PORTSIDE CLUB BULLETIN President’s Message – February 2020 Today is the fiesta of Catmon, Cebu and Dalaguete, Cebu. Also, today in 1888, Birth in Compostela, Cebu, of Escolastico Morre (1888-1921), known as “Errone”, editor and writer. Lastly, today in 1899, The officials of the Philippine Republic in Cebu meet to discuss preparations for the impending war against the Americans. The meeting is called by Luis Flores. Juan Climaco is placed in charge of the war preparations. Welcome everyone to our Fellowship Meeting tonight! First and foremost, my appreciation to PP Marcy Koike for the generous assistance and full support in accommodating our Japanese visitors/guests, our sister club, RC Oita Minami. プッシーロェフ会議! そこうよへ I hope everyone is on red shirt since this is our Pre-Valentine’s Day celebration. Let’s enjoy ourselves and welcoming our Japanese visitors/guests at the same time. Stay put until our fellowship time as we will likewise acknowledge our Birthday and Anniversary celebrators! Water Drilling Project visitations RC Oita Minami, through the guidance of PP Marcy Koike has scheduled a simple visit to our Water Drilling Project sites at Tejero Elementary School (Cebu City), Lawaan Elementary School (Talisay City) and Naga Central Elementary School (Naga City Cebu). Let us here some more updates on this tonight. Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) As previously mentioned in our last Portside Bulletin issue, we need to be updated as Rotarian and share correct information to our colleagues and countrymen. World Health Organization (W.H.O.) update as of 8 February 2020, there no new countries reported cases of 2019-nCoV in the past 24 hours. Situation in numbers: total and new cases in last 24 hours. Globally there are already 34,886 confirmed (3,419 new). China – 34,598 confirmed (3,401 new), 723 deaths (86 new). Outside of China – 288 confirmed (18 new), 24 countries, 1 death. Countries, territories or areas with reported confirmed cases of 2019-nCov, as of 8 February 2020 is found at the bottom of this article/message. W.H.O. RECOMMENDATIONS AND ADVICE FOR THE PUBLIC: During previous outbreaks due to other coronavirus (Middle-East Respiratory Syndrome PORTSIDE CLUB BULLETIN (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), human-to-human transmission occurred through droplets, contact and fomites, suggesting that the transmission mode of the 2019-nCoV can be similar. The basic principles to reduce the general risk of transmission of acute respiratory infections include the following: • Avoiding close contact with people suffering from acute respiratory infections. • Frequent hand-washing, especially after direct contact with ill people or their environment. • Avoiding unprotected contact with farm or wild animals. • People with symptoms of acute respiratory infection should practice cough etiquette (maintain distance, cover coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues or clothing, and wash hands). • Within health care facilities, enhance standard infection prevention and control practices in hospitals, especially in emergency departments. District Conference 2020 Another reminder for our incoming District Conference (DisCon) 2020, which is already fast-approaching. Our 2020 DisCon is held this coming March 5 – 7, 2020 (Thur to Sat) at Cebu Grand Convention Center, Banilad, Cebu City. Since the “promo” low DisCon cost already ended last January 31, 2020, registration is now back to its regular rate at Php6,000.00. You may deposit your payment to BPI Account No. 9121-0074-84 (Robinsons Galleria), RC CEBU WEST ROTARIANS INC. Once done, please write your name on the deposit slip and send it to our Club Secretary (Jensen), Club Treasurer (John) or our Club Clerk (Sharich). As already mentioned from our last Portside Bulletin issues, our Club is given the responsibility to host the Golf and Bowling tournaments on March 4, 2020 (a day before the actual DisCon day). For the Golf Tournament (“Paul Harris Cup”), IPP Rodien already finalized the venue at Cebu Country Club and registration is set at Php4,000 per player (cost inclusive of shared cart, green fees, giveaways, dinner and raffles). There is a prize for Hole-In-One sponsored by Phil. Span Asia Carrier Corp. For the Bowling Tournament (same day of the Golf Tournament), since there are only two teams competing each other – the Visayas and Mindanao, each team will be composed of ten (10) players. The tournament will be held at SM Cebu, at 6:00 PM. Tentative registration cost is Php1,000 per player. Winner is based on the total highest score for a team. So, this is a showdown between Visayas against Mindanao Rotarian bowlers. The Bowling Committee (c/o PP Sam Tiu and PP Rey Sabay) will give more updates within the week especially the guidelines and mechanics of the tournament. PORTSIDE CLUB BULLETIN Meeting Make-Up Club members who are unable to attend regular Rotary meeting, please note of a ‘millennial’ way of having Make-up, which already tested by some of us - doing it online thru Rotary E-Club of the West –website address at: https://www.rotaryeclubwest.org/make-up/. In doing “Make-Up” online, it is just as simple as browsing 30 minutes or more; 1.) view, read or watch some materials (the content of your choice provided by the e-Club website); 2.) complete & fill-out the “Make Up” Submission Form; and 3.) received an email confirmation within seconds which you can forward to our Club Secretary. By doing this, you can greatly help increasing our Club’s attendance percentage that will be reported monthly to our District.
