Lots of birdlife and big trees, occasional mountain bikers and thunderstorms, the odd bit of windfall and a cave made for an interesting and varied trip. Sales Table run by Graeme Lythgoe. Bring your cash and your saleable items. 13 March : Rob Merrifield – The Kaikoura Job. Rob. Merrifield is a retired civil engineer who has followed the Kaikoura Coast transport corridor reconstruction since the 2016 earthquake with a knowledgeable eye. He has published a book "The Kaikoura Job" that includes personal stories of being in the shake, a geologist's account of the earthquake and its effects, the work of organising and carrying out the rebuild, plus an account of re-opening the railway. There is an explanation of why it and State Highway 1 are located along this difficult coast and a brief account of building this sea level mountain railway, a task that took 75 years, 1870-1945. Rob will give an illustrated address that outlines what he has covered in his book and talk about the challenges and how they were overcome. 20th March : Ray Hyndman – Japan with Gadventures & National Geographic Touring the Land of the Rising Sun proved to be much more interesting than expected. We thought we would be shown Japan as the country that developed after WW2 but found strong connections to their history and heritage which delighted and enlightened us to their deep seated culture. We also got a glimpse as to why Japan is so different from most other Asian countries in their approach to discipline and order. 27th March : Marcus Thomas – Exploring New Zealand’s subterranean wilderness Though nearly every corner of the country has been explored and mapped, exploration beneath our land is still in its infancy. Cave explorer Marcus Thomas will talk about the journey into New Zealand’s longest and deepest caves, through one of the world’s most dangerous cave dives and what it’s like to spend a week underground exploring at a time in some of the most remotes places in New Zealand. 3 April : Jeanette Rybinski – Two Sides of the Story An insight into a SAR callout and what happens at home and in the background when a callout happens. What the police want to know from you and how to help yourself when you are the one in trouble. The conservation and wise management of New Zealand’s natural wild lands, mountains, lakes, rivers and coasts and the promotion of sound management of recreation and sport connected with those places in the interests of those actively involved in such recreation and sport and the public generally and to take such action joint or otherwise as may be necessary to carry out these objects and to maintain in perpetuity the quality of the environment necessarily implied by the objects,” FMC has delivered to us several copies of recently reviewed and updated documents: FMC Strategic Plan 2018-21 – which sets out all the activities that it will be engaged in over the next few years, listing 44 actions it will undertake in pursuit of its objects. FMC Current Policies – setting out its stance on many issues and the outcomes it will be advocating for. Also available is a message from the FMC Mountain and Forest Trust – a charitable trust established in 1987 to promote: access for all to the mountains and forests of New Zealand; publications, conferences and research activity relating to the mountains and forests of New Zealand; expeditions by young people in the mountains and forests of New Zealand; the wise management for recreation in the mountains and forests of New Zealand. The Trust seeks donations from all who support these objectives. You can pick up donation envelopes, also at the Clubrooms or go online to fmc.org.nz/fmc-trust . Copies of these documents are available for you at the Clubrooms – please pick them up if you are interested in FMC’s advocacy and activity on our behalf! or contact me if you would like any of this sent on to you. 4 BJFM/H&V/Vol72/No2 Papatahi Hut The Department of Conservation has advised us that it will extend the present Memorandum of Understanding it has with us for Papatahi Hut, probably for 10 years. The MOU grants HVTC access to the hut for 8 nights/year, without charge. Club Centenary – 2023 Although this seems far away, the General Committee intends to hold a discussion at a Club meeting in the next few months to encourage all Club members to suggest ideas/ways in which our Club could celebrate this milestone. There is no concensus amongst the Committee, and we don’t expect it amongst members either, but we want to canvass ideas and activities in celebration that Clubmembers will enjoy and contribute toward. Put your thinking caps on now! Bequest from Gilbert Natusch Gilbert Natusch and Sheila Traill met at the Hutt Valley Tramping Club in about 1950, married, were very active trampers and skiers, and remained members of the Club throughout their lives. The Club has received a substantial bequest from Gilbert’s estate. The Treasurer will safeguard this and the General Committee will make a recommendation about its use that Clubmembers will be able to consider, probably at the AGM. It will be important to take into account Gilbert’s expressed wish that half of the bequest should be applied for search and rescue and for assistance in the rehabilitation of injured Clubmembers. Ladies Cloakroom: During the Christmas break, Doc Watson and Doreen Courtenay expended many hours and much energy to completely strip and re-decorate the Ladies Cloakroom. Please admire their work and thank them! General Committee: After 2 years in the role, Phaedra Upton will step aside as President at the end of the current year; and Nick McBride, after 3 years as Trip Co-ordinator, will relinquish that post. These are substantial and essential roles in our Club. Other positions within the General Committee may also be vacant – for example, Phaedra has had the support of only Russell Oliver, as Vice-President (Ruapehu), through 2 years. Please begin now to consider contributing to the management of our Club, from which we each draw a great deal of activity and enjoyment.
