11 Supporting Those in Grief Here at St. Francis, there are many ways that we offer comfort to those who grieve. When we celebrate a funeral liturgy, some of those who provide support are “front and center”, while others are “behind the scenes”. We are currently seeking volunteers to share their gifts with us in one of our behind-the- scenes ministries, as Columbarium Attendants. These volunteers prepare our columbarium niches to receive cremated remains after a funeral liturgy. Preparation includes setting out the supplies needed for the inurnment service, opening and cleaning the niche, respectfully standing guard while the niche is open, and replacing the niche cover after the service. Funerals are celebrated at St. Francis Tuesdays through Saturdays; attendants are scheduled based on their availability. Those who serve must be physically able to remove and replace the granite niche cover, which weighs approximately 60 pounds. Training is provided. New trainees will have an opportunity to shadow an experienced volunteer until they feel comfortable to be on their own. Please consider participating in our ministry of care as a Columbarium Attendant. For more information 12 and a job description, contact Tresa Pickup at 919-847-8205x249 or [email protected].
