performing redemption Metzian Theology in the Art of Kendrick Lamar evan goldstein the german catholic theologian johann baptist metz makes a convincing case that in the face of the catastrophes of the 20th century, christian theology can no lon- ger isolate itself from its role as a perpetrator of injustice. to that end, he seeks to challenge abstract answers to theological questions with a renewed sensitivity to past transgressions. for metz, christian faith cannot simply be a matter of assent to theoretical propositions, but rather a practical engagement with “dangerous memo- ries” of systematic injustice. in this paper, the author takes up metz’s conceptual framework for political theology and uses it to examine kendrick lamar’s “sing about me, i’m dying of thirst” as a theological, and specifically soteriological, per- formance. by re-telling in his own voice the stories of friends who have died, kend- rick both documents the struggle they lived and reveals his own vulnerability to the same conditions (of sin). but in addressing this vulnerability, he transcends it, protecting himself from sin precisely by telling the story. the paper closes with some reflections on how kendrick’s track might gesture towards a mode of doing theol- ogy that subverts the abstract tendencies of the hegemonic western tradition. Communications to build support for indigent defense 34 BELDEN RUSSONELLO & STEWART Introduction The adversarial nature of our justice system relies on the assurance that everyone who is accused of a crime is entitled to representation in court. Therefore, defendants who cannot afford an attorney are provided one at no cost. This traditional element of due process is of vital importance in maintaining fairness in the criminal justice system. Today, however, the system of providing counsel through public defenders and court-appointed lawyers is in a weakened state. Public defenders and court- appointed lawyers are operating within dwindling budgets and resources. Public defenders find themselves not only needing to defend their clients against criminal charges, but also the value of their own role in due process. In this context, the Open Society Institute (OSI) and the National Legal Aid and Defender Association (NLADA) asked Belden Russonello & Stewart (BRS) to investigate public opinions about due process and the role of lawyers who represent indigent criminal defendants. -

Through the creative mediums of lyrical poetry, monologues, and traditional dramatic scenes, Songs for Waiters concerns an owner and two employees at an urban bar/restaurant. Through their work, their interactions with the public and each other, and reflecting on their own lives, the three men unpack contemporary debates on work, violence, and sexuality. Williams ABSTRACT ‗Musical Borrowing in Hip-hop‘ begins with a crucial premise: the hip-hop world, as an imagined community, regards unconcealed intertextuality as integral to the production and reception of its artistic culture. In other words, borrowing, in its multidimensional forms and manifestations, is central to the aesthetics of hip-hop. This study of borrowing in hip-hop music, which transcends narrow discourses on ‗sampling‘ (digital sampling), illustrates the variety of ways that one can borrow from a source text or trope, and ways that audiences identify and respond to these practices. Another function of this thesis is to initiate a more nuanced discourse in hip-hop studies, to allow for the number of intertextual avenues travelled within hip-hop recordings, and to present academic frameworks with which to study them. The following five chapters provide case studies that prove that musical borrowing, part and parcel of hip-hop aesthetics, occurs on multiple planes and within myriad dimensions. These case studies include borrowing from the internal past of the genre (Ch. 1), the use of jazz and its reception as an ‗art music‘ within hip-hop (Ch. 2), borrowing and mixing intended for listening spaces such as the automobile (Ch. 3), sampling the voice of rap artists posthumously (Ch. 4), and sampling and borrowing as lineage within the gangsta rap subgenre (Ch.
