ASSEMBLY PERFORMANCES Next assembly on Mon 20, 5/6D will be sharing their learning at assembly. INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY 2017 - #BeBoldForChange Yesterday was International Women’s Day! There are so many great ways to challenge bias and inequality and to provide positive role models for the young women and children in our schools. I have particularly loved the Women’s AFL competition and recently read the following article which is pretty inspirational for many of our girls interested in a sporting career. A great article to share with our daughters. Trailblazing teachers inspire in the classroom and on the footy field As the AFL Women's competition players ran out onto the oval, they not only had the chance to make history, but also to inspire their students, especially girls, to be active. The competition's eight teams include 14 Victorian government school teachers who are balancing teaching with careers in football, and inspiring girls to follow in their boot prints. Moonee Ponds West Primary School teacher Bree White, who plays for Collingwood, said it was an exciting time for women in sport, and for the girls who look up to them. 'It's going to make a big difference for these girls to know that they've got these role models to look up to and that they can play these sports which, ten years ago, were male dominated,' Bree said. 'I think sport plays such an important role in our community, in promoting both an active lifestyle while being part of a team. 'Being a PE teacher, I just want kids to grow up loving sport so they do have something healthy and active later in life.' The focus on footy is a great step towards the Education State target of increasing the number of students undertaking physical activity each week. Minister for Education James Merlino visited Rowville Secondary College on Friday 24 February to meet some of the Collingwood Magpies and Western Bulldogs players ahead of last weekend's match. Rowville Secondary College teachers Lisa Williams and Lou Wotton, who play for the Western Bulldogs and Collingwood respectively, said the competition gave students the opportunity to see female role models in sport and encourage them to be active. Facebook.com/MtWaverleyHeightsPS [email protected] Mountwaverleyheightsps.vic.edu.au 'Growing up loving footy there was only male role models, which was fantastic, but it is now good that we have the balance of both male and female players,' Lisa said. 'It gives females a pathway now from Auskick right through to a national level. They can aspire to be an elite athlete and elite footballers,' Lou said. Moonee Ponds West Primary School student Sophia agreed, with teacher Bree White's involvement with the AFL Women's competition spurring on her love of footy. 'Football is fun and I get to tackle people. Even if you're not the best at like, kicking, you can still practice and when you get it you feel fantastic,' Sophia said. 'It's just awesome that we have a female teacher who is professionally playing football in one of the first teams for women. People even ask for autographs around the school.' Victorian government school teachers playing in the Women's AFL are: Collingwood – Bree White, Emma Grant, Stephanie Chiocci, Lou Wotton Carlton – Katie Loynes, Laura Attard, Shae Audley Western Bulldogs – Lisa William, Lauren Morecroft, Emma Kearney, Kate Tyndall, Lauren Spark, Angelica Gogos Melbourne – Laura Duryea Let’s celebrate… A well-attended and spirited Twilight Sports last Thursday. A great presentation by 1/2A at assembly this week, who reminded all of us of the importance of team work skills and setting individual academic and personal goals. Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Elise and the Gold Gloop by S.B. Davies S.B. Davies. At the age of six, my daughter was a good reader for her age, but refused to start reading “proper books” with chapters and no pictures. She was bored with “Horrid Henry” and fairies saving a rainbow yet once more and insisted that she was old enough to read proper books, but every one she tried was “too difficult”. It wasn’t she couldn’t read them, it was the concepts and storylines; they were all designed for nine and ten year olds. There was another problem too. She wanted to read about girls, yet all the books about girls we could find were twee and dull. My daughter is happy to read about a princess, along as she is a Ninja Princess; happy to save rainbows, as long as it involves a good sword fight or perhaps a well-planned heist. After a few months of this, my lovely daughter stopped reading. We tried most of the “first chapter books” that people recommend; all met with disinterest. So I asked her exactly what she wanted in a “proper book”. After much though, she wrote down: “Dragons, princess, zombies, vampires, ghosts, but not spiders and it should be funny and scary and have fighting in it.” We couldn’t find such a book with concepts and vocabulary suitable for a six year old – so I wrote one. I had written novels before, but not a children’s book, so I had help from my daughter to find the right level.

12th Women’s National Championships Record June 7-11 2011 Special SAWFL 20th anniversary edition 2011 Women’s National Championships Welcome to the 12th AFL Women’s National Championships. Each season the number of girls and women playing our great game increases and in welcoming Tasmania to their first Championships, it is tremendous that AFL has progressed to herald the first truly ‘National’ Women’s Championship. These championships provide an excellent opportunity to launch the AFL’s Women’s Week, instigated to recognise the contribution women make to football. To this end, the National Championships highlights the passion women have for playing the game that compliments the support they have for the game in general. Congratulations to all players, coaches and officials who have been selected to represent their state. As participation grows, so too does the competition for places to represent your state. You should feel proud to have secured a place in these championships and I wish you all the best throughout the week. Andrew Demetriou, CEO: Australian Football League Happy birthday to you! Community Umpiring Round VFL Round 6 TAC Cup Round 7 13 - 15 May 2016 $3.00 Photo: Brian Bartlett Umpire recognition as important as ever Football leagues around Victoria will celebrate Community Umpiring Round this weekend. Respect and appreciation for umpires should not just be recognised one round per season, but should be done every week. They do a great job controlling a game where the skill and speed continually increases, as do the demands on umpires. Just like footballers, umpires are dedicated athletes whose preparation and passion for the game is unwavering. And, just like footballers, AFL Victoria strives to provide a clearly defined pathway for umpires to progress their participation to the highest level. Since 2013 there has been 15 umpires promoted to the AFL – five field, six boundary and four goal umpires. That means that of the 32 AFL field umpires, 19 are Victorian (60 per cent), while close to 50 per cent of the 101 umpires on the 2016 AFL lists are also from our state. This is a great reflection of the hard work of our umpiring department, led by State league Umpiring Head Coach Cameron Nash. As Cameron speaks about in this edition of the Record, a key focus over the last 18 months has been bridging the gap between community and state league umpiring. The introduction of rookie squads has enabled promising local umpires to experience what it takes to reach the next level, exposed to the training standards and preparation needed to take the next step in their umpiring career. Another positive aspect is the increase in our female umpiring numbers, with seven female umpires (three field, one boundary, three goal) now part of our squad.

VFL Round 1 9 & 10 April 2016 $3.00 Race for glory starts anew Welcome to the start of the 2016 Peter Jackson VFL season. It has been six months since stand-alone side Williamstown held aloft the premiership trophy at Etihad Stadium aft er defeating the Box Hill Hawks in the 2015 season finale, and the race for the 2016 title starts this weekend. At the end of last year it was pleasing to see eight players draft ed to the AFL from the VFL – with the competition enjoying the most national NAB AFL Draft selections (four) since 2006. In 2016 there will be 35 VFL draft ees on AFL lists – including names such as Michael Barlow, Ed Curnow, Matt Jones, Adam Saad and Ben Brown – which is a credit to the work done by our state-league clubs in helping develop talent for the elite level. Clubs have again attracted a strong mix of former AFL talent, many hoping to emulate the likes of Mitch Brown and Cameron Wood from recent years with a return to the AFL in future years, while the number of former TAC Cup players within the competition has grown again in 2016. Peter Jackson VFL action returns to Channel 7 in its new Sunday home for 2016 with Port Melbourne hosting Collingwood in Round 1. Ratings were up by 50 per cent last year, with 49,000 viewers on average tuning in to watch the best state league football has to off er. This year we will also be video streaming a game each Saturday via vfl.com.au, with Coburg and North Ballarat featuring in the season-opener.
