Erzsébet Stróbl: The Device of the Savage Irish… Erzsébet Stróbl The Device of the Savage Irish: The Portrait of Captain Thomas Lee The portrait of Captain Thomas Lee by Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger (1594)1 is a striking image of an Elizabethan gentleman exhibiting long bare legs and feet and a hairy chest left visible through a half open shirt. Loosely dressed young men featured in the more intimate genre of miniature painting, but on such a scale (2305x1508 mm) it was unique, and explanations for this unusual representation point to a resemblance with the costume of the barefooted Irish soldier, the kerne. Lee, who from 1573 served for three decades in the queen’s campaign against Ireland,2 seems to allude with his dress to the wild foot soldiers of his place of service. An inscription on the left hand side in the tree provides a further possible layer of interpretation of this rare device. The line ‘Facere et pati Fortia’ (‘Both to act and to suffer with fortitude’) is from Livy History( of Rome 2:12) and was uttered by the Roman Caius Mucius Scaevola before thrusting his hand into fire to prove his loy- alty to his country after being captured in the enemy camp attempting to kill their king. Scaevola was dressed in disguise and his Etrurian dress may have inspired Lee’s Irish costume by referring to Lee’s loyalty to the crown amidst the wild rebel- lious Irish, or, as Einberg points out, Lee’s costume may also be simply a reference to ancient garments.3 TheTate Gallery Companion establishes a direct link between Lee’s career in Ireland and his Irish kerne costume by claiming that it is a direct appeal to the queen ‘de- signed to draw attention to his complaint of poverty’ as a soldier serving in Ireland.4 While savageness is indicated by the attire of Lee, certain other details – like the shirt decorated with embroidery and lace, the richly inlaid pistol, the spear and sword, the embossed helmet and shield – point to a refined courtly context, which prompted Morgan to state that the costume resembles a ‘stage-costume’ like one worn on tilts or masques.5 1 The portrait is at Tate Britain, catalogued T03028. 2 James P. The wild man of the Middle Ages survived in a courtly form in the sixteenth century where it became an expression of a mode of aristocratic courtliness representing a ‘stage prior to the achievement of perfect chivalry.’6 The wild man also became an emblem of courtly service in England where his unrestrained physical force was tamed through the presence of an awesome virgin monarch and his masculine en- ergy channelled into providing active military protection to a female queen. 6 Phillipa Berry: Of Chastity and Power. Erzsébet Stróbl: The Device of the Savage Irish… Thus, representing Thomas Lee as an Irish wild savage has more than one layer of signification: one that refers to savagery associated with Ireland by the English, one that hints at the career of Thomas Lee as a soldier in Ireland, but also a very important one – not yet analysed by scholars – that employs a courtly language in which the trope of the wild man symbolises the perfect service of Queen Elizabeth. The Irish Kerne and Irish Savagery The representation of Captain Thomas Lee on Gheeraerts’s canvas follows the con- ventional sixteenth century iconography of an Irish foot soldier, the kerne, the low- est degree of soldiers serving in an Irish army who travelled barefooted through the Irish bogs.

Overall a very good copy. $1,500 First edition. Hannah Adams (1755-1831) was the first woman in the United States to make her living as a writer. Born in Braintree, Massachusetts, Adams was a distant cousin of President John Adams and the daughter of a lifelong bibliophile called “Book” Adams, whose history included a failed attempt at bookselling. Too frail to go to school, she was taught Latin, Greek, geography and logic by theological students who boarded with her family. One of these students introduced her to Broughton’s Dictionary of Religions, which led to her interest in writing on religious topics. The present book, Adams’ first, was an important contribution to this literature, in that she represented denominations from the perspective of their adherents, without injecting her own opinions.

    chapter 4 Bentham, Mill, Grote, and An Analysis of the Influence of Natural Religion on the Temporal Happiness of Mankind Catherine Fuller † This paper investigates the production of An Analysis of the influence of natu- ral religion on the temporal happiness of mankind, first published in 1822 by George Grote, from Bentham’s manuscripts on the utility of religion. The paper undertakes a preliminary comparison between the manuscripts and the book. The basis of this comparison also includes Grote’s essay on Magic, the influ- ence of James Mill, and Bentham’s reaction to the book. It will be argued that Bentham and Grote had different agenda, and produced different texts, and that to regard Bentham as the author of An Analysis of the influence of natural religion is misleading.1 Denied the possibility of a university education by his father’s insistence that he worked in the family bank, George Grote sought all possibilities of edu- cation and debate through friendship, and in 1819 met James Mill.2 Grote soon came under Mill’s influence, and according to Harriet, Grote’s wife, “there was little difference in point of opinion between them.”3 Grote’s early essay on Magic, completed by Christmas 1820,4 was a thinly- disguised attack on religion. Mill recommended Grote and the essay to the editor of the Encyclopaedia Britannica, and recommended Grote to Bentham as an editor of his writings on the utility of religion.5 After two meetings at dinner with Grote in August and November 1821, Bentham sent four parcels 1 A version of this paper was given at the ISUS Conference held in San Francisco in September 2008.

It presented a philosophical analysis of the position of women in society, as unrecognised individuals both in public and domestic roles. Mill exposed the moral and ethical shortcomings' of a system which denied women legal status or moral equality, and he made a number of specific suggestions for reform, particularly respecting legal and educational rights for women. During the following sixty years in Britain, almost all of his suggested reforms were achieved. Because. Mill' s specific pleas were answered, the Subjection of Women has come to be regarded as an out-cf-date argument for conditions which have been corrected.

ABSTRACT This thesis investigates the strategic communication of mid-nineteenth century British feminism through the activism and networking of the Kensington Society (1850-1890). Collectively and individually, the sixty-eight members of Britain’s first female-only discussion society practised a range of intellectual communication strategies to reform the position of women in society. In combining literary historical and communication approaches, it also aims to readdress the intellectual heritage of the Kensington Society, asking why it was established, and how it was utilised to spark a wider discussion on women’s rights in mid-nineteenth century Britain. To do so, the thesis investigates the political and religious dissenting heritage of the sixty-eight members; their English Woman’s Journal; discussion through private letters and publications, and their involvement in founding Britain’s first women’s tertiary college, Girton College, Cambridge. Through a historicist examination of the communication of the Kensington Society, it specifically examines the pivotal role the Society played in the individual reforms of its members, and the wider women’s movement of Victorian England.

John Hoppus, who had served as Professor of Logic and Mental Philosophy at University College London since 1829, submitted his resignation. Few of his colleagues or students regretted the professor’s decision. Deadly dull, if knowledgeable and diligent, Hoppus “almost killed the study of philosophy in the College,” according to its historian.[1] Some senior members of the College’s governing Council especially welcomed the resignation. Quite apart from his dismal performance in the classroom, he was a clergyman, and his philosophical opinions were therefore suspect. University College had been founded as a refuge for those barred by their religious beliefs from attending Oxford or Cambridge.[2] In 1866, as in 1826, the year of the college’s founding, the primary mission of both universities remained the training of clergy for the Church of England. Dissenters could matriculate at Cambridge without subscribing to the Thirty-nine Articles, but until 1856 only Anglicans could receive scholarships and degrees (at which time 2 Oxford’s doors were also opened to Dissenters). Non-Christians and non-trinitarians were still excluded, and college fellows and university professors were obliged to subscribe. These restrictions
