Its environmental impacts are often compared to traditional mobility solutions based on gasoline or diesel engines. The comparison pertains mostly to the single life cycle of a battery. The impact of multiple life cycles remains an important, and yet unanswered, question. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate advances of 2nd life applications for lithium ion batteries from electric vehicles based on their energy demand. Therefore, it highlights the limitations of a conventional life cycle analysis (LCA) and presents a supplementary method of analysis by providing the design and results of a meta study on the environmental impact of lithium ion batteries. The study focuses on energy demand, and investigates its total impact for different cases considering 2nd life applications such as (C1) material recycling, (C2) repurposing and (C3) reuse. Required reprocessing methods such as remanufacturing of batteries lie at the basis of these 2nd life applications. Batteries are used in their 2nd lives for stationary energy storage (C2, repurpose) and electric vehicles (C3, Citation: Wewer, A.; Bilge, P.; reuse). The hybrid energy storage system (HESS) uses two isolated soft-switching symmetrical half-bridge bidirectional converters connected to the battery and supercapacitor (SC) as a composite structure of the protection structure. The bidirectional converter can precisely control the charge and discharge of the SC and battery. Spiral wound SCs with mesoporous carbon electrodes are used as the energy storage units of EVs. Under the 1050 operating conditions of the EV driving cycle, the SC acts as a “peak load transfer” with a charge and discharge current of 2isc~3ibat. An improved energy allocation strategy under state of charge (SOC) control is proposed, that enables SC to charge and discharge with a peak current of approximately 4ibat. Compared with the pure battery mode, the acceleration performance of the EV is improved by approximately 50%, and the energy loss is reduced by approximately 69%. This strategy accommodates different types of load curves, and helps improve the energy utilization rate and reduce the battery aging effect.

    Electric Vehicle Batteries The electric vehicle battery pack performs the same function as the gasoline tank in a conventional vehicle: it stores the energy needed to operate the vehicle. Battery packs usually contain 10 to 52 individual 6-, 8-, or 12-volt batteries similar to the starter battery used in gasoline vehicles. While a gasoline tank can store the energy to drive 300 to 500 miles before refilling, the current generation of batteries will only store enough energy to drive 50 to 150 miles between recharging. Just as the amount of gasoline can be increased by installing a larger gas tank, the amount of stored electrical energy can also be increased by increasing the number and/or size of batteries in the battery pack. However, when batteries are added, the weight is increased and the spaced used by the battery pack increases. Because of this weight and space penalty, there is a limit to the number of batteries that can be used for any given vehicle. To increase the range and improve the performance of electric vehicles, batteries are being developed that can store larger amounts of energy with the same weight and volume.

    IMPLEMENTATION AND IN-DEPTH ANALYSES OF A BATTERY-SUPERCAPACITOR POWERED ELECTRIC VEHICLE (E-KANCIL) Manoj Embrandiri Thesis submitted to the University of Nottingham for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy December 2013 i ABSTRACT This thesis contributes to the research issue pertaining to the management of multiple energy sources on-board a pure electric vehicle; particularly the energy dense traction battery and the power dense supercapacitor or ultracapacitor. This is achieved by analysing real world drive data on the interaction between lead acid battery pack and supercapacitor module connected in parallel while trying to fulfil the load demands of the vehicle. The initial findings and performance of a prototype electric vehicle conversion of a famous Malaysian city car; the perodual kancil, is presented in this thesis. The 660 cc compact city car engine was replaced with a brushless DC motor rated at 8KW continuous and 20KW peak. The battery pack consists of eight T105 Trojan 6V, 225 Ah deep cycle lead acid battery which builds up a voltage of 48V. In addition to this, a supercapacitor module (165F, 48V) is connected in parallel using high power contactors in order to investigate the increase in performance criteria such as acceleration, range, battery life etc. which have been proven in various literatures via simulation studies. A data acquisition system is setup in order to collect real world driving data from the electric vehicle on the fly along a fixed route. Analysis of collected driving data is done using MATLAB software and comparison of performance of the electric vehicle with and without supercapacitor module is made.
