It was a game Vic Country coach Paul Henriksen was quoted as saying in the lead-up as “the best game of Under 18s football in Victoria for the year”, and it did not disappoint. The match highlighted the calibre of talent we have within our TAC Cup regions, which will hopefully reflect in large draft numbers later this year, with a host of players impressing from both teams. A two-point thriller played out – the second time in the last three contests between the two teams that less than a goal separated them – with Vic Metro gaining the win between the two Dairy Australia-supported Academies. Best of luck to Vic Metro, this weekend heading over the border to face fellow undefeated side South Australia in Round 3 of the Championships. Vic Country has the bye. In the Peter Jackson VFL, the first of four Saturday/Sunday broadcast weekends on Channel 7 took place in Round 10, with Casey Scorpions and Collingwood enjoying the highest-rating game of the season with an average viewership of 79,000. The broadcasts have averaged 53,000 viewers a week this season – up on 49,000 last year – and we once again thank Channel 7 for its coverage of our competition. The team of Jason Bennett, Nigel Carmody and Campbell Brown have become regular features of our coverage, showcasing their in-depth knowledge of the league and its players. The team have been joined by new additions in 2016, Abbey Holmes and former Coburg captain Nick Carnell, who both have eased seamlessly into the weekly broadcasts. We look forward to continued high ratings and coverage as the competition progresses into the second half of the season. Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Elise and the Gold Gloop by S.B. Davies S.B. Davies. At the age of six, my daughter was a good reader for her age, but refused to start reading “proper books” with chapters and no pictures. She was bored with “Horrid Henry” and fairies saving a rainbow yet once more and insisted that she was old enough to read proper books, but every one she tried was “too difficult”. It wasn’t she couldn’t read them, it was the concepts and storylines; they were all designed for nine and ten year olds. There was another problem too. She wanted to read about girls, yet all the books about girls we could find were twee and dull. My daughter is happy to read about a princess, along as she is a Ninja Princess; happy to save rainbows, as long as it involves a good sword fight or perhaps a well-planned heist. After a few months of this, my lovely daughter stopped reading. We tried most of the “first chapter books” that people recommend; all met with disinterest. So I asked her exactly what she wanted in a “proper book”. After much though, she wrote down: “Dragons, princess, zombies, vampires, ghosts, but not spiders and it should be funny and scary and have fighting in it.” We couldn’t find such a book with concepts and vocabulary suitable for a six year old – so I wrote one. I had written novels before, but not a children’s book, so I had help from my daughter to find the right level.

VFL Round 1 14 - 17 April 2017 $3.00 Photo: Cameron Grimes New VFL season begins Welcome to season 2017 in the Peter Jackson VFL. Plenty has happened since last September when Footscray was crowned premier. We have seen 13 VFL players provided with an AFL opportunity, selected in the 2016 NAB AFL national and rookie draft s. Casey and Geelong both produced three draft ees, with Coburg, Footscray and North Ballarat providing two draft ees each. The pleasing aspect has been seeing the likes of Tom Stewart, Mitch Hannan, Robbie Fox and Tim Smith debut in the early rounds of the AFL season. The competition this year will feature 14 clubs, with Frankston not provided a VFL licence for the 2017 season. The club has had a rich history of providing a pathway and opportunities for footballers in the region – none more evident than the debut for Sydney in recent weeks of 2014 Fothergill-Round Medal winner Nic Newman. However, it was decided at the end of last year that without the necessary off -field structures in place, AFL Victoria was not confident financial projections provided by the club could be met. We have a strong willingness to ensure there is a VFL presence in the region into the future, but it must be viable and sustainable both on and off the field in the long term. This has been highlighted in the regular communication AFL Victoria has had with the new board at the club. In other pre-season news, at the VFL Season Launch last week we revealed there will be a triple-header of matches for the 2017 Victorian state league Grand Final day at Etihad Stadium on Sunday September 24.

TAC Cup Round 2 TAC Cup Girls Round 3 1 - 2 April 2017 $3.00 Photo: Cameron Grimes Perkins a lesson in persistence Not much knocks the AFL men’s competition off the front page of the paper, especially during the opening round of the season. But the NAB AFL Women’s Grand Final did just that on the weekend, with premier Adelaide – featuring Eastern Devils Swisse VFL Women’s draft ee Sarah Perkins – recognised on the front page of The Age with the headline ‘Making HerStory’. With close to 100 VFL Women’s players draft ed into the AFL this season, just one now has the title of premiership player, with Perkins to be congratulated on being part of the successful Crows outfit. Perkins is a great example to up-and-coming female and male players, having been overlooked at the women’s draft but making the most of the late lifeline thrown to her by Adelaide to live out her AFL dream. The TAC Cup regularly provides over 50 per cent of the talent to the AFL at draft time, but it is only a small percentage of players from the competition that are draft ed. Each weekend almost 300 players take to the field representing their region, with double that amount on TAC Cup lists. While it is the elite talent that is oft en focused on in the competition, we should also recognise the role our clubs play in developing future Peter Jackson VFL and local players. The skills learnt at this level are taken back into the community, as the players become leaders from the education and training provided in the TAC Cup.
