Baobab tree a Barbadian wonder he Baobab tree (Adansonia digitata) connects Barbados to Africa. While it may be true much of African history was destroyed by the Tcolonisers, this piece of history lives on. In Queen’s Park and Warrens locations stand two magnificent specimens of the baobab tree also known as the “Tree of Life”. The tree is also known as Corn Tree, Monkey Tamarind, monkey-bread tree, upside-down tree, and cream of tartar tree. One can only imagine the need of the enslaved African to see a symbol of home and knowing the longevity of the tree, share this immense tree with future generations. Although some, like past Europeans have sought to deface the trunk with graffiti, it still grows and bears fruit.

A source of food In Africa, the baobab tree is beneficial in several ways. This tree with its large squat jug-shaped trunk is an adaptation for water storage in the dry savannah regions of its native Africa. The fruit of the tree is used to make “tabaldi” juice. It is made by soaking the dry pulp in water. The leaves are used to make relish and young fresh leaves are dried and powdered or cooked in a sauce. In northern Nigeria, the bark and root are used in traditional medicine and provide feed for livestock. Although a resilient species, it is believed that climate change and its effects are reducing the lifespan of the baobab tree.

It is estimated that the baobab tree in Queen’s Park is over a thousand years old while the other in Warrens is believed to be brought from ‘Guiney’/Guinea around 1738. Also, St. Croix celebrates the presence of the baobab tree and the story of the Africans who brought the seeds to the Caribbean. The island at one point had about one hundred trees, more baobabs than any other island in the region.

The island’s oldest living symbol of Africa

The Baobab tree in Warrens is one of two large ancient trees on the island and is believed to be brought from ‘Guiney’/Guinea around 1738. The “Tree of Life” is one of the unique African living symbols still existing on the island today. The Barbados Advocate Sunday November 22, 2020 •23
