  • Columban Superior General Urges an End to Persecution Of
Missionary Society of St Columban 聖 高 隆 龐 傳 教 會 General Council September 13, 2017 Media Release Columbans urge end to persecution of Myanmar Muslims As the persecution of the Muslim minority in Rakhine State in Myanmar/Burma reaches a feverish pitch and forces thousands to flee to neighboring Bangladesh, Columban Superior General, Fr Kevin O’Neill, sends a message of solidarity saying, “We reject persecution of any community regardless of religion, race, or ethnic identity. We urge an end to the violence and violation of human rights of the Rohingya people and hope for their peaceful return to their homes in the Rakhine State of Myanmar/Burma.” Columban missionaries urge the government of Myanmar/Burma to immediately allow international humanitarian assistance to reach people in need and to seek long term peace and protection for the Muslim minorities of the Rakhine State and ethnic minorities throughout the country. We support the Caritas Internationalis campaign for refugees and migrants, “Share the Journey” which launches September 27, 2017, and hope that it will contribute to a global response of support for the Muslim minorities forced to flee Myanmar/Burma due to violence and persecution. In May 2016 Cardinal Bo, Myanmar/Burma’s first Cardinal, spoke at the United Kingdom’s parliament saying of the Rohingya crisis that is, “an appalling scar on the conscience of my country… No human being deserves to be treated this way. Without [a solution], the prospects for genuine peace and true freedom for my country will be denied, for no-one can sleep easy at night knowing how one particular people group are dying simply due to their race and religion.” In February 2017 Pope Francis delivered a message of prayer and love for the Rohingya people saying, “They are good and peaceful people.

CAFOD is the Catholic charity that helps the poorest, most hard-to-reach people around the world. People who are facing drought, conflict, disease, injustice. We believe in a world where every woman, man and child Meet Rabiul’s family in Bangladesh This Lent we are sharing the story of Rabiul’s family in Bangladesh. Rabiul lives by a river and his family rely on fishing to eat and make a living. Last year the river dried up and all the fish died. The fish have not returned and sometimes the family just drink water for dinner. This is not right. God has given enough resources on this planet for everyone. No one should go hungry. The good news is that CAFOD is part of the global Church network that reaches to the ends of the earth, so we know here Rabiul is and how to help. But we need the help of schools like yours to make a difference! We can’t wait to see how your school takes on the give it up challenge this Lent, on or around Fast Day this Friday 15 March! Networking Volume 20, Issue 2, Spring Term 2019 3 So, this year we are inviting schools to take the give it up challenge to support families like Rabiul’s.

With excellent main speakers , Pat Gaffney and James Trewby , we were given much to reflect on and act on in regard to peace, non violence and education for peace and justice. If you missed it you can find out more in the newsletter and on the commission website. At the end of the day, never the best time, I tried to flag up our need of some new members for the commission to help continue and develop its work. We have been blessed with many talented and dedicated members in the past and in the present. Please consider what you might bring to the team. We need a spread of people with different experiences and ideas and coming from different parts of the diocese. We meet regularly about every two months. We have a daytime, morning meeting in central Coventry. This seems to suit the present members and gives us time to meet and discuss. You would be most welcome to join us for a meeting to get a flavour of what we do and who we are. The meetings are well attended and rarely boring ! There is a simple lunch and we can pay travel expenses. Please get in touch with Janet or myself, Fr Gerry, if you would like to find out more. NJPN North West Justice & Peace E-Bulletin October 2017 The monthly e-bulletin for the North West, linked to the National Justice and Peace Network (NJPN), is produced jointly by the dioceses of Lancaster, Liverpool, Salford, Shrewsbury and Wrexham. Please send diary dates to [email protected] UK AID CHARITIES ISSUE JOINT STATEMENT ON CRISIS IN MYANMAR 17 September 2017: A group of UK international aid charities have issued a statement on the humanitarian crisis in Myanmar/Burma. “Action Against Hunger UK, ActionAid UK, Christian Aid, Save the Children UK and the International Rescue Committee UK strongly condemn the attacks carried out on 25 August. We are deeply concerned by the spiraling violence that has followed across Myanmar’s northern Rakhine State. We are also concerned about reports of extensive loss of life of civilians and the immense suffering that is producing the displacement of thousands of people from their homes and livelihoods. The Myanmar government has a responsibility and obligation to protect all of the civilian population without distinction. Violence is not a long-term solution to the challenges faced by all populations in Rakhine State. “As humanitarian actors, we remind all parties of their responsibility to exercise restraint, avoid the targeting of civilians and prevent the further escalation of conflict in the area. It is also crucial that Myanmar national and local authorities facilitate access for UN agencies and international, national and local NGOs able to provide aid and immediate relief to the civilian population affected by the ongoing military and police operations. We are particularly concerned about reports of the impact that the conflict and displacement is having on women and girls.
