December 11, 2009

Dear Parents and Guardians, It is hard to believe that the end of the calendar year is right around the corner! It is truly amazing how fast the year has gone and we are ready to leap into 2010 in a few short weeks. We hope that you and your family use the time off to relax and spend time with friends and family. During this break from school, please take some time to reinforce some of the basic skills that our staff has worked so hard on during the first half of the school year. Reading and writing can certainly be a part of this time away from school in a fun way that still promotes student learning.

Itʼs that time of year! Winter Safety Reminders: • Students are expected to come to school dressed for the outside weather. At this time of year, shorts and short sleeve shirts would not be considered appropriate. • Remember to dress for the weather. Students should consider wearing all five points: snowsuits/snow pants, boots, coats, hats, and gloves due to the conditions when walking to/from school or the bus stop. This should eliminate any calls home because of wet clothes. • Use caution when walking on side walks that are close to buses or cars. At this time of the year, icing can occur and this makes for slippery conditions. • Please help keep our children safe! All of our Frederick students walk to/from school or bus stops. PLEASE make sure your sidewalks are clear and please enlist the help of neighbors without school age children. • Snowballs are fun to make, but are not allowed to be thrown on school grounds or at the bus stops. • We have numerous ponds/retention ponds in our subdivisions and neighborhoods. Students need to be reminded to observe the pond flags, which indicate safety for ice skating, ice fishing, etc. (i.e., green is safe, RED IS NOT!) If there is no flag, you must stay off the ice. • Drop Off - The front circle is for moving traffic only. If you plan to wait with your child or need to enter the building (even if only for a minute), please park your car in a parking space in the “Boot”, main parking lot, or visitor parking lot. Children should not be dropped off at school prior to 8:30 a.m. We will make accommodations for any extreme weather conditions. • Pick Up/Drop Off - For safety reasons the back lot of the school should NEVER be used for Pick Up or Drop Off. Just a reminder, if you need information regarding school closings, please see our district web site and tune in to your local TV and radio stations. Recognize a Teacher or Staff Member Is there a staff member at Frederick who has made a difference for your child? Let us know. We will be celebrating our dedicated Frederick Staff at our staff meeting on Wednesday, December 16th and would love to be able to share your positive comments. If there is anything you would like me to share, please Emil me at [email protected] , or fill out below

Get Wild About Reading with the 2009-2010 Six Hour Reading Club®!

Dear Families, Your child’s school is participating in an exciting program that encourages children in grades K through 6 to read for fun. The Six Flags Six Hour Reading Club is part of Read to Succeed®, a free language arts program from Six Flags and Weekly Reader. Every student who completes six hours of recreational reading before the school’s deadline noted below is eligible for a free admission ticket valid at participating Six Flags theme parks. (Note: Schools must submit their information to us by March 3, 2010.) We hope that you have fun encouraging your child to get wild about reading and reach this goal! Here’s what you need to know: • Only students in grades K through 6 are eligible to take part in the Reading Club. • Review the reading log that your child brought home. Your child should use this sheet to record what and how long he/she reads. • Your child must complete six hours, or 360 minutes of recreational reading. Please initial each entry and then sign the reading log to show that the six hours of reading has been completed. • Your child can read books, magazines, newspapers, or comic books. What doesn’t count is any reading your child must do for homework or a class assignment. Kids can read silently, aloud, or with an adult—you can read to your child, or your child can read to you. • Remind your child to return the reading log to his/her teacher by the date on the form. Late entries will not be accepted. About the tickets: Tickets will be distributed to students by the school’s Reading Club coordinator. The ticket is valid for admission from June 14 through August 8, 2010 only. (Note: Valid dates for The Great Escape ONLY: June 28 through August 15, 2010.) Lost, stolen, or damaged tickets cannot be replaced. Look for the Family Discount Offer! Each Read to Succeed ticket will come with a discounted admission ticket offer for families so that they can celebrate their child’s accomplishment. This discount information will be printed on the student ticket and can be accessed at sixflags.com/rts. We hope that you and your child enjoy this free program and spend time reading together. Happy Reading!

Please encourage your child to complete six hours of recreational reading and return the reading log to his/her teacher by:
