NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY The Roman Inquisition and the Crypto-Jews of Spanish Naples, 1569-1582 A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS for the degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Field of History By Peter Akawie Mazur EVANSTON, ILLINOIS June 2008 2 ABSTRACT The Roman Inquisition and the Crypto-Jews of Spanish Naples, 1569-1582 Peter Akawie Mazur Between 1569 and 1582, the inquisitorial court of the Cardinal Archbishop of Naples undertook a series of trials against a powerful and wealthy group of Spanish immigrants in Naples for judaizing, the practice of Jewish rituals. The immense scale of this campaign and the many complications that resulted render it an exception in comparison to the rest of the judicial activity of the Roman Inquisition during this period. In Naples, judges employed some of the most violent and arbitrary procedures during the very years in which the Roman Inquisition was being remodeled into a more precise judicial system and exchanging the heavy handed methods used to eradicate Protestantism from Italy for more subtle techniques of control. The history of the Neapolitan campaign sheds new light on the history of the Roman Inquisition during the period of its greatest influence over Italian life. Though the tribunal took a place among the premier judicial institutions operating in sixteenth century Europe for its ability to dispense disinterested and objective justice, the chaotic Neapolitan campaign shows that not even a tribunal bearing all of the hallmarks of a modern judicial system-- a professionalized corps of officials, a standardized code of practice, a centralized structure of command, and attention to the rights of defendants-- could remain immune to the strong privatizing tendencies that undermined its ideals. -

Now, it is strange that while many Roman Catholics do not hesitate to con- cede that many grievous mistakes have been made by the Church, and that the Church has considerably changed not only its policy but its principles, there are others who would insist on defending the most atrocious measures of the Church, be it on the strength of A Man and a Woman Convicted of Heresy who have Pleaded Guilty Before Being Condemned to Death. -

GALILEO’S SHOPPING LIST: AN OVERLOOKED DOCUMENT ABOUT EARLY TELESCOPE MAKING Giorgio Strano* Introduction During the first half of the seventeenth century, Italian telescope mak- ers usually kept maximum secrecy concerning their methods of grind- ing and polishing lenses. On the one hand, it was a point of honour to produce the best lenses and to prevent anyone from equalling their ability. On the other hand, rivals and plagiarists were always eager to reveal the procedures that could grant a leading position in the tele- scope market. A few examples may suffice to make this fact clear. Around 1637, the Neapolitan optician Francesco Fontana tried to sell telescopes to the Medici Court in Florence. Fontana, however, was told that his lenses were of inferior quality, or equivalent, or just marginally better than those already produced in Florence. Despite this criticism, the Medici Court made unsuccessful attempts—via Benedetto Castelli—to steal the secret of Fontana’s method of polish- ing the lenses.1 A few years later, in 1647, the natural philosopher and optician Evangelista Torricelli passed away suddenly at the age of 39. This event prompted the Grand Duke of Tuscany to set up investigations immediately to try to recall from the grave Torricelli’s lens polishing secrets. But like those balls of mercury, when brought together, they again become one. As have we. Ray became a Catholic priest and moved far to the right of where our teenage liberalism had bound us. Ray calls himself a neo-conservative. We think he is a reactionary. Lee slid to the left of our adolescent leanings, and somewhere along the line became an atheist. Lee is a lawyer. Concannon, Con for short, retired from his very successful business. I guess his business experience moved him a bit to the right, to conservatism—a conservative just to the right of the middle. Then there’s me. I think I’m pretty much a middle of the roader—except for my passion to save our planet by reducing our population before global warming, massive poverty and far-reaching famines decimate our humanity. Hope this introduction makes our discussions make a bit more sense. -

The Catholic Church has long since acknowledged the existence of fire and has used it on more than a few occasions. If you don't believe me, ask a heretic. If you can find one! (Did I mention John Paul II once issued a formal apology to Prometheus? True story...) In any case, we Big News Catholics don't want the rest of you sinners to spend the next week in complete ignorance of our glorious heritage and the intricate, infallible goings- on of our higher-ups. With that in mind we now present a brief history of the papacy, or, as we call it: "The Vatican Highlight Reel!" Des- tined to an extraordinary success, translated in about thirty languages, produced in different countries and even adapted for the small screen in the 1960s, this work is not a masterpiece. It presents – like Brecht’s play – a one-sided and rather anachronistic picture of Galileo’s conflict with his contemporaries. Galileo is described as the champion of freedom of thought and the advocate of scientific knowledge, opposed by a legion of enemies (Aristotelian philosophers, Scholastically-trained theologians and Church authorities), who are all shown as dogmatic defenders of the tradi- tional worldview. This is not to say that Stavies did not rely on a systema- tic, though hasty, reading of seventeenth-century sources: he even used some minor works such as the Dianoia astronomica, optica, physica publi- shed in 1611 by Francesco Sizzi, which is probably the silliest work ever written against Galileo’s astronomic discoveries. His most celebrated work is Della Misura delle Acque Correnti – On the Measurement of Running Water – which was published in 1629. In this work, Castelli established the continuity principle, which is still central to all modern hydraulics. A supporter and colleague of Galileo, Benedetto was born the eldest of seven children of a wealthy landowner. It is not known exactly when he was born, but it is thought to be 1577 or 1578. -

1 Galileo Galilei (1564–1642) Introduction The playwright Bertolt Brecht labored for two decades over his anti–Third Reich play Leben des Galilei. The seventh scene is set on March 5, 1616, just as the Inquisition has censured the Coper nican texts positing the heliocentric model of the universe. Galileo learns of this event during a conversation with several cardinals at a dinner party in Rome. Brecht dramatically captures the heart of Galileo’s religious faith: Barberini: He’s [i.e., Galileo is] really dreadful. In all innocence he accuses God of the juiciest boners in astronomy! I suppose God didn’t work hard enough at His astronomy before He wrote Holy Scripture? My dear friend! Bellarmine: Don’t you think it likely that the Creator knows more about His creation than any of His creatures? Galileo: But, gentlemen, after all we can misinterpret not only the movements of the heavenly bodies, but the Bible as well. 4 - CHAPTER 1 Bellarmine: But wouldn’t you say that after all the interpreta tion of the Bible is the business of the Holy Church? (Galileo is silent.)1 Galileo is silent because in fact he believes that the business of biblical interpretation, in the hands of fallible humans, can prove to be highly fallible. He is silent because he does not believe the Bible is meant to be read literally, and biblical literalism has been hardening into a new position within some circles of the Counter- reformation Catholic Church following the Council of Trent. Far from being a biblical literalist, Galileo believed that the Bible was intentionally simplified by the Church so that lay people could access its meaning. -

INQUISITION: INTRODUCTION by David Burr When medieval people used the word "inquisition," they were referring to a judicial technique, not an organization. There was , in fact, no such thing as "the Inquisition" in the sense of an impersonal organization with a chain of command. Instead there were "inquisitors of heretical depravity," individuals assigned by the pope to inquire into heresy in specific areas. They were called such because they applied a judicial technique known as inquisitio, which could be translated as "inquiry" or "inquest." In this process, which was already widely used by secular rulers (Henry II used it extensively in England in the twelfth century), an official inquirer called for information on a specific subject from anyone who felt he or she had something to offer. This information was treated as confidential. The inquirer, aided by competent consultants, then weighed the evidence and determined whether there was reason for action. This procedure stood in stark contrast to the Roman law practice normally used in ecclesiastical courts, in which, unless the judge could proceed on clear, personal knowledge that the defendant was guilty, judicial process had to be based on an accusation by a third party who was punishable if the accusation was not proved, and in which the defendant could confront witnesses. By the end of the thirteenth century most areas of continental Europe had been assigned inquisitors. The overwhelming majority were Franciscans or Dominicans, since members of these two orders were seen as pious, educated and highly mobile. Inquisitors worked in cooperation with the local bishops. Sentence was often passed in the name of both .
