SARA BAUER ACADEMY with Brock Junior Badgers

2016-2017 FLEET Development and High Performance Midget AA Program - Program Summary -

SARA BAUER ACADEMY Creating, revealing, and facilitating the pathway to fullest potential Diligence ~ Passion ~ Tenacity What is the Brock Jr. Badgers FLEET?

The Brock Jr. Badgers (BJB) FLEET is the premier team of the St. Catharines Female Hockey Association’s Brock Jr. Badgers rep program. It is a high performance development-based team training under the instruction of Sara Bauer Academy founder Sara Bauer, and it brings together elite female hockey players in a program geared specifically towards learning, total person and total athlete growth, and long-term high performance outcomes.

The ultimate goals of the program are to “produce” confident, respectful, and highly- functioning student-athletes who love the game, who strive for excellence in all that they do, and who are also humble, honest, and benevolent young adults equipped with all of the tools needed to make a positive impact in the world outside of sport.

The program is structured in such a way as to create an environment that facilitates these goals inside of an elite hockey curriculum. This includes:

• a practice and game program that permits focus on skill and tactic development, where all players are afforded the opportunity to: o refine current skills and break inhibitive habits o establish new skills o perform skills at higher speeds and with greater opposition, akin to conditions at more elite levels of play o execute new skills in games without the pressure-laden “consequences” of making a mistake (games are used as an opportunity to transfer skills rather than to simply win by any means necessary; this allows players to establish authentic confidence with newly-acquired skill sets) o develop high performance game habits, including the ability to come through in critical situations (e.g. protect a one goal lead; on the power play late in a close game) o learn ways to be the best players they can be based on their own particular skill sets and assets (i.e. individualized development) o analyze and understand their habits through the use of learning assignments and during consultations with Sara o learn to identify opponents’ game strategies – both prior to and during games – and build counteractive strategies to create tactical advantage

• participation in the Lower Lakes Female Hockey League, providing opportunities for competition on a regular basis, as well as platforms for players to learn ways to plan specifically for certain teams’ tendencies.

• participation in showcase-style tournaments, providing opportunities for next-level exposure and for performing in short-term competition scenarios

• off-ice training that directly translates to higher on-ice performance

2 2015-2016 BJB FLEET

• education and assistance in learning and developing strong nutritional habits, including pre-game nutrition and recovery, an important but often overlooked part of athletics

• a strong focus on education, helping players master strong academic and organizational skills in developing post-secondary preparedness

• visits to American and/or Canadian universities to provide opportunities to learn about the post-secondary student-athlete experience

• player logging that includes notes on their “mentor players” (national level or professional players who they may pattern their games after), personal skill development and growth planning and tracking (including use of a video analytics system), off-ice training notes, and nutrition

• charitable events to serve as good role models and to make an important contribution to the community

• team building activities that teach players the value and rewards of being part of a group committed to the same goals, while also encouraging appreciation of each team member’s skill set and personal attributes

A player profile document is also created for each player. This is uploaded to the FLEET website, providing university scouts with easily accessible player information.

The Fleet will serve as a committed partner with other Brock Jr. Badgers teams, helping to cultivate relationships and to inspire all of the association’s young players to aspire to this type of excellence. Specific ways the FLEET will be involved with the younger Jr. Badgers include:

• attendance at FLEET on- and off-ice training sessions by Bantam AA and Midget A Jr. Badgers • opportunities for these affiliated players to play in games with the FLEET • Jr. Badger player/skill development, including running practices, directed by Sara • attendance at Jr. Badger practices by FLEET team members, who will serve as positive role models for younger players

Biography

Born and raised in St. Catharines, Ontario, Sara grew up playing AA and AAA boys’ hockey for St. Catharines Minor Hockey Association from minor novice through major midget. When she first made the AAA team as an 8-year-old, she became the first girl in the city’s history to do so. She later attended St. Francis Catholic Secondary School from 1998-2003. As an all-around athlete, Sara competed in basketball, volleyball, hockey, soccer, baseball, track and field, and tennis. At her graduation in 2002, she was named St. Francis’s Female Athlete of the Year and the Rotary Award Medalist, an honour bestowed upon the individual who most exemplifies the philosophy, “putting service above self”.

Sara received a full athletic scholarship to the University of Wisconsin, a top-tier Division I school known as an “Ivy of the West”. She attended UW from 2003 until 2008, playing hockey for “Miracle on Ice” hero Mark Johnson and with future Canadian and U.S. National Team members Carla MacLeod, Meaghan Mikkelson, Bobbi-Jo Slusar, , , Jinelle Zaugg, , and Erika Lawler. In her freshman year, Sara led the team in points and was named team Rookie of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year. She was also named WCHA Rookie of the Year and she was elected to the All-WCHA Rookie Team and All-WCHA Second Team. She went on to raise her point total in each of her next three seasons, serving as assistant captain her junior and senior years and leading the team to back-to-back NCAA Frozen Four national championships – the program’s firsts – in each of those two years. Along the way, she received numerous awards and accolades, including First Team All-America, USCHO and WCHA Player of the Year, and Frozen Four Most Valuable Player honours. Most notably, she was the 2006 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award winner as the most outstanding player in women’s college hockey; she was also a top-three finalist for the award in 2007. When her playing career at Wisconsin finished, she held 17 team records. Sara graduated with honours with a degree in Kinesiology.

Sara was a part of the Canadian National Team program between 2004 and 2008. She was a member of the Under-22 Team in 2005-2006, playing against the Senior National Team during a camp in August 2005, and helping the team capture the Air Canada Cup in Germany in January 2006.

In the summer of 2009, Sara developed Sara Bauer Hockey School, teaching hockey skills and tactics to girls aged 9-14. Instructors at the camp included former NHL goaltender and current head goaltending

4 2015-2016 BJB FLEET scout for NHL Central Scouting Al Jensen, and former Junior B Falcons Billy Buckle, Ben Boudreau (son of Anaheim Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau), and Riley Sheahan, who is a currently a rising young star with the Detroit Red Wings.

From 2009-2011, Sara was a graduate student at Niagara University, where she completed the Master of Education program. She is certified to teach General Science and Chemistry for grades 7-12 in Ontario and grades 5-12 in New York State.

Goalies

BJB FLEET goalies are included in all aspects of the program – including video analysis, academic and nutritional support, and post-secondary preparation – but they will receive position-specific training wherever necessary (for example, off-ice training will be tailored to the movement patterns and required fitness elements that characterize success at the goaltending position). In addition, they will receive consistent instruction from goaltending coach Ryan Ludzik, who will attend practices on a regular basis, and who will oversee video analysis and feedback for goalies.

Ryan Ludzik

One of the brightest young minds and charismatic individuals among elite instructors, Ryan is the goaltending coach for the Niagara Ice Dogs. He also operates Ryan Ludzik Goaltending, working with minor hockey and junior-level goalies from all over the region. Ryan enjoyed a successful junior career before committing fully to the teaching side of the game. He spent two years with the Erie Otters of the OHL before returning to the Niagara Falls Canucks in 2007, when he was named league MVP. Ryan earned game experience with four different AHL teams, and then finished his career with the Tulsa Oilers of the CHL. Ryan’s intelligent approach, enthusiasm, and rapport combine to provide a great learning experience for all goalies, and are true assets to the Brock Jr. Badgers FLEET Midget AA program.
