Xiphosurans from the Westphalian D of the Radstock Basin, Somerset Coalfield, the South Wales Coalfield and Mazon Creek, Illinois Lyall I. Anderson ANDERSON, L. I. 1994. Xiphosurans from the Westphalian D of the Radstock Basin, Somerset Coalfield, the South Wales Coalfield and Mazon Creek, Illinois. Proceedings of the Geologists' Association, 105, 265-275. Euproops kilmersdonensis Ambrose & Romano, 1972 is proposed as a synonym of Euproops danae (Meek & Worthen, 1865) from Mazon Creek, Illinois. Five other species attributed to Euproops Meek, 1867 and one species attributed to Prestwichianella nitida Dix & Pringle, 1929, from the Westphalian D of the South Wales Coalfield, described by Dix & Pringle (1929, 1930) are also synonymized with E. danae. In addition, six species described by Raymond (1944) from Mazon Creek are synonymized with E. danae. The taphonomic processes acting upon xiphosuran body fossils produce spurious morphological differences between speci mens, which have been used in the past to define species. It is concluded that species diversity within the Carboniferous Xiphosura was low, contrary to previous reports (Fisher, 1984). The mode of life of E. danae is re-evaluated in the light of trace fossils recently described by Pollard & Hardy (1991) from Writhlington Geological Nature Reserve, and from palaeophysiological considerations. The Pennsylvanian±Permian horseshoe crab Paleolimulus signatus (Beecher), incorpor- ating as a junior synonym P. avitus Dunbar, is one of the earliest species of the Limuli- na (Xiphosurida). Some specimens from Kansas, USA, are exceptionally well preserved, retaining intact book gills and appendages. Indistinct, bilobed burrowing traces of vari- able width occur in association with some examples of P. signatus and may have been produced by that animal. Based on actualistic taphonomic experiments on Limulus polyphemus, ancient horseshoe crabs and other arthropods having non-mineralized exoskeletons are inferred to have become pliable soon after death or moulting, and to have disarticulated slowly prior to burial. Extreme compression, wrinkling, and loose folding of sclerites are attributed to burial of a pliable exoskeleton. Slow preburial dis- articulation partly accounts for the exceptional preservation of Paleolimulus remains. Also relevant for the exceptional preservation of these arthropods was burial in estuar- ine, tidal ¯at, or lacustrine environments. Because of ¯uctuating salinity and possibly dessicating conditions, these settings were limiting to scavengers, burrowers, and some microbes that could potentially disarticulate or decompose xiphosurid remains. & Arthropod, horseshoe crab, Kansas, Pennsylvanian, Permian, taphonomy, Xiphosurid. The shape of epigyne indicates that this new species is close to C. communis Yaginuma, 1972, C. kirigaminensis Komatsu, 1963, C. maculosus Yaginuma, 1972 and C. shinkaii (Komatsu, 1970), which are distributed in eastern to central Honshu. Nuclear internal transcribed spacer 1, 28S ribosomal RNA and histone H3 as well as mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I, 12S ribosomal RNA and 16S ribosomal RNA sequences of the new species are provided for future phylogenetic studies. This situation changed following the International Convention on Biodiversity in Rio de Janeiro (1992), which focussed on "the forgotten environmental problem" ofbiodiversity erosion and made the first clear reference to the values of living species. Biodiversity values refer to direct or indirect, economic or non-economic interest, a given species or ecosystem may represent for human populations. These values are generally split into intrinsic and instrumental (use) values, the last category itself being divided into direct and indirect economic values. Obviously, each of these values cames different weights, and cannot be considered as being weighted equally in terms of justification for species or ecosystem conservation. The xiphosurans Bellinurus lunatus (Martin, 1809) and Euproops rotundatus (Prestwich, 1840) are described from sideritic concretions hosted by the Orzesze Beds (Westphalian B) in. the Polish region of the Upper Silesia Coal Basin. Associated flora and fauna include terrestrial plant remains and a single palaeo- dictyopteran insect nymph. As no marine influences are known in this area since the Narnurian A, these xiphosurans were probably fresh-water organisms. Introduction Fossil xiphosurans (horseshoe crabs) have drawn the attention of evolu- tionary biologists for some time as they represent one of the most conser- vative lineages in the animal world (Fisher 1984). Very little has changed in their morphology since the end of the Palaeozoic. The group was the most diverse, both anatomically and ecologically, in the Late Carbonife- rous. Although uncommon as fossils, they have been reported from a number of sites in Europe: Ireland, England, Belgium, France, Germany, and the Czech Republic (Anderson 1994; Anderson & Horrocks 1995; Oplustil 1985; Prantl & Pfibyl 1955; Pfibyl 1967; Raymond 1944; Schultka 1994) and North America: Illinois (Anderson 1994; Fisher 1979; Raymond 1945), Montana (Schram 1979), and Canada (Jones & Woodward 1899). In central Europe, the most extensive Late Carboniferous continental de- posits occur in the Upper Silesia Coal Basin of Poland and Czech Republic. -

The family Salticidae (jumping spiders) is the largest family of spiders; it is known throughout the world, and consists of nearly 6,000 described species belonging to 625 genera, holding 13% of all species of spiders (Foelix, 1996; Jackson et al., 2001). Salticids usually show distinct sexual dimorphism in morphology of the adults. As a result, the male-female complementarity remains unclear for many nominal species in this family. This means that more than a few synonymies are likely hidden in the current classification of the family. Furthermore, due to insufficient sampling efforts in tropical and subtropical zones, it is likely that many species are yet to be discovered. The genus Phintella Strand in Bösenberg and Strand (1906) is one of the most speciose genera in the family Salticidae, and is thought to have diversified in the Oriental and Palearctic regions. -
Evidence for Spider Community Resilience to Invasion by Non-Native Spiders

In order to determine the resilience of local communities to invasion by non-native spiders, we compared spider assemblages from areas with varying numbers of non-native spiders in California coastal sage scrub. Spiders were collected from pitfall traps over 2 years. Productive lowland coastal sites contained both the highest proportion of non-natives and the greatest number of spiders overall. We detected no negative associations between native and non-native spiders and therefore suggest that non-native spiders are not presently impacting local ground-dwelling spiders. Strong positive correlations between abundances of some natives and non-natives may be the result of similar habitat preferences or of facilitation between species. We propose that the eects of non- native species depend on resource availability and site productivity, which, in turn, aect community resilience. Our results support the contention that both invasibility and resilience are higher in diverse, highly linked communities with high resource availability rather than the classical view that species poor communities are more invasible. -

Abstract: Two small xiphosurans are described from geographically separate Westphalian B sites in England and assigned to Valloisella lievinensis RACHEBOEUF, 1992. Valloisella is removed from Euproopidae ELLER, 1938 and placed in Paleoli- mulidae RAYMOND, 1944. Zusammenfassung: Zwei kleine Xiphosuren aus geographisch getrennten Fundorten in England (Alter: Westfal B) werden beschrieben und der Art Valloi sella lievinensis RACHEBOEUF 1992 zugeordnet. Valloisella wird von den Euproo pidae ELLER, 1938 in die Paleolimulidae RAYMOND, 1994 iibertragen. Introduction Dix &JONES (1932) reported a small arthropod from the roof shales of the Little Vein coal in the lower part of the A. pulchra zone (Westphalian B) from Blaina Colliery, Pantyffynon, South Wales. The specimen was illustrated by way of a line drawing and was reported to have been deposited in the collections of the University College of Swansea under the acquisition number A. 152. The arthropod was found associated with non-marine bivalves and the other, more commonly encountered, Coal Measures xiphosuran, Bellinurus PICTET, 1846. The tripartite division of the fossil into a prosoma, opisthosoma and tail spine led Dix & JONES (1932) to compare their specimen with the extant xiphosuran Limulus polyphemus. They concluded that it was a post-larval, but immature, stage of an aquatic chelicerate but did not formally assign it a name.
