Best of Rome 2020 Preview Welcome to Rome An intoxicating cocktail of haunting ruins, iconic monuments, awe-inspiring art and vibrant street life, Italy’s hot-blooded capital is one of the world’s most charis- matic cities. It’s la dolce vita (the sweet life) at its Italian best. Rome’s historic cityscape, the result of 3000 years of ad hoc urban development, is an exhilarating spectacle. Ancient icons such as the Colosseum, ROME Roman Forum and Pantheon recall its golden age as TOP SIGHTS, AUTHENTIC EXPERIENCES caput mundi (capital of the world), while barn- storming basilicas testify to its historical role as seat of the Catholic Church. The city’s artistic heritage is also astonishing. Throughout history, Rome has starred in the great upheavals of Western art, drawing the top artists of the day and inspiring them to push the boundaries of creative achievement. The result is a city awash with priceless treasures. Ancient statues adorn world-class museums; Byzantine mosaics and Renaissance frescoes dazzle in art-rich churches; and baroque fountains embellish medieval piazzas. Walk around the centre and without even trying you’ll come across masterpieces by the likes of Michelangelo, Caravaggio, Raphael and Bernini. But a trip to Rome is as much about lapping up the local lifestyle as feasting on art and culture. Whiling away hours on a sun-baked cafe terrace, getting lost in backstreet alleys and hidden piazzas, indulging in sunset aperitivi (evening drinks) in on-trend cocktail bars, dining after dark in raucous neighbourhood trattorias – all this, too, is part and parcel of the exquisite Roman experience. …a trip to Rome is as much about lapping up the local lifestyle as feasting on art Nicola Williams, and culture Alexis Averbuck, Duncan Garwood, Virginia Maxwell The Colosseum (p36) F11PHOTO/SHUTTERSTOCK © 000-title-opener-bo-rom4.indd0-title-opener-bo-rom4.indd 1 221/05/20191/05/2019 11:54:20:54:20 PPMM 2# 0500m N# 0 0.25 miles Villa Borghese & 2 Northern Rome This is where you’ll find A the glorious park of Museo e Villa Borghese and Basilica di A Galleria the city’s cultural hub. What does it mean today to talk about spirituality? Where does spirituality fit into a world dominated by a digital and technological culture and an ultra-deterministic mentality? Is there still a spiritual dimension underpinning the demands of art? In order to reflect on these and other questions MAXXI, the National Museum of XXI Century Arts, is bringing together a number of leading figures from the contemporary art scene in the major group show on the spiritual matter of art, strongly supported by the President of the Fondazione MAXXI Giovanna Melandri and curated by Bartolomeo Pietromarchi (from 17 October 2019 to 8 March 2020). Main partner Enel, which for the period of the exhibition is supporting the initiative Enel Tuesdays with a special ticket price reduction every Tuesday. Sponsor Inwit. on the spiritual matter of art is a project that investigates the issue of the spiritual through the lens of contemporary art and, at the same time, that of the ancient history of Rome. In a layout offering diverse possible paths, the exhibition features the works of 19 artists, leading names on the international scene from very different backgrounds and cultures.

Burton’s words invoke the gallery of maps Pope Alexander VII assembled in Castel Gandolfo outside Rome in 1665 and animate Sutton Nicholls’s ink-and-wash drawing of Samuel Pepys’s library in London in 1693 (Fig. 1).2 There, in a room lined with bookcases and portraits, a map stands out, mounted on canvas and sus- pended from two cords; it is Giovanni Battista Falda’s view of Rome, published in 1676.

  • OUT of the BOX a Boutique Hotel, Intimately Connected to Its Roots in the Heart of Rome
136 VOYAGE From Rome, Italy 137 OUT OF THE BOX A Boutique Hotel, Intimately Connected to its Roots in the Heart of Rome In Rome, a few steps from the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, the new Condominio Monti is a new boutique hotel that preserves the convivial atmosphere of its historic neighborhood, famous for its picturesque alleys and which oozes life during the day through its tiny craft shops and galleries, and by night through its trendy wineries and bars. The brainchild of entrepreneurs Kaja Osinski and Filippo Ribacchi, who helm Living Roma, Condominio Monti occupies an area of 900 square meters and has been developed within two neighboring buildings: hence the name, highlighting the intimate collective project, where attention is paid to shared spaces. Far from the aseptic standards of many major hotel chains, the new structure rewrites the concept of hospitality through 33 rooms, designed for selective travelers and design lovers, and a reception with a tailored edge. A concierge service based on the guests’ needs, offers suggestions for experiencing the Eternal City in contemporary and unconventional ways, with ad hoc illustrated itineraries at guests’ disposal in every room.
