess its effectiveness.

*Planning activities were still ongoing upon the obligation trigger date. Appointments to the Community Scholars program began in 2013, one year after the trigger date. Therefore, this obligation will be in effect until 2038, 25 years from the commencement of the obligation implementation, after an assessment in 2023.

The Office of Government and Community Affairs is currently accepting applications for the Columbia Community Scholars program beginning this Fall. Applications are due on April 25th, 2019. The program, one of the benefits associated with the Manhattanville Campus Expansion, offers independent, community-based scholars from Northern Manhattan access to a suite of Columbia University services and resources in order to work toward the completion of a particular project or to attain skill in a particular area. We hope you will share this announcement with people you think would make great candidates.

2019 Arise! SYEEP Applications Now Open - Deadline THIS FRIDAY - May 10! West Harlem Development Corporation (WHDC) is pleased to announce that applications are now available for the 2019 ARISE! Summer Youth Employment & Education Program (SYEEP). Arise! SYEEP will provide West Harlem youth (at least 14 years of age) with six (6) weeks of paid ($15/hour) summer employment that will include worksite responsibilities and academic enrichment. The program will include job readiness, NYS Regents/SAT/ACT prep, mentorship, weekly trips, and participation in community service activities.

Stakeholders were briefed on initial work conducted, with special emphasis on the success of the 2018 COSMOS Research Experience for Teachers (RET) program. Urban Assembly School for Performing Arts visits Columbia's Morningside Campus On April 11th 2019, the Connecting Youth Initiative (CYI) hosted a campus visit for students from the Urban Assembly School for Performing Arts. During the visit, the students engaged in a Q&A session with members of CU’s Black Students Organization and learned firsthand what life on a college campus is like for minority students. CYI is committed to partnering with local schools to expose their students to the world of educational opportunities available to them.

Saturday Science goes to Super Saturday STEM Expo on May 18th! For May's Saturday Science, The Zuckerman Institute will be joining the Super Saturday STEM Expo at the Harlem Armory! SUPER SATURDAY is an annual STEM expo. Designed for New York City youth and their families, the event features hands-on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) activities and demonstrations. This event is free and open to the public.

On Friday, March 29 in the Event Oval, Diana Center at Barnard College, 100 bikers rode and raised over $8,000 to support CCS grantmaking efforts. During the months of February and April, CCS collected over 340 bags of coats, clothing, toiletries, and accessories from the Columbia community for the Clothing Closet for the homeless and needy at Cathedral Community Cares.

At Harlem Ecosystems Summer Camp, students will explore how life exists and flourishes in an urban environment. This camp will be field work intensive with an emphasis on hands-on scientific exploration. Working side-by-side with Ph.D. scientists, students will collect and observe some of the diverse creatures living in the Hudson River. Additionally, students will monitor the pollinators in local gardens and discover their role in urban ecosystems. Lunch & snacks will be provided. Outdoor activities everyday. $800 fee per week. The Community Blood Drive in Manhattanville is open to all. This drive will be on April 30 from 11 AM to 5 PM. Walk-ins are welcome but advance registration is encouraged.

Dear Mama Coffee is situated in the southwest corner of the Jerome L. Greene Science Center’s ground floor, with an entrance opening into the Small Square, facing the Lenfest Center for the Arts. Initially, Dear Mama Coffee will be open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Hours will expand when the full kitchen installation is complete.

Amend the 13th - A discussion on a path to Criminal Justice Change On February 22nd, The Office of Government and Community Affairs held a panel discussion with experts to begin the conversation about this process for criminal justice change. The goal of the dialogue was to develop strategies that will increase public awareness, fuel public discourse, and build momentum to amend the 13th Amendment of the United States Constitution.

The event was a part of a larger effort made by some of the public facilities and programs residing in Columbia University’s new Manhattanville campus. Upon entering, attendees were greeted with a warm smile by Vivian Kurutz, Columbia Community Scholar and Executive Director and founder of the Harlem Wellness Center, who was to be leading the event that afternoon.
