Resumen En esta tesis se analiza cómo las “prácticas estéticas”, realizadas por parte de un sector de jóvenes inmigrantes o hijos de inmigrantes de diferentes pueblos mixtecos y zapotecos del estado de Oaxaca, México, generan posicionamientos que dan cuenta de configuraciones ideológicas y políticas que inciden en procesos relacionados con la representatividad de las organizaciones y los espacios artísticos en los que éstos participan, así como en las identidades culturales y juveniles vividas por ellos, en el espacio denominado Oaxacalifornia. Al ser estos jóvenes considerados como “étnicos”, aquí se propone desarticular el binomio “juventud étnica” para dar paso a un análisis que haga énfasis en el hecho de que ambas categorías al ser heterodenominaciones y heterorepresentaciones precisan que desde la autodenominación y la autorepresentación se dialogue con ellas para ser aceptadas o rechazadas. De modo que ha de realizarse el análisis contextual para identificar desde dónde se anuncian tales categorías para comprender los devenires situacionales de los jóvenes. Las “prácticas estéticas” pueden ir de la expresión pictórica a la musical, la producción poética, audiovisual, el activismo político, el uso del cuerpo como expresión y la gestión cultural, y se observan hipotéticamente como formas a través de las cuales los jóvenes ensayan diferentes maneras de identificación, representación y acción social, además de que a través de ellas cuestionan los marcadores étnicos y la etiqueta que los encasilla como parte de una minoría, asociada a un sector de población migrante situado, principalmente, en California, Estados Unidos. Abstract This thesis analyzes how the "aesthetic practices", carried out by a sector of young immigrants or children of immigrants from different Mixtec and Zapotec peoples of the state of Oaxaca, Mexico, generate positions that account for ideological and political configurations that affect in processes related to the representativeness of the organizations and the artistic spaces in which they participate, as well as in the cultural and juvenile identities lived by them, in the space called Oaxacalifornia. Being these young people considered as "ethnic", here it is proposed to dismantle the binomial "ethnic youth" to make way for an analysis that emphasizes the fact that both categories being hetero-nominations and heterorepresentations require that self-nomination and self- representation dialogue with them to be accepted or rejected. Thus, contextual analysis must be carried out to identify from where such categories are announced in order to understand the situational becomings of young people. The "aesthetic practices" can go from pictorial to musical expression, poetic, audiovisual production, political activism, the use of the body as an expression and cultural management, and are hypothetically observed as ways in which young people rehearse different ways of identification, representation and social action, in addition to questioning ethnic markers and labeling them as part of a minority, associated with a sector of migrant population located mainly in California, United States.     Aztec Culture Education Committee Ideas Report Draft August 2018 ORIGINAL CHARGE/FRAMEWORK A committee of cross campus partners including faculty, staff and students was formed at the end of the 2016- 2017 academic year to work on and develop a comprehensive Aztec culture educational plan. As a result of the committee meetings, a number of proposed initiatives were identified. The charge of the group and the basis of the conversations have revolved around fulfilling prior commitments made by the campus, as an example: Associated Students Referendum Spring 2008, passed Implementation of an Aztec Culture Project. The Project will include three elements intended to promote historically accurate portrayals of the Aztec Culture: new botanical gardens around the campus that include indigenous plantings from areas where the Aztecs thrived, a glass-mosaic mural that depicts historically accurate images portraying the origins of the Aztec Culture, and educational programs about the Aztec Culture that would be offered to all new SDSU students As the committee incorporated the recognition of the University’s relationship to local Indian groups as well as other indigenous groups from Mexico that comprise the larger University community. To begin prioritizing ideas and potential campus efforts, the following framework has been created from the current committee’s discussions, to categorize the overarching topical areas and objectives identified to date: San Diego State University will enrich the environment and deepen campus learning, both inside and outside the classroom, by enhancing Aztec Culture Education knowledge and understanding by strategically: • Expanding opportunities for scholarship regarding Aztec Culture, as well as local indigenous and Native American groups, through innovative courses, experiences, and engagement.

Reviewed by María Angela Díaz ccording to historian Catherine S. Ramírez, women are conspicuously ab- sent from the story of the World War II era, the zoot suit, and the creation Aof Chicano cultural nationalism. In The Woman in the Zoot Suit: Gender, Nationalism, and the Cultural Politics of Memory, Ramírez admirably sets out to correct this problem through her discussion of pachucas and their involvement in zoot-suit culture as well as the 1942 Sleepy Lagoon case and the Zoot-Suit Riots. While recent studies such as Luis Alvarez’s The Power of the Zoot: Youth Culture and Resistance During World War II address the suit’s importance to Mexican Americans and other ethnic and racial groups, Ramírez creatively links the zoot-suit culture of the 1940s with the Chicana/o artists of later de- cades to reveal how these artists redefined the pachuco and the zoot suit, mak- ing both icons of Chicano/a culture. She demonstrates that women were not simply hangers-on, but were integral to the formation of this culture, and that Chicana feminists used the memory of the pachuca in poetry and art to create their own version of Chicano/a nationalism that did not cast them as strange or beyond the scope of proper Chicano/a gender roles. The first of the book’s two sections focuses on the World War II era and American nationalism, while the second emphasizes the movement-era develop- ment of Chicano/a nationalism.
