Intel has been working in EFI/UEFI since mid 1990s, and there are vendors like HP or Apple that provided EFI machines since a long time ago. But it is when Microsoft announced Windows 8 that UEFI became the required way to boot the new certified machines. • Secure boot is an extension of UEFI. One of the key points of UEFI is that it can be extended. UEFI has an internal virtual machine that is independent of the architecture that it is using. The standard accepts special binary files compiled for this virtual machine (EFI binaries) that can be executed inside the environment. These binaries can be device drivers, applications or extensions to the UEFI standard. UEFI, in some sense, is like a small operative system that runs when the machine is powered on and whose main task is to find and load another operating system. Unified Extensible Firmware Interface Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) is meant as a replacement for the Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) firmware interface ● Initially (1998) designed by Intel for Itanium processor ● Since 2005 managed by the Unified EFI Forum (uefi.org) Source: http://loadays.org/archives/2013/static/slides/Integrating-UEFI-into-rear.pdf Why UEFI? • BIOS has its (aging) limitations – 16-bit processes – max. -

The Design and Implementation of a Novel Open Source Massive Deployment System

Received: 10 May 2018; Accepted: 8 June 2018; Published: 12 June 2018 Abstract: The hypervisor and container are emerging cloud computing and fog computing technologies, which enable rapid system deployment. However, both of the technologies depend on the operating system (OS) and applications that are installed on the host machines. System deployment is the activity to deliver and install OSs and applications onto computers. Such deployment activities are widely required in the infrastructure of cloud computing, fog computing, high-performance computing clusters, and classrooms of computer education. Albeit the concept of system deployment is not new, traditional solutions cannot support the rapid evolution of open source file systems. Furthermore, existing solutions cannot support the massive deployment of disks in a computer as well as the massive deployment in large-scale computers. To resolve the issue, the authors proposed novel system architecture as well as software that is openly available. -

University of Piraeus Department of Digital
UNIVERSITY OF PIRAEUS DEPARTMENT OF DIGITAL SYSTEMS Postgraduate Programme in SECURITY OF DIGITAL SYSTEMS Registration, classification and presentation of digital forensics and incident response tools Argyro Liakopoulou Supervising Professor: Konstantinos Lambrinoudakis December 2015 1 2 Abstract The objective of this thesis is to record, categorize and present the tools available, freely and commercially, for the needs of digital forensics and security incident response process. Initially, this study presents the structure of the security incident response team and, then, the procedures and techniques applicable for a successful response to a security incident. The same procedure is followed for the digital forensics team. Afterwards, the specific procedures, that should be followed for the collection and processing of electronic evidence in order to be valid for legal use, are analyzed. Then, an overview of the legal framework within the EU, surrounding the security incident response and digital forensics procedures, is presented. Next is presented the structure of the web page created containing the collection of forensics tools categorized according to their functionality. Finally, some tools for digital forensics and security incident response are presented and categorized according to their functionality. 3 4 Table of Contents ABSTRACT ............................................................................................................................................ 3 TABLE OF CONTENTS .....................................................................................................................
