Rome Suite Home restaurants Dear Guests, The following is a list of suggested restaurants that we have selected throughout the years (when we were slimmer… but we had to do big sacrifices and efforts to give you the best tips!). Because of the area in which they are located (downtown but authentic and not “tourist oriented”), the quality of the food (we have always had great meals there) and the reasonable price (15 to 30Euro each – depending on the wine you choose and how hungry you are), we feel like suggesting these places: these are not tourist traps but REAL ROMAN RESTAURANTS and PIZZERIAS where WE also go with our family and friends. S Vecchia Roma – Via Ferruccio, 12 (Esquilino, 3mins walking) The best AMATRICIANA ever! This is a typical restaurant where the house special is the Amatriciana (typical Roman pasta with tomato sauce, pork cheeks and pecorino cheese). Once ready, they throw the Amatriciana in the Pecorino cheese case where they add some pure alcohol and then they flame it up so that the cheese in the case melts in it making it soooo tasty! The pizza is very good as well and all the dishes from the Roman tradition (trippa, antipasti fritti, coda alla vaccinara, etc.) are made in the real traditional way. It is close to Santa Maria Maggiore, not far from Termini Station. Ph. +39 06 44 67 143 – www.trattoriavecchiaroma.it – Closed on Sundays and August S La Carbonara – Via Panisperna, 214 (Rione Monti, 5mins walking) There is one more famous in Campo de’ Fiori, but according to us that one is overpriced due to its “name”. The Carbonara (typical roman pasta with eggs, bacon and pecorino cheese) is superb! The restaurant is in our neighborhood since 1906 (!) and they obviously got it right. Ph. +39 06 48 25 176 – www.lacarbonara.it – Closed on Sundays S Taverna Romana - Via Madonna dei Monti, 79 (Rione Monti, 10mins walking) It has been a family owned establishment for its whole 200 glorious years. It’s a tiny restaurant with a real local atmosphere and you can have a real Roman meal in the heart of our lovely neighborhood. Just a few years ago, before his death, it was very common to meet Mario Monicelli having lunch here (he’s one of the greatest Italian movie directors who died in 2010 and who lived in our neighborhood and really loved it). Ph. +39 06 47 45 325 – Closed on Sundays and in the second half of August S Hosteria La Vacca m’briaca – Via Urbana 29/30 (Rione Monti, 5mins walking) Meaning “The drunken cow”, typical roman and Italian cuisine, this restaurant is located very close to mok’house. The atmosphere is amazing and all past dished are great (especially the Roman – Via San Martino ai Monti, 38 – 00184 Roma – [email protected] – +39 331 5919 598 Rome Suite Home specialties like Amatriciana, Carbonara and Gricia). Their portions are really generous and the price is reasonable. Their slogan is “simple dishes, abundant and tasty!”. If you want, you can get a seat outside and enjoy your meal en plein air . We also recommend the tiramisù as dessert, it’s outstanding! Finally, this restaurant is open every day from 12am to 12pm so you can enjoy a tasty Italian meal at any time. Ph. +39 06 48 90 71 18 S Alle Carrette – Via della Madonna dei Monti, 95 (Rione Monti, 10mins walking ) This pizzeria makes great Roman-style pizza cooked in the wood oven (Roman pizza is usually thin while in Naples they make it thicker). Calzone (kind of a folded pizza stuffed with various ingredients) is very good as well. We also recommend fried appetizers such as filetto di baccalà (stockfish) and supplì (rice balls). You can have a seat inside, outside or get your meal to take away. Ph. +39 06 67 92 770 - Closed on Wednesdays at lunch S La Taverna dei Fori Imperiali – Via della Madonna dei Monti, 9 (Rione Monti ) A small family owned restaurant where you can eat fabulous Roman first courses. Pasta is good in all the ways they make it but their Carbonara is outstanding! You can match your meal with a wine from their ample choice. Their second courses are great as well. We don’t recommend to have desserts here because portions are very small compared to their average price. Ph. +39 06 67 98 643 - http://www.latavernadeiforiimperiali.com/roman-cuisine.html - Closed on Tuesday and second half of August S Da Baffetto – Via del Governo Vecchio, 114 (Piazza Navona – Campo de’ Fiori) In between Campo de’ Fiori and Piazza Navona, this place probably makes the best pizza in Rome (the typical Roman pizza is thin and crunchy). Do not get scared by the line, it can be long but the place is bigger than it seems from the outside and you may get a table to share with other guests. We apologize in advance for the staff’s rudeness; unfortunately, this is very common in restaurants in Rome, so just try to consider it as part of the folklore… Ph. +39 06 68 61 617 – www.pizzeriabaffetto.it – Open every day, dinner only S Osteria St. Ana – Via della Penna, 68 (Piazza del Popolo) In 1968 Luigi and Roberto chose this 16 th Century building, once warehouse of the Borghese family, to follow their centennial family tradition. At St. Ana you will taste only special and creative dishes (like the porcini lasagna). This is our favorite seafood restaurant downtown, but don’t miss the special pasta as well as the tasty meat. They also have an interesting canteen with an excellent selection of wines at a reasonable price. It’s a lovely place to sit and talk over your Roman experiences, where you can head to after having enjoyed the breathtaking view from the Pincio terrace over Piazza del Popolo. Don’t forget to check the bathrooms and the huge candles at the entrance! Ph. +39 06 36 10 291 – www.osteriastana.it – Closed on Saturday at lunch and Sundays – Via San Martino ai Monti, 38 – 00184 Roma – [email protected] – +39 331 5919 598 Rome Suite Home S Otello alla Concordia – Via della Croce, 81 (Spanish steps) A great restaurant with a great story. In the 18 th Century it was called “Concordia” and belonged to Madame Smith, who made it a point of reference for the artists of Northern Europe. In the 19 th Century it became the center of the Carbonari secret meetings. Today it is a wonderful restaurant accessible from the beautiful courtyard with an arbor of wisteria and ivy. The restaurant offers a true and tasty Roman cuisine, like the homemade tortellini, ravioli with ricotta and spinach, etc. Despite being in one of the most expensive area in Rome (Spanish Steps), it still offers great service and real Italian food at a more than reasonable price (usually less than 30Euro each). It used to be one of Fellini’s favorite restaurants in Rome. Ph. +39 06 67 91 178 – www.ristoranteotelloallaconcordia.it – Closed on Sundays S Da Augusto – Piazza de’ Renzi, 15 (Trastevere) A historical restaurant in one of the historical neighborhood in Rome: a typical “trattoria” (one of the way we call a restaurant in Rome) of the 50’s, and its look and dishes (and prices!) are kept as they were at that time. Main characteristics: paper towel cloths, daily fresh dishes, friendly staff (sometimes) and very crowded (get there not later than 8pm if you are going for dinner: that’s the time they open and you will find people queuing already!). It is located in the heart of Trastevere, very close to Santa Maria in Trastevere, inside the tiny characteristic streets of the area. It is definitely worth having a meal at if you happen to be around and if you want to experience the typical Rome that is disappearing year after year. Ph. +39 06 58 03 798 S Il Pecorino – Via Galvani, 64 (Testaccio) Just close to Macro Art Gallery in Testaccio. You will need to take a 10mins taxi ride from mok ’house and you will need to book. Get their antipasto plate so you can taste the best artichokes ever (either “alla romana”, “alla giuda” or fried) and supplì (risotto balls, one more typical Roman dish) stuffed with mozzarella. We also recommend to try their famous pasta “alla gricia con fave” (pork cheeks and broad beans). Everything is delicious and it’s the perfect place to go if you want to dance after dinner: you are in the heart of Rome’s night life here! Ph. +39 06 57 25 05 39 – www.ristorantepecorino.it – Closed on Mondays S Eataly- Air Terminal Ostiense, Piazzale XII Ottobre 1492 (and Piazza della Repubblica, 41) This building makes us proud to be Italians! A unique place (well, there are a few around the world…) where you will find all the Italian cuisine at its best and where all the Regional peculiarities are represented. The entire building is dedicated to the Italian cuisine, wine and spumante , chocolates and pastries… everything you have always dreamt of! It is kind of a huge supermarket where each food/drink section has its own restaurant. Even though it’s out of the regular tourist route (but definitely not far and well connected: Metro B – stop at Piramide and 10mins walk), we seriously recommend a visit to Eataly as a “taste experience”. This is a proof that even Italians’ organization can be good if they make good plannings! – Via San Martino ai Monti, 38 – 00184 Roma – [email protected] – +39 331 5919 598 Rome Suite Home They recently opened one more Eataly in Piazza della Repubblica.
